Notes on the Top Ten - Week 5

1) As always, I welcome dissent and debate. Heck, that's what makes it fun. Of course, if you agree, that's cool, too.

2) I still have Riverheads as the Top team (expecting them to win tonight, if they do not, maybe an adjustment will be in order). East Rock is rolling in 2A.

3) Man, it was hard for me not to include Essex in a Top Ten. They have been a powerhouse for so long. I still think the Trojans could make a run so we shall see.

4) Honestly, I didn't think Northumberland could beat Essex the last three seasons but was hopeful. However, imo Northumberland finally has the pieces in place. I feel that the Indians can finally knock off Essex this season. I am not saying they definitely will defeat Essex, just that Northumberland definitely can defeat Essex this year.

5) I have 8 Western teams and 6 Eastern teams listed above.

6) Please add any teams that deserve more recognition that I may have missed.

Northumberland will not beat Essex this year. Essex D-line will dominate Northumberlands O-Line & the same on for Essex O-line will win the battle up front. Essex 35 Northumberland 7 so that means Northumberland will go 0-2 next two weeks.

tough 2wk stretch for Indians. Christchurch then Essex

Region A Playoff outlook will be interesting. My 8 teams in no particular order:
Northampton
Franklin
Northumberland
Essex
W&L
West Point
Colonial Beach
Rapp

Essex should still be ranked ahead of every team in NND, until someone beats them the Trojans are King of the Neck. A Northumberland win changes that programs mentality and demoralizes Essex.

1) Galax-gonna be a handful in playoffs, should be in Salem
2) Riverheads- needs to get the ship righted or the fall will continue
3) Franklin- fumble bug aside this team sounds legit
4) Chilhowie- should be higher but not in my poll
5) Northumberland- showing out like a champ
6) Rappahannock- still winning
7) Narrows- beating those they should soundly
8) William Campbell- fluke last night or issues?
9) PH- not getting tons of respect but solid 1A team
10) Essex- until someone beats them in playoffs I won’t drop them off my poll, dangerous as a high seed

trutiger16 - I completely understand your analysis there - and agree with it for the most part. I thought that Essex would bounce back v KW, but was beaten badly (without their best player granted, but one player should not make or break a team like Essex....).

Great poll! I think that Riverheads rights the ship...

I have seen Franklin - I think that Northumberland would beat them. Of course, just my opinion. Hope to see that match up in Heathsville!

I considered putting Essex at # 7 in my poll. I try to balance what has already happened with what may happen down the road so with them at 1-2 will see what happens very soon.

Essex may bounce back this week in Richmond and defeat 3A Thomas Jefferson. I hope that they do.

Any thoughts on this upcoming game? or any others?

Chilhowie is a hard pick After watching George Wythe play(they are really down this year) , and Grayson County beat Marion easily last night. Then looking at their schedule for the rest of the year, we honestly will not find anything truly out about Chilhowie until late in the playoffs.

They do play a pretty good 2A Virginia High Friday. So that will show more about Chilhowie. They aren't that hard of a pick because they have done everything expected of them. They haven't looked ahead of any team and have beat each one convincingly.

1. Riverheads - until someone beats them in November still the team to beat
2. Franklin - Just hold on to the dam ball
3. Essex - needs to establish an identity
4. Chilhowie - Most consistent team in 1a
5. Narrows- Benefiting from weak scheduling
6. W & L - Dangerous will get hot in the playoffs
7. WC- Improved but will not advance past the 1st round
8. Colonial Beach - solid, dangerous, will finish 2nd in the NND
9. Galax - Program has big game experience watch out
10. Northumberland- Essex stepchild will the Trojans give them a woodshed beating

I would bet at the moment that WC will get past 1st round, since I think they will be 2 seed in B. So they get a BYE :)

4)Chilhowie- a solid football team
5)Narrows- Not how good they are
6) W&L- over rated might win 5 games
7) WC- should go to second round
8) Colonial Beach- avg team will finish 3rd or 4th in the NND
9) Galax - better than everyone thinks
10) Northumberland - will Finish with 3 or 4 Ls
Two Teams everyone is sleeping on West Point & Rappahannock (Warsaw) will make statements this year in the playoffs

Still won't know anything, va high has beaten teams that have 5 wins between all of them. In not saying chilhowie is not a good football team. Just pointing out that it might be Deep in the playoffs before they have a really good team.

