Varina Blue Devils

@BoKnowsSports, I know Wyche had a breakout game against Highland Springs, but do you think he is the answer to an under achieving offense. He's fast and appears to have a good arm. Varina weakness seems to continue to be the running game. I know Birds defense is elite, so I can't go off the lack of scoring in the scrimmage. What you think?

Though Varina has tons of talent, I don’t think they improved that much offensively. They actually lost guys like Eric Smith (Liberty), Jordan Edwards (CNU), Tay Gilpin (CNU), Nasir Smith (CNU), Mali Cosby.. That’s a lot of offensive production gone from an already struggling offense. Wyche will give them a dual threat but they still lack a run game. Dinwiddie, KG, Huguenot and EV will all be elite running teams. Varina will be excellent defensively, but if their defense gives up >14 against a team like Powahtan, KG or Dinwiddie, will the offense hold up? D1 Carter is dynamic (may be the best offensive player not named Harry Dalton), Wyche is legit, and two really good JV guys moving up in Breon Bonner and Tre Rogers who will replace some of those guys that graduated on offense.

I wasn't at the scrimmage but play calling creativity and slow O-line play has been the major issues to me. Bo did you hear about if the O-line looked improved at all? I don't think Kaleb needs much space to work but the Oline will have to give the young man some running seams to burst through. If you look at Dinwiddie's line they aren't always mashing people down the field but they move very fast and get on their blocks in a hurry.

I think the O-line will be their strong suit. Jaiden Baskerville (6’4 250), EJ Shaw (6’2 240), Big Bull Richardson who IMO is the best defensive linemen in the state (all classifications) will play guard, Jaiden Wellons (6’3 250), Karen Gash (6’3 250).. They’ll be improved on the offensive line. I’m just very skeptical on their play calling and not having a run game. I think they have some guys who can run the ball, but they also had some last year and never put those guys in position to make plays.

What about the very large freshman o-lineman from Tennessee that’s getting raves all over the internet, driving a Bird defender into to sideline! He’s about 6’6-260(reportedly).

Not the same kid, Dylan Washington came from Tenn playing DL about 5'10. Jarmel Powell Jr is the one on the internet, he grew up in the East End. Both will be studs playing JV this season.

That’s tough! Varina has a lot of talent in their program. Their defense will be very fast and physical and probably top 5 regardless of classification. If the offense can score, they’ll be a very tough out in C4.
