Why did 6-11 Dajour Dickens pick Providence and not UVa

Maybe he has a connection to former Kecoughtan high school coach Ivan Thomas?

Have not seen him play. Is he really 6-11?
How bad did UVa want him?
Is this a blow to UVa's basketball program? :)
Virginia has a long history of enabling skilled big men to leave the state for their college
basketball.

Yes he's really 6'11, but he's only 205-10 lbs. He went to Providence simply because of Ivan Thomas. Thomas will be getting more VA kids up there. Dickens isn't a program changer and will not be a blow to UVa's basketball program.

He has to be better than Jack Salt, doesn't he?! :)
13 rebounds-a-game is pretty good. Sometimes a big man doesn't score a lot because everyone else on his team is jacking up shots as soon as they touch the ball. I remember Mark West as an example, if anyone remembers him. :)

Mark became a monster in high school. He had a developed inside game at 16 years old and was a fierce rebounder and shot blocker. I remember him playing on Channel 8 in Petersburg in the Central Region Tournament in 1977 thru 1979. Mark was a man as a sophomore.

6'11" center Dajour Dickens has his team in the state championship game. It's not 6A, but 5A isn't bad. He had 18 points and 18 rebounds in the state semi-finals. His team is 24-5. Are you sure he couldn't have helped UVa?
Yep. I seen him play for 4 years. He is getting better. Big step from Bethel to ACC. Not sure how he will do at Providence. He needs to remember he is 6'11', not 6'2".

If you are 6"11 playing public high school you should be dominating. If you are not then That is a problem. He looks athletic though maybe he will be a late bloomer

I wonder why athletes in every sport pick certain schools over others.

Best example, is why would any good football player pick UVA over VT ?

Good football players don't pick UVa over Virginia Tech. That's why Tech has won the last 13 games against UVa, and 17 of the last 18! And almost all of them have been routs. I don't know of a single good player on UVa's roster who picked Virginia over Virginia Tech. I'm talking about guys who are the REAL THING: I don't think Andrew Brown or Quin Blanding would even be starting at Tech. I attended both UVa and Tech, by the way. :)

Tech gets good VA players, but I am not overally impressed with their product on the field the last few years. Need to give new coach a chance and see what happens over a 4 year span and he works his recruiting class thru a cycle. Most of the top VA kids leaving the state so Tech does not have it on lockdown anymore.

I'm kind of middle of the road on liking VT. But, after that amazing "come from WAY back" win in the Belk Bowl last season, you just have to be impressed. Results like that can't do anything but attract attention to the program. If that win wasn't a fluke, and I don't believe for a minute it was, then Tech could be on the verge of becoming a major player again. (Which gets you more of those game changing kids).

I want to root for UVA, but damn they make it hard. Are you sure we can't get George Welch to come out of retirement?

George Welsh is now 83, and in the college football hall of fame as a coach. Before he came to UVa, the school had had 2 winning seasons in the previous 29 years. Under George, UVa had 13 straight seasons in which they won 7 games or more. George Welsh had the fans spoiled. He went 6-6 his last year, and retired. These days, 6-6 would be cause for a parade and a state holiday!

If UVA ever wins 6 games again to qualify for a bowl game, I hope I am out of the state that Saturday. I am not sure I can take all the stuff that will take place. Their fans will storm the field, tear down goal posts, riot in the streets, etc.

I hear you. They did not fully appreciate Welsh and the job he did back then. Now they see the light.