Thanks Triple Opt for your input. Are you thinking Chilhowie v Galax again deep in the playoffs before we know how good they both are (in state terms)?

As of right now, can some western posters chime in on which of the far West's powers look to be the best - or who you would expect to win in that battle? and maybe why...

The only thing I know for certain about a woodshed this season, is that is where the Northumberland Indians would be taking Sussex if those two programs were to play each other this year....

Probably true for this season lol, enjoy your one hit wonder the last time my Tigers were in Northumberland we put up 60 plus do you guys coach defense at all oh I forgot you are a 1 trick pony.

Instead of being a critic were is your top 10 ?
And to be honest with you I don't know enough about the eastern teams to give a accurate top 10. But I will say that I don't have a problem with Essex being in the top 10 but I would have them towards 8-10, Franklin and Galax somewhere around mid pack, Narrows behind Galax and Franklin, Riverheads and Chilhowie in the top 2.

Rappahannock just beat W&L. I know they're second loss is to KW who also beat Essex but they are 2-2. Having them in the top 10 seems to be holding onto their performance in 2017. I would think Rappahannock should at least be above them. And pending the WP/Rapp result they should probably be above them too. Looking at their remaining schedule, they may be one of the final seeds in the playoffs, dangerous matchup or not they should probably not be #6 in the state.

Top 5 IMO are last year's 4 region winners and Franklin. Riverheads lost a game, big deal. Still think they are one of the most dominant teams in the state. I think Essex still gets the 1 seed in region A if they win out. Chilhowie has been good again. Galax has dominated all but their loss to glenvar and will probably drop one to Northside but that will be the best team they'll see in the regular season or playoffs. I wansnt sold on the Franklin hype leading into the season after their 3-7 season, but beating Essex early skyrocketed them up to the top. They may lose again but the Tri Rivers is tough for a small school. Put those 5 in any order and you could have a valid argument for a top 5. After that there's a lot of teams that you could throw in there that would take sense to round out the top 10

I can see where triple Opt is coming from. I was at the GC Marion game. And both of those teams are shells of what they was last year. It happens in small schools talent cycles. And certainly not throwing shade at Chilhowie as the poster said they have took care of business on the games they should be winning easy. Not like my Hokies!!! And return all of last year's team Although looking at the schedule played and the schedule ahead I agree it will be deep in playoffs before they run up against someone who has the ability to test them. Not their fault just the way the stars align.
As for other teams out of the west GW will continue to get better and could knock off someone in the playoffs if they slip up and overlook them.
Galax is the enigma out of the west for me. Beat Glenvar in every aspect of the game except the score board then struggled a little at the start of the Carroll County game although alot of that could be attributed to Turner coaching at GHS last year and his familiarity with the strengths weakness and tendacies.
As well as Dixon has used the starting two backs very sparingly. One with limited action and the other hasn't touched the ball as of yet. (both have been a little nicked up as well)
Galax plays power house Northside this Friday. If Dixon plays everyone we will know alot more about Galax and how they stack up against a very very good 4a team. Or he could keep some out to get healthy and we still wont know the full picture yet.

All of this is in my humble opinion.

As of now the Glenvar game was the best Galax has played. The first half against Radford wasn't anything to write home about and they didn't look particularly good against Carroll or Rural Retreat but played plenty well enough to beat them both by fairly large margins. If they can stay healthy and they play to their capabilities they will be hard to beat the second half of the season and into the playoffs.
