THE RVA SPORTS BREAKDOWN:

VHSL Football Region Standings and Analysis For Week 9

CLASS 6, REGION A:

1) OSCAR SMITH (7-0) 33.143
2) GLEN ALLEN (6-1) 31.0
3) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (5-2) 29.429
4) THOMAS DALE (4-3) 27.857
5) MANCHESTER (4-3) 25.714
6) WESTERN BRANCH (3-4) 24.571
7) DEEP RUN (3-5) 22.875
8) GRASSFIELD (2-5) 22.857
---
9) MEADOWBROOK (3-5) 22.375
10) COSBY (3-4) 22.143
11) LANDSTOWN (2-5) 22.0

ANALYSIS: Oscar Smith can all but clinch the #1 seed with a victory at home this Friday against 7-0 King's Fork. Their final two games are against teams under .500 in Hickory and Western Branch. Glen Allen's final three opponents are all currently under .500 (Deep Run, J.R. Tucker, Mills Godwin). With a win Friday, the Tigers get an extra 14 points for defeating a 7-0 team, while Glen Allen would only garner six bonus points by defeating Deep Run, who is in a dogfight to earn a postseason bid. The bottom five teams in the region are all within a point of each other. Only two will advance. Both the Wildcats and Meadowbrook have the disadvantage of already playing eight games, while the rest have seven. In the middle, Highland Springs could certainly catch Glen Allen if the Jaguars slip. The Springers' final three opponents all currently have five wins, 15 combined. Glen Allen's opponents have a combined seven currently. Thomas Dale certainly has the inside track on the fourth seed. A Manchester win over L.C. Bird Friday provides hope for the Lancers to overtake the Knights.

REGION 6B: 1) Stafford 33.714; 2) Battlefield 31.714; 3) North Stafford 31.0; 4) Patriot 30.857

CLASS 6, REGION A:

1) OSCAR SMITH (8-0)* 34.75 (W=34, L=19)
2) HIGHLAND SPRINGS (6-2)* 32.0 (W=38, L=21)
3) GLEN ALLEN (7-1)* 31.75 (W=28, L=16)
4) THOMAS DALE (5-3)* 28.5 (W=34, L=19)
5) MANCHESTER (5-3)* 27.875 (W=28, L=16)
6) WESTERN BRANCH (3-5) 24.375 (W=30, L=17)
7) GRASSFIELD (2-6) 23.25 (W=32, L=18)
8) DEEP RUN (3-6) 22.889 (W=32, L=18)
---
9) COSBY (3-5) 22.75 (W=36, L=20)
10) MEADOWBROOK (3-6) 22.444 (W=40, L=22)
11) LANDSTOWN (2-6) 22.125 (W=28, L=16)

ANALYSIS: Five teams know they can prepare for beyond Week 11, as they have earned their way into the postseason. Revised VHSL numbers, which omitted a win by a team defeated by Highland Springs last week, breaks the second place tie posted earlier Monday on "X" with Glen Allen. The Springers would have to lose a game for Glen Allen to retake the third seed because of better quality remaining opponents for Highland Springs. The battle here now is can Deep Run, Cosby, and/or Meadowbrook make it. Western Branch and Grassfield meet this week, and it would likely behoove the local teams to root for Western Branch. Yes, that would likely take the #6 seed out of contention, but would have Grassfield fall back to them. Deep Run finishes Thursday at a Mills Godwin team that is struggling, while Cosby has L.C. Bird and Meadowbrook finishes with Dinwiddie. Should Western Branch win, it's five teams for two berths next week in the season finales, with the Wildcats scoreboard watching.

OTHER CLASS 6 REGIONS (State Semifinals: 6A vs. 6B; 6C vs. 6D):

REGION 6B: 1) Stafford 32.875; 2) Battlefield 32.25; 3) North Stafford 31.750; 4) Patriot 31.625
REGION 6C: 1) Hayfield 32.286; 2) Lake Braddock 29.25; 3) Fairfax 27.75; 4) West Springfield/South County (tie) 25.875
REGION 6D: 1) James Madison 34.0; 2) Washington-Liberty 33.0; 3) Langley 31.25; 4) Westfield 29.875

THE BREAKDOWN: VHSL Football Region Standings Entering Week 11

X--Clinched Playoff Berth
Z--Clinched Seed (can't move up or down)

CLASS 6, REGION A
:

1) Z--Oscar Smith (9-0) 35.556
2) X--Highland Springs (6-3) 31.889
3) X--Glen Allen (8-1) 31.444
4) X--Manchester (6-3) 28.667
5) X--Thomas Dale (5-4) 28.0
6) X--Western Branch (4-5) 25.667
7) Landstown (3-6) 23.222
8) Grassfield (2-7) 23.111
---
9) Cosby (3-6) 22.778
10T) Deep Run (3-7) 22.7
Meadowbrook (3-7) 22.7

NOTES: Deep Run and Meadowbrook must scoreboard watch as their regular seasons are completed, and they need Cosby, Grassfield and Landstown to all lose for any change, which is already slim. Cosby also needs Grassfield and Landstown to lose and a win over Manchester to get in. The Lancers and Thomas Dale may end facing each other in the first round, the question is where. Glen Allen roots for Hanover to upset Highland Springs to have a shot at the #2 seed, which would give them home field for both the regional quarterfinals and semifinals. The Springers clinch #2 with a victory. Even if Western Branch stunned Oscar Smith, their lead for the top seed is insurmountable.
