LOL, the first thing that rattled my chains was being at home on a Friday night. Our game was Thursday night this week. My bio rhythms are now all out of wack.

The mess a Hayfield certainly caught my attention.

John Marshall making the mega trip across the state to play Virginia High. 640 miles round trip!! WOW. Incidentally, and understandably, I saw 4 fans in the JM stands.

Charles City won!!! 60-14 over Mathews. I looked at a few minutes of the game on NFHS Network. The first time I tuned in, CC had 11 players on the field and one, yes one, on the sidelines. Later I saw a second player, So they played and soundly won a game with 13 total players. Great job by those kids.

How about Smithfield? Another OT win. At least it didn’t take but one OT this week. 37-34 OT over New Kent.

Wm. Byrd and Staunton River also went into OT. SR went for 2 after their touchdown and Byrd stopped them. Final 21-20.

Amelia forfeited their game for next week because of a reported lack of players. So, if this is accurate, and Amelia still qualifies 8th for the playoffs, do they A). Play the game, B). Forfeit the game, or C). Remove themselves from competition and does this allow the next team to move up to 8th?

Poor Hidden Valley. They have given up 499 points in 9 games and only scored a total of 37. And, it won’t get better this week when they travel to PH. My hats off to the kids that have stuck with it and finished what they started.

I won’t say that the wheels are falling off at Lord Botetourt, but I think the lug nuts are a little loose. Their loss to Wm. Fleming after playing them about even up for much of the game didn’t shock any of us. Flemming is a pretty darn good team. But, for LB to loose to their bitter rival Northside last night definitely caused this old man to raise an eyebrow.

Darn it! I thought the Blue Steaks might get their first win last night, but it was not to be.

But, across town, Coach Cherbin and his Raptors put an old fashion whipping on Stonewall Jackson 63-0. Congrats to Rocktown.

Holston has very quietly put together a terrific season, standing now at 8-1. And those good folks around Damascus certainly need a bright spot in their lives after all of the devastation from the flooding.

Hanover came out firing on all cylinders last night. In what most of us thought would be a close game, the Hawks were all over Douglas Freeman from the opening bell. That unexpected loss by Hanover last week must have put the fire in Coach Bass and his staff.

Other than those of us in the area of the Central District, you may have said “ ho hum” so what, Hopewell beat Thomas Dale. But, in most years, even when Hopewell is their usual top shelf self, Thomas Dale takes care of business. I can’t say this is a shocker, but it sure is not football as usual. Especially when we know that this is not one of Hopewell’s particularly good teams.

Certainly there will be a game or two today that makes me say, “are you kidding?” But for now, that’s all I’ve got. But how about you? What made you say, “hey honey, so and so beat so and so!” And she replied, “that’s nice sugar, now, will you take the trash out like I asked?”

Yes, happy for Charles city winning hats off for the players and coaches with just 12 players, good win for Hopewell with so much adversity this year with the deaf of a team mate, injuries to 3 top player. surprising but not shocking. Hanover beating Freeman was shocking the score. And Colonial Heights beating up Petersburg was surprising to me.

Phoebus and Varina winning tough rivalry games. Both showed poise and grit after facing some pressure. The Hanover victory over Freeman was big as well. Thought the Hawks were done. Sam Rogers will not let his young men quit.

What caught my eye is Spotsylvania (4-5) scoring 35 points on King George. 28 of them were in the first half and they scored in the 3rd quarter to make it 40-35 before King George pulled away. The got the win and that's what counts. Spotsylvania must have played a heck of a game to hang with them well into the 3rd quarter. King George is great offensively but are they good enough defensively to hang with Varina, Dinwiddie, and Huguenot?

Congratulations to Varina on their big win today.

4B will be very interesting.

Glass beating Heritage shocked pretty much everyone in the Lynchburg area. Glass's offense has been pretty bad this year, getting shut out twice in district play. Didn't look any better against Heritage but they did benefit from a 90+ yard kickoff return and then blocked a punt to set up a 4 yard TD drive. According to the paper, they only had like 105 yards of total offense. But their defense and special teams were enough to knock off Heritage, and keep them alive for a playoff spot in 4D.

