The first week of play for the Battlefield District is behind us. There weren’t any surprises as far as I was concerned. There are a couple things that made me take note though. I’ll touch on that below. The second week should show us a little more of what we should expect to see the rest of the season. An old wise man once told me that the biggest single improvement in a football season comes between game one and two. I never put any math to that theory but it makes a little sense. Let’s set this week up and see what shakes out.

Caroline @ Patrick Henry Ash

I stand by my words in saying there is talent in Caroline. They just have to put it all together and make things happen. I believe in you Cavs! Keep working hard. This week they face Patrick Henry Ashland and that’s another tough out. The positive note here is the Cavs are learning and will give the Patriots a tough night. If Patrick Henry stumbles, Caroline will be ready to pounce. I don’t see that as the final outcome though. Patrick Henry Ash takes the W.

Chancellor vs Massaponax

I have picked apart the video and may need to take a small step back. Chancellor played a little sloppy against Riverbend but was hampered more by missed opportunity than anything. They are already working on that. In the worlds of being physical and defense … Chancellor is there. I have to be honest. I’ve seen some Massaponax/Courtland video and had to take a double look. Didn’t look like the Panthers or the Cougars of last year. Maybe just first game jitters? Kind of what I saw in Chancellor and Riverbend? I don’t know. I will be watching for improvements this week though. Chancellor will be there in full force. So will Massaponax. The Panthers haven’t lost a regular season game in three years. Chancellor has the talent and game plan to break that streak. The question is whether or not they can step it up and do a better job of taking advantage of their opportunities. The Panthers will give them many! So I’ll just call it the way I see it and say it’s going to take another week. Massaponax with the W.

Prove me wrong Chargers!

Courtland vs Riverbend

This is going to be a very good football game. I don’t think either of these teams are what they were last year. Like I said above, I had to take a second look at the video. The Cougars are going to have to step up their game to stop two bruising backs that the Bears will send toward them 50 or 60 times! Trust me, those backs are tough. Riverbend has a chip on their shoulders. They are not willing to go down to two 4A schools to start their year twice in a row. They will bring their all! When it’s over, I see the Bears with the W. They’ll bring too much for the Cougars to handle with this year’s squad.

King George @ Essex

There is one question that I can’t answer with this one. I just don’t have the information. What does Essex have back from last year’s deep playoff run? They lost this past week to a good Goochland team. King George beat up on Washington & Lee in a game that had blowout written all over it before the first kick off. I put little value in that game. But, I do believe the Foxes are a better squad this year and that will tip the balance. King George will get the W.

James Monroe @ York

James Monroe played a tough one this past week. My concern is they couldn’t manage to make the big plays happen or put more than 10 points on the board. Not like the Jackets I am used to seeing. York is a very good team and they are looking for opportunity. They played the Jackets a very tough one last year. I absolutely love to see the Jackets roll, but I am going to have to put stock in the Falcons. I think they have what it takes. York with the W.

Spotsylvania @ Fluvanna

Last year Fluvanna fell in a close one to the Knights. I don’t think it will be as close this time around. Spotsy is still coming together under a new regime. They need to keep putting out 100% and get their fellow classmates out of the hallways and on to the practice fields. It won’t take long and the “New” Spotsy will provide visions of the “Old!” Make it happen Knights! I’d like to see it different but the Flucos get the W.

Week two is set. That’s right, this is week 2 of 11 already! Make sure you get out early and often to watch the young men of the Battlefield District teams play. Their effort is worth every minute of your time and the six bucks to get through the gate. Worth every penny.

Good luck to the players and the coaching staffs this week! It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to watch you!
