Though the return of Coach Fischer propelled the Lions into the playoffs the last two years, they were unfortunately one and done both years.

With a roster of 51 last year, and losing 20 to graduation, you have to wonder how strongly they are going to get out of the starting gate this year.

I understand that going to a game at Louisa is a rather unique experience. What with the way the players enter the stadium, a parade on the track, and of course the fireworks, it is certainly an extravaganza.

It's time that the Lions show the same fireworks on the field that everyone enjoys in the skies above. Will that happen this year? Will they win an extra game or two during the regular season, and therefore get a better seeding in the playoffs?

Not in my opinion. I see 3-7 or 4-6 this year. Maybe 5-5. But no playoffs.

This year's schedule was not available, so once again I simply posted last year's schedule with results.

Look it over and tell us what you think.

Their first 5 are Sherando, Courtland, King George, Western Alb., Charlottesville. You'll have a pretty good indication how it's gonna go from those.

I think Louisa will be better this year, especially since Fischer has had a year to get the boys back on track. I will go with 6-4.

I'm guessing their roster of 51 is Varsity only? When you see Salem with a roster of around 90, realize that's JV & Varsity. Some 5/6A have 120+ between Fr/JV/Vars

Rosters are funny things. Everyone does it differently.

Louisa will have some where around 50 on the sideline that might actually play. Fischer is a good Coach. The players love this guy. The program is good. But they don't play too many weenies. 6 - 4 is a good year. A good team.

Under different circumstances, this team might be viewed as dominant coming into the playoffs. But those are not the circumstances.

They have same schedule as last year so the first four games are Sherando, Courtland, King George, Albemarle. I agree with your second sentence though, we'll have a good indication after those games of who they are.

The took us to the woodshed in the season finale. By far the worst effort we had in any game and the result showed.

They lose a lot of lineman but bring back the best one they had, Quinton Ragland. He's all of 6'4 270 and was a force. I'd say he's the best returning lineman in the Cville area bar none, probably one of the best returning lineman in all of 4A. The also bring back the entire starting backfield of QB Cherry, RBs Whalen and Bell and FB Shelton. Their JV won the Jefferson and only lost to Orange and Courtland and maybe Sherando? They had some pretty big boys in the trenches. I know they scrimmaged LC Bird last year so as you said, we'll know a lot about them early between that matchup and a stiff non district trio. I wouldn't/won't be taking them lightly.

It's no easy schedule. Sherando has some good players but Louisa is going to lead that single Wing offense with their 6'4' 280 lb lead blocker and a couple of damn good running backs. It will be very difficult to stop them from getting 4 and 5 yards at a pop. Plus, Louisa is very hard to beat at home. Especially opening night. Courtland loses their 4 stud skill players. They will still be strong but vulnerable. Lions should be the equal of KG. WA has been good since Coach Redmon arrived. A challenging squad. The Black Knights have not been good since beyond recollection. Great expectations that are never fulfilled.

The Lions could start 5 - 0. And isn't that the cool part of HS Football. Anything is possible before game one.

You could be right about Louisa , will be a tough game for sure. But Sherando is home opening against Louisa. Sherando upset Louisa last year at home on opening night.

My mistake but last year's game was no upset. The Warriors were way better.

But like I said, the Lions can never be underestimated. They will fight and they are a team that is up and down. One week they just don't have it. The next week, they look like world beaters. I know the Warriors won't underestimate them but I'm hoping for a good game.

By the way. How did you like the Lion's Den? Every player I've known looked forward to playing there. Some would think that's odd when a home field advantage is involved. But the intimidation factor of home field advantage at Louisa is about "0". The kids just love the place.

I thought it was a nice place to see a game, field in good condition , bent grass, etc etc......other than that- no lion , no parachutes, nothing spectacular for me. All the excitement was from the Warriors team that night. Was a decent crowd but not as crowded I have seen regularly at a Sherando game and other teams home fields we play at. The visitors side bleachers had a massive Hornets nest underneath that nobody from the Louisa would remove , so all the fans on the visitors side had to slide to one end constantly looking out for bees flying around you. Overall , would never go back unless the Warriors were playing there, wasn't a pleasant experience for me. Guess every team has bad nights. I left unimpressed .

Really? No Fireworks? No Lion? No parachutes on opening night? And you know this grass HS field was voted the best in the Nation only a few years ago. And the home side was not packed with standing room only?

It has been a few years since I've been there but all that is vey surprising.

The bee's I understand. That's not good. All coming from you, I take at face value and accept. Hope the Warriors have a great season.

I was unimpressed with my visit their last season. I really think it was the lighting that did it for me. Just seemed darker than it should have been, much like old Victory Stadium in Roanoke for anybody that played/watched games there in the late stages before it was torn down. A 49-12 drubbing we took probably didn't help.

On the positive side the natural grass was impeccable and the buffet offered to coaches/media in the press box pregame was impressive. The fireworks and cannon just didn't do it for me. I think people hyped it so much that I was expecting more than what I saw.

Stadium wise, Salem, Franklin County, JF, City Stadium(Lynchburg), Miller Stadium(Bluefield) were the top 5 I got to play in. As a fan, Salem, City Stadium, Oscar Smith, Darling Stadium(Hampton), Richlands, Amherst, Pulaski are nice places to watch a game.

I expect a good game also Shauntclair, we are very good in a lot of positions, and alsoquite young in a few positions . Fischer has a reputation of always going for it on fourth down, last year it hurt him. This year who knows what will happen. I expect a very competitive game, with Rivers maybe taking this game over late. He can do a lot of stuff on both sides of the ball. Either way I excited for another year of high school football, my favorite time of year.

From the day after the Western game last season:
I was there last night. Ask LouisaDad. The Lions hung tough for a while and it looked like they would make a come back but WA just ran away in the second half.

I'm anxious for it too. Should be fun.

FYI. Rivers has been on my list of kids to watch since last year. Seen his film many times. Hell of a player. He's got the stuff. Should be a pleasure for you this year. GL.

Question for the Lions is going to be how good they are up front and how healthy they can stay up front. Also, i know that some coaches have left to pursue other interests so change could be good or bad for the Lions.

Yeah, and I'm Vince Lombardi.
could you be this jealous? I'm not going to start another season by spanking you out of the gate. But the company was cwimports and LouisaDad knew I was at the game. We are in touch often about the state of the Lions. Have a good night Vince.

Jealous??? o_O This is my last post. Shauntclair, Louisadad said he never saw you that night. I know he wouldn't lie for no reason.

When did you play at Salem? Didn't you host Salem in the playoffs your senior year?

That is correct. He would not lie. But he can confirm that he knew I was coming the day before. He knew the reason and that we texted before, during and after the game. He's a Coach. It was not my place to disrupt his interaction with the team on game night. I felt that was appropriate behavior.

Funny how this started because I said what a nice place Louisa was to play.
