The Roanoke Times had its Top 10 list but here is another opinion as the season gets underway…

1. Hidden Valley - HV has tons of height and offense as they only lost their starting setter and libero off last year's Final Four team.
2. Patrick Henry - returns virtually its entire team from last year's state qualifying team.

3. Cave Spring - won its 5th state title in 10 years last season but lost 4 senior starters and is very young this year.
4. Lord Botetourt - returns a lot of starters off last year's team that finished strong.

5. Auburn - powered by Radford-signee Jordan Watson, Auburn should contend for a state title in A.

6. Gate City - should contend for a state title in A.

7. Jefferson Forest - young team returns and should be one of top teams in Seminole this season.
8. EC Glass - last year's state qualifying team should be one of top teams in Seminole again this season.
9. Roanoke Catholic - won states last year and returns most everyone so should contend for state title again this season.

10. Northside - has a good mix of returning players and new talent that should make them compete with LB for top spot in BRD.

*** Others To Watch: Altavista, Blacksburg, Eastside, Franklin County, James River, Liberty Christian, North Cross, Patrick County, Radford, Salem.

This list is based primarily on returning players from last year and any new varsity players that can have an immediate impact. I'm sure this list will look different in a few weeks/months. What does everyone else think? What teams are too high or too low or missing entirely? Post your own list or just post your proposed changes...

I hadn't considered Brookville. Are they supposed to be good this year? I had heard that JF & ECG were likely the top 2 teams in their district but that is only a (slightly) educated guess. Who else in Seminole will be good this year?

After the first couple weeks of volleyball action, here is an updated Top 10 List (as of 8/31/12):

1) Hidden Valley (2-0) - dropped a game to LCA on Thursday but dominated Franklin County.

2) Cave Spring (0-0) - hasn't played a match yet but moves up a spot after PH's loss.

3) Roanoke Catholic (4-0) - makes big move from 9th to 3rd after impressive wins over Northside & PH.

4) Auburn (3-0) - off to a great start with 3-0 wins over Franklin County, Blacksburg, & Christiansburg.

5) Patrick Henry (1-1) - dominated Salem but lost to Roanoke Catholic. PH stays in top 5.

6) Northside (7-1) - has already played 8 matches with only loss to Roanoke Catholic. Beat JF in 3.

7) Lord Botetourt (2-0) - wins over two single A teams to start season (James River and Glenvar).

8) EC Glass (2-0) - still early but may be team to beat in Seminole. Beat Franklin County in 3.

9) Jefferson Forest (1-1) - beat Staunton River in 3 but lost to Northside in 3.

10) Gate City (TBD) - no results reported but should be solid.

*** Others To Watch: Altavista, Blacksburg, Eastside, Giles, James River, Liberty Christian, North Cross, Patrick County, Radford, Salem.

This list is based on expectations and very early season results. I'm sure this list will look different in a few weeks. What does everyone else think? What teams are too high or too low or missing entirely? Post your own list or just post your proposed changes...

Re: Top Teams in SW & Central VA (9/14/12)

After the first 3 weeks of volleyball action, here is an updated Top 10 List:

1) Hidden Valley (8-2) ? Lost 2 matches at Va. Beach tourney but still undefeated in area and dominated Roanoke Catholic in 3 easy games.
2) Cave Spring (3-0) ? undefeated but hasn't looked polished yet with very young line-up.
3) Auburn (7-0) ? remains undefeated with recent wins over Northside, Blacksburg, & LB.
4) Roanoke Catholic (8-1) ? got dominated by HV but still off to a good start.
5) Patrick Henry (2-3) ? wins over Salem & EC Glass. Losses to Roanoke Catholic, CS, & HV.
6) EC Glass (6-2) ? impressive wins over LCA & Western Albemarle. Losses to PH and Albemarle.
7) Salem (7-1) ? 4 wins over very weak Fleming & Byrd teams but did beat Northside and LB. Lost to PH in 3.
8) Lord Botetourt (4-2) ? wins over 3 single A teams to start season. Losses to Auburn and Salem.
9) Patrick County (8-0) ? easy schedule but undefeated nonetheless. Lead by Hannah Helbert.
10) Altavista (6-1) - split with Brookville and also beat Staunton River & Rustburg,

*** Others To Watch: Blacksburg (6-5), Brookville (6-2), Craig County (5-1), Eastside, Galax (7-1), Gate City, Giles (7-0), Grayson County (6-1), James River (6-5), Jefferson Forest, Liberty Christian, North Cross (6-1), Northside (7-5).

I'm sure this list will look different (again) in a few weeks. What does everyone else think? What teams are too high or too low or missing entirely? Post your own list or just post your proposed changes...
