Another great season of football has wrapped up and our last bit of information about the year comes in the form of the VirginiaPreps.com All-State teams.

Before we get to the announcement of the honorees, let's take a quick moment to review the standards that we've put into place around the teams that we name each season.

First, we limit ourselves to just twelve players on each side of the ball with four specialists and one coach of the year. We also pick just one player on each side of the ball to be our player of the year which forces us to make very difficult decisions. Last but not least, because we limit the team to a mere 28 total players and because we want to honor as many as possible, we will not name a player at more than one position.

On the defensive side of the ball, we name four defensive linemen, four linebackers, three defensive backs and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

Offensively, we name a quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, five offensive linemen and one 'wildcard' position that we generically name 'athlete'.

**Note that the All-Underclass Coach of the Year is selected from a pool of coaches in their first year with their respective program**

Outstanding list and a great honor that Ben made the second team offense--very grateful for the excellent season and honor.

Riley fox is a junior
I have to say, for all you Salem fans, I absolutely love Riley Fox. I saw all the playoff games and this is a kid I want on my team, more than any other I saw as a defensive player this year. IMO and with all due respect to every other player I saw this year, who were also very good, this is the kid I want if I'm a next level Coach.

I'm guessing he's hoping for an offer from VT, since his brother Coleman is there and his dad was a FB there. I think Coleman might become a slot receiver. He's shifty and has good hands. Riley has a nose for the ball, is pretty quick for a big guy, and he likes to hit.

Beamer believed in legacy players a lot. Some worked out. Cody Grimm was one. Bruce Smith's kid, not so much.

I never believed in Fox Coleman as a DI kid and RB. All but 1 school thought the same but I now believe you could be right. Fox could make a nice slot receiver, much like the Patriot's Edelmann. I see that now. Plus Special Teams. He's like a lot of Salem kids. Nothing that pops off the screen at you but works hard, fundamentally sound and just gets the job done. Fox will catch the ball, won't fumble and get some YAC. Nothing spectacular but results you can count on, time and time again.

You're right about Riley. In the games against JF and LT, he really stood out. He'll get offers but the direction has changed at VT. The wind has changed. We'll see. He's on my track list none the less.

GL to them both.

2nd Team RB...Did you mean Deshaun Wethington from KF, not Washington?

Did C.J. Graves from GW-Danville get any consideration on this list? Not sure of his numbers, but he broke a few records at GW that were held by David Wilson!

Compiling a list like this is very difficult. 7 Spartans were chosen overall for 1st/2nd, & the Underclassmen teams, but I think the MVP for the team was likely Alex Ramsey.

His stats on Offense/Defense probably don't match up to some of the other players on this list, but he was on the field more than any other player for Salem. At FB he piled up around 1,000 rushing yards, he also caught several passes for more yards. He was an excellent blocker for his running mate Donte Clayborne.

On defense he had a nose for the football, had a lot of tackles, sacks, TFL's, QB hurries, and PD's.

I think if Alex had only played on one side of the ball he would have made many such lists, but I don't think Salem would have won the Championship. I think he will be happy with that because he seems to be a team player over a "me" player. Salem is fortunate to have many team players that might not make individual lists, but help guide their teams in other ways.

I don't mean to imply that your list is full of selfish "me" players that have no regard for team. I like that your list only recognizes a player for one position giving more players an opportunity to be chosen. I also like the Underclassmen team you've made because most teams are Senior dominated since it's their last opportunity for recognition. Overall Rod, very well done sir!
