Cornelious Cousins Jr., a former Hermitage standout track and field star, and Heath Miller, a former University of Virginia All-America tight end and Honaker High School three-sport athlete, highlight the eight-member class of 2016 that was selected to the Virginia High School Hall of Fame, the VHSL announced Tuesday.
Cousins was considered the top track athlete in the Richmond metro area during the 1970s, as he ranked nationally in four events — triple jump, long jump, intermediate hurdles and high hurdles. Cousins, nicknamed “Bang,” was a three-time state champion triple jumper, two-time state champion long jumper and a state champion intermediate hurdler.
Cousins’ 50-feet, 5-inch triple jump was the longest high school mark in the nation in 1979. Cousins became an All-American and ACC triple jump champion at the University of Maryland.
Miller, who ended his U.Va. career as the ACC’s all-time leader among tight ends in receptions, while winning the John Mackey Award as the top college tight end in the nation, was a first-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005. Miller won two Super Bowls and was a two-time Pro Bowler.
Before his U.Va. career, Miller was a three-sport standout at Honaker (1997-2001), where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Miller started three years at quarterback for Honaker and passed for 4,410 yards and 54 touchdowns and rushed for 1,701 yards and 22 scores. He also racked up 166 tackles and 11 interceptions as a defensive back.
Miller scored 913 points and grabbed 742 rebounds in his three years starting on the basketball team. He was also a four-year starter on the baseball team and hit .500 for his career.
Cousins and Miller join Meg Turner (basketball) of George Wythe-Wytheville, as the only three athletes selected into this year’s class.
Four coaches were named to the hall as well: Robin Dotson (Central-Wise), Tom Harding (Honaker), Joel Hicks (Pulaski County) and Munro Rateau (Fluvanna County). B.J. Carroll of Galax was selected to the hall of fame as a contributor.
The 27th Virginia High School Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held Oct. 12 in Charlottesville.
