Nansemond River (3-2) at Indian River (4-1) . . . Glenwood Ferebee’s Indian River Braves are coming off a heart-breaking 15-14 loss to Oscar Smith in which the Tigers scored two touchdowns in the game’s final 3:24 to overcome a 12-point deficit and extend their Southeastern District winning streak to 79 games. The Braves put forth one of the best defensive showings in recent memory against the Tigers, but the offense sputtering in the early going and special teams lapses late prevented them from staying undefeated.

A year ago, this was in many ways the breakout game for Indian River, cruising to a 43-21 win at Nansemond River. Quarterback Tyre Givers-Wilson completed 16 of 18 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns that night with two of those aerial scoring strikes to Kyren Best, who hauled in six passes for 115 yards. Best has caught a touchdown pass in every game this season. To go with that passing game, they now have a significant presence running the football. Great Bridge transfer Tyain Smith (572Yds. 6TD’s), has added another dimension to the offense.

Nansemond River’s running game, led by Terrence Lambert (67Car. 591Yds. 8TD’s) has been a major reason why the Warriors got off to their first 3-1 start since 1999. However, a failed two-point conversion following Demetrius Stitmon’s touchdown reception kept them from forcing overtime in a 28-26 home loss to Western Branch. They’re going to have to be able to pressure Givers-Wilson into mistakes on offense while getting their own QB, Kiere Landry, to make good reads against a stingy defense that feeds off turnovers with LB’s Tavante Beckett (Va. Tech commit) and Jaquan Yulee (Alabama commit) leading the way.