They are not! If a team from the Battlefield makes it to the second round they better hope for a EV/KG rematch. If EV’s qb is done for the season Courtland has a legit chance of beating them.

and the JV won too; congrats Raptor fans

I do not think Amelia has enough warm bodies to play anymore this year.

Yeah, the way the notices read that I’ve seen, they have shut down for the season.
It will be interesting to see what the rules say if they still end up 8th. Is it a forfeit in the first round? Or does #9 move up to 8th. I know it’s pretty academic in this particular case, but it will be interesting to learn what the rules say.

Huh what happened there?

EV’s staff had no business playing Hull against KG a few weeks ago. No knee brace, had him scrambling, took quite a few big hits. RGIII 2.0 situation. Those guys leave a lot to be desired as a staff.

Them Varina Blue Devils and Huguenot Falcons took care of business against two teams with a combined 15-3. record. Going to be hard scoring on Varina’s defense thru the air and hard stopping that Huguenot offense. Wild that Huguenot has gone 9-0 and beat Manchester, Bird and Midlo in blowout fashion and Matoaca is considered the best team in the 804 by multiple outlets. Varina’s mistakes early on in the season, may have cost them a 1 seed. We wouldn’t be having any discussions had they beaten Indian River.

I watched Huguenot vs Eastern View on NFHS Network earlier this season as was impressed by Huguenot. It was a great first half as I recall and Huguenot pulled away in the second half. That's an indication of good halftime adjustments. I saw a little of Varina vs Atlee on NFHS Network a couple of weeks ago and Varina had a pretty easy time with an Atlee team that it seems will make the playoffs. I watched Dinwiddie vs North Stafford early in the season on NFHS and if they played again I wouldn't bet against Dinwiddie winning a rematch. 4B will be interesting. If a Battlefield team comes out on top it will be an upset I think but you never know what will happen come playoff time. KG and EV are explosive and can pop big plays but it's possible EV may not have their QB which is a shame. Courtland is the Battlefield team most likely to slow the game down and limit the offensive possessions since they are a strong running team and pass a little but not a lot. Not sure how effective they'll be against Huguenot, Dinwiddie and Varina but they are a different type of team.

One more week of regular season left and some spots and positions yet to be determined. Enjoy the last week and then the 4B playoffs will be fun to watch!! Have a good one!

Looking at both of their schedules up to this point neither one should be considered the best to me. We kill KG and Eastern View for supposedly weak schedules and its the same with these two teams. At least in Huguenots case they were just locked into a weak Dominion district this year. Matoaca's OOD schedule was terrible.

I think EV and KG played better schedules this season. Matoaca has coasted all year.

Huguenot did the best they could in a year 2 of a two year cycle. It sucks that that district only allows for 1-2 OOD games.

5C could be very interesting. Matoaca loss to Dinwiddie should lock Fleming in at home through the regional finals, could be a very good game between Fleming and whomever crawls out of round two from the 804.

Fleming better hope Midlo loses Friday because they don’t wanna play Louisa right now

Spotsylvania actually scored 42.

Crazy as it sounds, think Louisa and Fleming are the two most exciting teams in 5C. I don’t have a lot of faith in Matoaca. They outta be ashamed of themselves for that schedule they played (these studs been in their program all 4 years; definitely should’ve set a 2 year contract up to play Varina/Highland Springs/Maury/Phoebus). Playing Henrico and Ponax is CRAAAZY WORK. Bryce Yates definitely brings another element to that offense at QB. With the talent they have and schedule they’ve played, I’d like to have seen Maury and Hayfield numbers.

Agree , I watched them play Hopewell and Hopewell was going toe to toe with them until quarterback Tatum got hurt, it was 21 - 9 in the 3rd quarter and the sophomore quarterback for hopewell threw 3 interception and that sealed the game. 42-9. But Matoaca is talented but Maury is a beast and I don't think Matoaca or any other C5 team will beat them. Just my opinion from seeing them play.
