Wow there seems to be a HUGE Eastern bias on this list. Congrats to all the recipients but man there are some real head scratchers.

First off, congrats to all the players who were awarded. A couple head scratchers for me are Driscoll as 2nd team DL and Fluud not making either team as QB. Losing out to a pair of Juniors QBs? Politics reign supreme.
3 Blacksburg players chosen and none on the 1st team? They could have possibly won the title if not for a great comeback by Salem. (Idk how they would have matched up with Louisa)

So I was at the meeting as I have been for the past 5 years and you can say politics rain Supreme, but that wasn't the case. Coaches have to show up to the meeting and fight for their kids point blank. I got into an conversation with a friend today because of this team.
Coaches go to the meeting to fight for their kid, and if they play against a kid from a team that is good they will give him their props which I heard numerous times. What a coach will not do is fight for a kid they don't know. If you as a coach have a kid you think is deserving you can do one of two things..1) show up for the meeting as anyone is allowed to come..One coach showed up because he had one kid nominated in a position and spoke for his kid. 2) send stats to a coach that you know is going to the meeting. Too many times a kid name comes up and no one has played the kid so they don't know much about them. What does Coach Mags know about a kid from Deep Creek? Or what does Coach Mills know about a kid from Pulaski Co? Are they suppose to be keeping tabs on what other players in the state are doing? Going off of reputation only?
We had two coaches that were regional runner ups not even show up. That's hurting the kids in the end. You have a kid put it on the line for you all season and when its time for you to show up and fight for them you no show. That's unacceptable point blank and its not Coach Whoevers job to fight for your kid you didn't even show up for that kid.

I thought I was looking at an all region list at first, not all state. Have to look hard to find any west players.

Offensive player of year and Defensive player of the year both Louisa. Great players, but did anyone watch the State Championship game? There wasn't much question who the best player on the field was. Salem will take the team trophy over the individual accolades, but wow. Blacksburg really got screwed. Beck scores five touchdowns in the playoffs against the eventual State Champions and he's on the second team? Wow. Thought Nate Craft would get first team kicker. Was nice to see Quinn and Wade get recognized.

Eastern Bias?? Region A is the Eastern schools: 3 players on first team O and 2 on first team D.
More like Central bias based solely on numbers...Region B: 8 players first team O 6 players first team D.

Just for numbers perspective: 1st team Offense: Region A 3, Region B 8, Region C 3, Region D 2
1st team Defense: Region A 2, Region B 6, Region C 5, Region D 3

So lets look at a couple of things with your argument. Ramsey was probably the best player in the state this year, but for some odd reason the coaches in your own region decided to name the RB from Amherst and the WR from Blacksburg region players of the year. Whalen had a big year at RB, Butts put up crazy numbers at KF this year and will probably be Tidewater POY, and you just said how good Ramsey was. So who do you knock off the first team? Just because Beck is fast and gave Salem 5 TD's he's the best? Just asking...Nate Craft was 4/9 on FG's this year and is a damn good kicker, but I think this year the other kid was a stronger candidate and the coaches felt like it. Now does that mean Nate Craft isn't a good kicker? Nope just wasn't the best in 4A this year. Not a lifetime achievement award.

All that needs to be said.............

1 first team selection (other than Salem player) west of Charlottesville.

Kicking includes kickoffs, not just field goal percentage. Beck was not just fast. Can't do this by numbers alone. Heck some of these kids don't get to play much in the second half because their team is destroying their opponent. The process in picking these teams is broken. Maybe this board can come up with replacement process.

Geographic bias exist in this State in a lot of areas, and unfortunately it has showed it's ugly head again. A lot of folks think Virginia ends west of Charlottesville.

And the coach from Dinwiddie talked bout how his kid put 80% of his kickoffs for Touchbacks. Just saying man Kraft is a great kicker just wasn't his year. Last year he was first and the Dinwiddie kid was 2nd this year they switched. Nothing wrong with being 2nd team all state. The process isn't broken the mindset of some coaches is what makes this a bad situation. It happens everywhere and on every team I've seen it voted on. Conference, District, Region, and State level where a coach is going in the meeting and no matter how good or bad his kid is he is voting him the top kid. I did the tabulation of the votes and some of the selections are head scratchers. But its the system.

Where did this meeting take place?

Reading other places, it seems Salem folks are very upset and feel wronged. They seem to think they were left off on purpose. Maybe So? Since I dont know the players, who do the Salem faithful think should have been there thst weren't and who do you remove to make room for them. I also saw the complaining about the all star game?

