I have not heard the usual chatter from Bird faithful this year about how all the talent coming back next year. I think the team is senior heavy and I'm not sure how good their j.v. team was this year. Will 2017 be the year the Skyhawks finally lose more than a couple of games?

Highland Springs' 9th grade team played Bird's 9th grade team Thursday. HS won that one 36-0

Maxpreps shows that their jv was 6-2.

HS jv was 10-0

There's a big arms race south of the james with Man, Mon, Bird, Meadowbrook, Dale etc all trying to get to the next level.

Down for Bird? probably... but will still be pretty good I would think.

I think they will be down based on typical Bird standards but I don't expect them to be 5-5 or anything like that. I haven't seen their schedule yet but I can't imagine they would lose more than 3 reg season games at the most no matter what. They may get a few transfers in too who knows. Definitely some open competition for positions on next years team.

Manchester, Mon & Dale are probably the only schools that they play every year that could give them trouble. Man has gotten the best of them lately. Dale and Mon have gotten crushed the last few years but it still isn't undo-able. Mon hasn't beaten Bird since 1998 but will have Syour Fludd in his SR year against what probably will be a lighter Bird team. I'm not ready to say JR and Cosby can challenge Bird and the rest of Dom district will still get dominated.

There is a major arms race right now in south richmond between Man, Mon, Meadowbrook, Bird. All of these schools are very close proximity to each other. A few miles down the rd and Dale & Dinwiddie are gonna be good for a while as well.

Bird had a pretty good JV team. Its hard to judge off JV sometimes bc for example Monacan has 16 Sophmores on Varsity.. so our JV team isn't that good.

I will agree that a team like Highland Springs that has an awesome varsity team already and still has enough left over to field an excellent JV and Fresh team says something special. I think HS probably does have the most talented pool to pull from. It was nice to see them get over that hurdle last year bc I feel like they should have gotten over that hurdle a couple of times before.

A 7-3 Bird team would be huge news. They haven't lost 3 in the regular season since 1998 when they were 6-4.

Full list of sub 8-2 regular seasons (school opened in 1978)

1996 7-3
1978 5-3
1998 6-4
1989 5-5
1988 4-6 (yes Bird had a losing record over the two years from 1988-1989...inconceivable!)
1981 3-7

So they've been 8-2 or better in 33 of 39 seasons. So 7-3 would definitely be down for the team.

I meant absolute worst scenario they would be 7-3... I think 8-2 would be more realistic or a 9-1 with less lopsided games would be probably closer to reality. Speaks volumes that the fact that they had a few contested games would be considered a down year but your right!

@GilliamRatings what is your prediction?

I honestly don't know, but from the "lack of chatter" I'm hearing from the Bird people, I actually think a 7-3 or even 6-4 year could be possible. I hope I'm wrong. I enjoy following my old stomping ground, but I've just got this feeling...

I should point out, that I've thought this before and watched 'em go 10-0. They seem to always get it done, even in years when they don't have talent all over the field.

I think it depends on their out of district schedule. They lose 15 seniors and a few stud defensive players. Their big back graduates, but Bird always has running backs waiting in the wings. When I reviewed their roster 22 juniors popped up and I don't expect much drop off. The Skyhawk coaching staff will have the boys ready and as usual they will take on all comers. I will not be surprised if they finish the regular season with 1 loss.
