Of all the schools that have played within the Richmond/Central Region since 1970, there have been just 12 schools that avoided a winless season. 9 of those schools are within Class 5:

  1. Deep Run
  2. Douglas Freeman
  3. Highland Springs
  4. LC Bird
  5. Lee-Davis
  6. Glen Allen
  7. Matoaca
  8. Meadowbrook
  9. Mills Godwin
Interesting note here is that 4 of these schools did not even exist in 1970 so 5 of these schools have managed to have at least one win every year since... Those 5 are: Douglas Freeman, Highland Springs, Lee-Davis, Matoaca and Meadowbrook.

LC Bird opened in 1978
Mills Godwin opened in 1981
Deep Run opened in 2003
Glen Allen opened in 2011

I'd love to each school's 6 worst seasons and their combined record for the 6 seasons. I doubt anyone holds a candle to this:

L.C. Bird

1981 3-7
1988 4-6
1989 5-5
1998 6-4
1978 5-3
1996 7-4

combined: 30-29

You would be correct, LC Bird is by far better than the rest even at their worst.

Highland Springs six worst seasons since 1970 combined for 23-7
  • 3-7 in 1971 and 1983
  • 4-6 in 1970, 1986 and 1998
  • 5-5 in multiple seasons.
Mills Godwin's six worst seasons since they opened in 1981 combined for 18-41
  • 2-8 in 1991
  • 2-7 in 1981
  • 3-7 in 1995 and 2008
  • 4-6 in 1993 and 2015

Deep Run's six worst seasons since they opened in 2003 combined for 17-43
  • 1-9 in 2003 and 2014
  • 2-8 in 2015
  • 3-7 in 2013
  • 5-5 in 2011 and 2009
Douglas Freeman's six worst seasons since 1970 combined for 12-46-1
  • 1-9 in 1982
  • 2-8 in 1989 and 2009
  • 2-7 in 2001
  • 2-7-1 in 1984
  • 3-7 in 2011
Lee-Davis' six worst seasons since 1970 combined for 12-46-2
  • 1-9 in 2005
  • 2-8 in 1979, 2007 and 2014
  • 2-7-1 in 1980
  • 3-6-1 in 1985
Matoaca's six worst seasons since 1970 combined for 12-47-1
  • 1-9 in 1985 and 1987
  • 2-8 in 1984 and 1986
  • 3-7 in 2010
  • 3-6-1 in 1974
Glen Allen's six worst seasons since they opened in 2011 combined for 12-49
  • 1-9 in 2011, 2014 and 2015
  • 2-8 in 2012
  • 3-7 in 2016
  • 4-7 in 2013
Meadowbrook's six worst seasons since 1970 combined for 7-53
  • 1-9 in 1978, 1979, 1982, 1997 and 1999
  • 2-8 in 2000

That's pretty interesting stuff. Any chance you can calculate the same for just the Central District?

Yes sir.

Are old statewide records available on a web site somewhere? Pre-1999. Back into the 70's and before?

I don't believe so. I hope to someday have my vast collection available online for all to enjoy but it only encompasses what was the Central Region and what I now call the Richmond Region.

Interesting that virtually all of them are pre 2000, with the exception of CH. And hopefully with Coach Edwards at the helm, and a new commitment by the CH community, the worst years are behind them.

Is it safe to assume that comprehensive, (old), records are not in the VHSL archives?

And, thank you.

Records might be but I know such things as game results and VHSL ratings are not. From conversations in the past with a friend I've made at the VHSL, a lot of that old data was tossed years ago. History is sometimes tossed aside before it has a chance to be appreciated.

Most of the time it's hard for us to appreciate how important the "here and now" will be in the future.

If you ever discover any records about Cape Charles High School, on the Eastern Shore, please let me know. An old friend of mine that played on some of the first Dinwiddie teams in the mid-60's told me about going over there and playing a game. Cape Charles only had enough players to field a team, (14 he thinks), so the Dinwiddie boys thought they would finally "whip up" on somebody. He remembers they got beat something like 54-0. Another player's wife that was a cheerleader at that game told me they cheered every time Cape Charles scored because they didn't know any different!

I did read a little about Cape Charles football from way back then recently. It was by a player that eventually became a Cardiologist and a very respected part of the "shore" community. Dr. Lloyd Kellam. They got him to make an oral recording of his memories. He told about the team piling into a workboat and riding across the Bay to play Mathews County. I think he said they traveled that way because the school couldn't afford to transport them.

I went inside the long closed Cape Charles High School back in the 90's. There were still assignments written on a couple of chalk boards in some classrooms. I think the school closed in 1970. Incidently, the building was sold a few years ago and is now apartments. Cape Charles Lofts.

One last thing about Cape Charles. The original Cape Charles School, c1893, still exist. A retired guy bought it in the 90's and restored it from the ground up as his private residence. We bumped into him one day somewhere, and started carring on a bunch of mess with him. We asked if he would give us a tour. He said the fee was a case of beer, but he would trust us to return with the beer later. We spent hours looking the place over, and talking. We went back a few days later. We had had such a good time we decided to double the admission fee, and took him two cases of beer. Of course, we stayed long enough to help him consume most of it.

We are relatively certain the same fate occurred with the old athletic records at Dinwiddie. Somebody decided to clean up and tossed everything years ago.

I've seen scores of games going back to the early 1900's and some are wild... Also, many of the teams of the early 1900's were small.

I was wondering the other day when I asked about Booker T Washington, what is the oldest Richmond Region high school still operating from its original location? Meadowbrook has been where it is for about 50 years or more, I think. But I don't know if that was the first Meadowbrook HS.

Yeah, I like looking at the VHSL record book.

Kingsport, TN beat Norton 193-0 in 1925!

I would think Thomas Jefferson, 1929

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case at just about every school. At some point, somebody just tosses the records out. I feel like part of an ADs job should be keeping school records. I'd try and keep copies of scoresheets and stats sheets of every game we ever had if I were starting out as AD at a new school.

I agree 100%. But I know to some history/stats/records don't mean as much so I guess it's different for each school, coach, AD.
