The Green Hornets now have first place all to themselves following a big win tonight at Riverheads, helped along by a Fort Defiance win over Staunton. The story tonight was a quick start for the visitors, which put RHS in a deep first half hole. To their credit the Gladiators fought back in the second half and in fact in the third quarter alone, they cut their 21-point halftime deficit all the way down to 11 before Wilson regained control and coasted to the win.

Finn Irving led the scoring for the Hornets with a 21 point night, followed by Jaziel Mensah, their transfer from Class 5 Harrisonburg, with 19 points. That duo, along with another solid effort from the coach's son, Jaxson Hartman, was just too much for Riverheads to overcome.

The Big Red however did have one bright spot on the evening, a 13-point effort from sophomore Bennett Dunlap. He became the fifth Gladiator this season to have a double-figure game, but don't worry, in just a few short weeks out on the football field, he will show us some REAL double-figure scoring! The Gladiators were led tonight by Ryan Farris with 14 and D'ante Gray with 11, as team leader Adam Painter was held to only 7 by the Wilson defense.

In JV action, Riverheads throttled the Baby Hornets 50-24 behind 14 points from Carter Mooneyham. The Big Red Juniors are now 2-3 after starting the season with three losses.

Next up for RHS is a trip to Staunton on Tuesday to battle the Storm. In their first tussle in Greenville on opening night, things went right down to the wire before Staunton escaped with a 50-47 win, so things could be interesting Tuesday, especially considering that the Gladiators have performed well in Paul Hatcher the past two or three seasons.

Wilson meanwhile travels to Waynesboro on Monday seeking a repeat of their earlier 25-point rout over the Little Giants. However things might be different this time around, since Waynesboro tasted victory tonight for the first time with a win over Rockbridge, and that should have them fired up for their neighborhood rivals.

The JV matchup was actually a rematch from Thursday night as Waynesboro JV stepped in and replaced Wilson JV (quarantine). They just didn’t change the opponent’s name for the NFHS livestream.

Well that explains one thing!!! I kept hearing the refs say "blue" when a ball went out of bounds. But of course Wilson's colors are green. So that had me puzzled.

But that was an interesting idea. I guess it has gotten to the point where high schools have to do whatever they can to get games in, just like colleges.

Thanks for the clarification.
