VHSL 2A All State Football Team

Smith wins Coach of the Year in the State, but could only manage "Co-Coach of the Year" in the West.....this is getting better by the day.

You've won 30 straight games and 2 straight titles, why are you concerned that your coach got "Co-Coach" at the regional level? He was the sole COY for State, isn't that all that matters?? Not everything is a slight to Appomattox, ya know lol.

Who said anything about it being a "slight" against Appo? I just find it comical how a guy can't even win "Coach of the Year" in his own Region, yet does in the State.

Well let's not speculate, definitely not "upset" about a guy not winning COY in the West, I'm sure Smith could care less as well, I mean his 2 State Championship rings are in his ears, he can't hear the banter. I just believe the powers that be are making themselves look foolish when a guy can't win COY in 2A West, yet does in the entire State. This isn't a slight against Richlands either, I know Mance was Co-COY this year, solid coach, but definitely doesn't deserve COY in the West with Smith being there.

The coaches of the last two remaining teams from each region were co-coach of the year. Not a slight, but just the best alternative since they conceivably could have gone without playing each other.

Glad Appomattox got better represented on this. I do have one gripe though. No Appomattox players made 2nd team? None? Not one?

I know many on here bash @Jdphil2 for speaking out about stats, but I agree with him on the All State team being more of a popularity contest.

There's always gonna be a snub here or there. Scottie Ball wasn't selected to 1st or 2nd team of the SEC, West, or State teams. But it is what it is.

Every eligible Appomattox player made the first team, thus no second team. You have to be 1st team all region to be eligible for all state. I agree that some more Appo players should have been first team all region. If they had been, then they would be eligible for all state.

They must got the most illiterate person typing these list then

It says Carter JAMIESON? Its Jamerson.

Plus I know the process about 1st team region being the qualified ones for All State. I was just griping...

Hope yall had a good holiday season and good New Year.

Stats are only thing they go by...I saw the Richlands QB and many others and he is NOT the best player in 2A...but when you throw it every play you are gonna have video game type stats and thus he is the POY

If this is truly a stats-based award, find me a player who had more yards and accounted for more TDs than JLA. It's not his fault our offense didn't have a consistent running game. He went as he was told. He could have had a LOT more. Voluntarily pulled himself out of the Va. High game when he needed 1 more TD pass to break the state record for most in a game. Kid is a humble as it gets. The honor is well deserved, imo.

I honestly don't know how JLA won POY. I watched the Appo/Richlands game and the 5 best football players on the field were wearing Appo jerseys. Again....this isn't a slight towards him or Richlands and I don't believe Appo was slighted, but anyone with an IQ over potato could tell who the best players on the field were.

No one is bashing the kid or saying he isn't humble, people who've seen him play just don't believe he is deserving of the best football player in the state for 2A. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not arguing stats, I'm arguing who's the best football player, Appo had 5-6 players better than anyone on Richlands. Stats didn't tell me that, my eyes did.

The best athlete on the offensive side of the ball I saw all year was the Scruggs kid from Appo (but he was a heck of a DB on the defensive side). His running and throwing abilities at the QB spot were top of the class. His passing stats were not near that of the Ashury, but he has the rushing stats would make up for it. I would also think he has passing/rushing TD's to put him near the top of the list of the top players in the state. I am guessing he was overlooked by others who had far more passing stats.

Maybe the coaches just thought Asbury was the best player for the whole season. Remember that he put up big numbers that led to wins over good teams, when everyone knew Richlands wasn't going to run the ball much. A lot of short term memory because he struggled the last couple games, but Appomattox and Stuarts Draft made a bunch of good offenses look average this year.

I will agree after seeing Scruggs a couple times, he is the real deal for Appomattox.

What I'm saying is that stats are the only reason he is POY...not saying he isn't a great kid cause I don't know him....all I'm saying is there were better players than him that should have won POY before him....But just my opinion

JLA is just the guy who has to take the nay-sayers due to the fact that he won the award. But putting up huge numbers against Battle, Lebanon, Grundy, VA High, Central, Gate City, etc.. isn't the same as playing against the top of the class. I am speaking solely from watching both teams play, JLA wasn't the best player in the state, heck, he wasn't even the best player on the field against Appo, yet he won the award. Congrats to him on winning the award, but in no way does this award deem him the best football player in the state.

I know you're going to keep arguing your point like everyone hasn't already read it 5 times already but historically, in any sport, & at any level, what leads you to believe that the Player of the Year Award will be awarded to the "best" or "most talented player?

If that was the case then Lebron would have every MVP from 2006 to now & Randy Moss would have some trophies too.

Opinions on Defensive Ends that made 1st team and 2nd team? After watching tape on all 4 (watched on hudl) I believe the 2 best are on the 2nd team. Opinions?

I'll stand by our DE from Goochland.... He flat out could play football. Great blend of speed and strength that could get after the quarterback... Everybody's entitled to their opinions but Clay brooks was a big difference maker for Goochland and we'll miss him next year... Glad he was recognized for this award...

Go watch Bryce Carter from Stuarts Draft. He is better than all four of them. He mashed My hornets and every team Draft played. Was really surprised he didn't make first team all region.

I watched him and he's good, but not better then the 4 that made it. Watch the 4 that made it and youll see them attack the los and the ball. However, he is an excellent LG and maybe could have made it at that position.

He's very good and all 4 deserved the all state honor. I played DE and have a soft spot for the position. Love watching players that know how to play DE and feel the 2 on 2nd team knew how and when to strike, coming off blocks, setting up the tackle, but I enjoyed watching tape on all 4. I'd like to watch the ones moving on play in college. Any of them going?

I think Carter made all state at OL.
He did. I just checked. I watched film on him looking to see if he was better then the 4 that got honors at DE and said he could have made state as a OL and he did. Way better as a G then DE.

Hey wasn't a guard, he was a tackle. I think the biggest omission from Stuarts Draft was Tucker Rost

I have said this for years and still believe it, but I think all conference/region/state should be purely on blind stats. I feel that coaches should submit their players names and stats to the conference and when it is time to vote, you should only be able to see the stats. You don't need to see the school or the name, just the stats. I hear to many times how coaches lobby for their kids and talk about how they are a good kid, don't present any stats, and the kid lands 1st team because they are a good kid and played on a winning team. The current process makes even less sense when you reach the region level and not all of the coaches are even invited to come vote. What coach is going to go and represent and speak on the behalf of another schools player when that player is up against his own? And for those who say that all conference/region/state really don't mean anything, you should talk to the kids who unjustly get omitted and you should also talk to college recruiters, who do put stock into these post season awards. Helps them find those kids from smaller, out of the way schools, who could be college worthy. I've had them tell me themselves, that they stumble across a kid because they saw the name on an award list and then looked up their film on hudl.