Someone said the system is broken. So the coaches selecting it isn't Good? Would it be better if it were news writers? Or should it be fans? I'm confused

The process is broken. I don't agree with a lot on this list. Why is it so heavy for region B? Sad they just look at stats. I'd be sitting in the meeting pulling up highlight film! Lol

Mundy, Cardwell, and Close should be on the list from Salem. 2 of them
are Jr's, so I understand giving the seniors a nod.

Monacan and your coach was present.
Not so much concerned with the lack of Salem players on the lists (although Ramsey player of the year was a no brainer). Really has to do more with the lack of other eastern players representation. After learning meeting location, it's pretty obvious why the list is weighted the way it was. Meeting location needs to be more centralized.

Actually Salem folks were arguing more about Blacksburg players being left off. I would say it is a little strange that Salem wins the title and Louisa gets offensive and defensive players of the year. Both kids were great players but that does kinda jump out at you.

Yea, it's absolutely on the coaches but feel like the East should be slightly more aware of the West than they are because outside of Salem forcing them to acknowledge the West it doesn't seem to happen much. It shouldn't strictly be "OK I voted for 2 kids from Salem that's it for the West, right?", they're the other half of the equation I don't necessarily think you should need to be reminded about the other 50% of the state. That's like having two kids and just Christmas shopping for one until your husband or wife reminds you that you have two kids not one.

The West almost certainly doesn't fight as hard on this as the East and that's essentially the bottom line and if they want more they'll simply have to yell louder.

Just from a guess I'm sure the meeting place was an easier trek for the East so that almost certainly influences things as well. I bet if you held the meeting in Lynchburg things might change, too.

I think Salem fans arguing for more than they got are pushing it outside of Ramsey for POTY which seems pretty agreeable to non-Salem fans. But most of us are just arguing about the poor representation of the West, specifically the part of the West that's actually west and not "so far north and heavily populated if we counted this as east there'd be like 10 West schools".

0 from GW Danville, 0 from Blacksburg, 0 from Amherst, JF, etc. it just seems a bit more lopsided than it should be.

Monacan being the location for the meeting is part of the problem. Need to have a more centralized meeting location (or virtual) that gives western coaches (whom are also teachers) a more reasonable opportunity to attend.

Hold the meeting by conference call or Skype. Or give the process to a group of reporters or a panel picked by athletic directors Could be about 9 people whose job during the season is watch these teams and accumulate stats and video. I nominate 1moreHokie, Dinwiddie proud/Bleeding navy, Lafayette to start with

Any coach that was a voting coach(I.e. Last 8 playing) who didn't show up should be penalized by his region. It's their job to go and represent. If they can't attend for some reason, then it goes to whoever they beat in the 2nd round to replace them. To not show and not send a replacement is inexcusable.

Another big part of the problem is limiting kids who had to be on the region lists and whatnot. The regions are what they are and when you discuss state you start fresh.

A virtual meeting is a NO BRAINER! It's almost 2018 everyone! It's not like we don't have the technology.

The location changes each year.

Should be in cville each year. Still a little east but close to center of state. But virtual meeting better answer. I still like that appointed committee idea
Ramsey should have been opy and Beck first team , Whalen or Butts second. Fisher coach of the year or co coach of the year

First of all everyone needs to read Devils post closely. The meeting site changes every year, so that is not a factor. I had to travel to Northern Va, The beach and lynchburg while coaching and never complained, because I wanted my kids recognized. Why did the coaches fail to show up? Obviously, the Blacksburg coach stayed at home. I can tell you if you dont sell the deserving/right players you argument is going to be questioned. There are four first team region teams and one state team. Hypothetically, 104 players eligigible for spots for 26 on the first team and 26 on the second team. That eliminates half of the players.

Second, hold the coaches in your own region accountable. Players must be first team all region to be all state. They must choose wisely. The region coaches screw their own kids whether it be politcal or not. Lets look at the first team qb. There were 4 choices only. Pope from Dinwiddie got it. Fludd may be better, but he did not make first team region b thus not eligible. Same can be said across the board. It all falls back on the region coaches.

Lastly, its impossible to make everyone happy. I agree there are a few ommissions and two or three players on the list who shouldnt be, but there really isnt a better process. In the grand scheme of things it doesnt mean very much other than pride. Just something for fans to gripe about. If you really wanted to get a true all state team based on ability you could ask the college recruiters. No one would want that I am sure.

So what you are saying a kid who isnt good enough to be selected all region by the coaches who know him well should be considered for all state by three regions coaches who may not know the kid at all. Wow! That would be a disaster.

Like I said BleedingN, this board could have done a better job. Process broken. Virtual meeting better idea. I still like appointed committee idea. You would be great on it
