The House of Delegates failed to override the Governor's Veto of the Tebow Bill. At least our folks in Richmond are doing something right.

Really? Sounded like a good idea. We had former homeschoolers join our teams at Strasburg a number of years ago and were quite successful, but they had to attend the HS. I don't see why they should have to quit their style of education just to play on the team.

We make so many other exceptions to give people opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have (girls playing on boys teams, for example), why not here?

On the other hand, why should someone play on a team and represent a school they don't attend? The major point should be that the local school district or school should be able to decide, not further clogging/bloating our state gov't. with useless regulation.

Strongly disagree, NavyEM1. There needs to be equity & home-schoolers have chosen to forego all the bad things that come with public education. They also don't get to share in the good things. That's how life works. You don't get to pick & choose.

Without academic oversight, you lose the equity because the athletes attending school have minimum academic requirements. Home-schooled students simply can't be held to the same standard in an honest way.

Glad the governor veto'd & glad there's enough common sense in the House to block this.

EM1, I won't speak to the issues on either side of the Tebow Bill argument. But I do disagree with your contention that it should be a decision left to a school or district. It can't be set up that way. One school allows it and other schools you compete against do not? That's not equitable.

If my kid was a standout athlete, and for my own reasons I want to continue to provide a home school education, I would figure a way to get him enrolled in the school that allows home schoolers to participate in athletics, (because there are no other options that provide him similar opportunities). And the word is now out and other parents decide to do what I did. How would that be fair to this school's competition? And how could it be explained as being a fair practice to the kid who didn't make the team for this school, t(hat he has lived near all his life), because they allowed in some kids that were there because this is the only school that voted to allow this practice?

In my eyes, it's either everybody or nobody.

Also EM1, I'm curious about something. How the heck have you been a forum member since 2006 and this is your first post?

Regardless, welcome! We look forward to enjoying your input.
