Post 280 Smith and Post 327 Norfolk Christian squared off as the last 2 teams in the winner's bracket of the Junior American Legion District 2 Tournament held at Trant Field in Virginia Beach with the winner heading to the tournament championship round undefeated.
With the score tied 3-3 after 6, Post 327 capitalized on a leadoff walk by Minnitrone, who was followed with an RBI-triple by Sessoms. Elliott then walked to put runners on 1st & 3rd. Dennison reached and knocked a run in on an error by the Smith third baseman to leave runners at 1st & 2nd. Norfolk Christian then pulls off a double steal, moving each runner into scoring position. Then, on a failed suicide squeeze attempt and with Elliott caught between 3rd and home, the Post 280 catcher makes an errant throw into left field, scoring another run, putting Post 327 up 5-3. Thomas Packert, who relieved starter Tadd Ennis in the 7th, then struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
In the bottom of the 7th, Post 280 Smith's Tyler Ennis led off with a walk and promptly stole second base. After a strikeout, Post 280's leadoff hitter Daniel Barnett lined a base hit to centerfield, driving in Ennis to make it a 1-run game. Barnett then steals second base, putting himself in scoring position for Daniel Quan, who hit a spinning groundball that got through under the shortstop's hand, moving Barnett to third. Jae Damewood followed with a slow-roller up the 3B line that scores Barnett, tying the game, while he reaches base safely. After a pop out to the catcher, Post 280 pulled off a double-steal, moving the runners to 2nd & 3rd. Then, on a 2-ball, 2-strike count with 2-outs, Thomas Packert lined a ball deep down the right field line that barely eluded the Post 327 right fielder's glove, scoring Quan and making Post 280 Smith walk-off winners.
