Softball: New Kent 2 King William 1

Well played game, that will only help both teams as the postseason begins. UVA commit Hannah Tober hit a 2 run single in the bottom of the 3rd and that was all the runs the Trojans needed. JMU signee Taylor Johnson lead KW with 9Ks and 3B Jillian Smith hit a HR for KW. KW now plays the regional quarterfinals, which I'm now seeing will be on Wednesday, to avoid the possibility of rain on Thursday. KW looks to advance out of a very tough Region A and return to the state tournament, while New Kent will be in the mix in Class 3.

Prince William County Senior Showcase Prospects

****** Keep Checking for Updates *********

Brentsville cornerback Tyler Owens (5-foot-10, 180) had seven interceptions as a junior while being selected 1st All-Region defensive back and 1st team All-Region at receiver. At the showcase he shutdown most every receiver and looks like a D1 prospects. He was one of the best prospects on the field.

Potomac athlete Alphonso Evans (5-foot-8, 160) was an All-District running back but I felt he did his best as a cornerback during the one-on-one drills. He was aggressive with his coverage, reacted well to the receivers direction and even picked off a pass.

Garfield receiver Germaine Gillion (6-foot-0, 170) had several inquiries after the field drills and he has an offer from Maine. He was one of the better-looking receivers and he had a couple of explosive catches. Gillion was an All-District Punt Returner and displayed versatility with four interceptions and five total touchdowns including two punt returns for scores. He caught 12 passes for 145 yards.

Offensive lineman Jack Smoot (6-foot-4, 280) had a lot of college interests after the one-on-one workouts at the Prince William County Senior Showcase. Smoot has offers from North Carolina A&T, Morgan State and Hampton. A strong college camp showing should increase his exposure to D1 schools.

The 1st prospect wrote down even before talking to the high school coaches was Forest Park rising senior Elijah Foster (6-foot-5, 280) who plays offensive guard. Stevenson University offered Battlefield rising seniors Samuel Egharevba (6-foot-4, 270) and Emmanuel Ackom-Daafo (6-foot-4, 250). Egharevba plays offensive tackle while Ackom-Daafo starts at defensive end.

There were a couple of talented quarterbacks who appear to be nearing offers. Patriot quarterback Tyler Knutson threw for 1341 yards with 16 touchdowns for the Pioneers as a junior. He has great size (6-foot-4) but is still awaiting his 1st D1 offer Gainesville quarterback. Colton Kilmer was very productive as a junior passing for 2580 passing yards with 33 touchdowns. He added 703 rushing yards and has an offer from wheeling University.

Caroline County Football

Would someone care to shed some light on why Caroline is such a revolving door for their head football coach? I think with Coach Johnson moving on, this is the 7th or 8th time since 2010 that they will have a new head coach. Some localities struggle to keep a head coach for obvious reasons. But most of those reasons don’t seem relevant for Caroline. I’m just curious if someone in the know can tell me if there is something in common that leads to the rapid turnover?

Dawkins played at Atlantic Shores and a three-time all state pick before playing at Duke. He also played in the G-Leauge and overseas before coaching at a high school in Oklahoma City. I'm pretty sure his wife got a job at UVA.

Riverheads Run Rules Staunton 17-3

The Big Red Machine has been consistent this season in a rather unusual way. For the fifth time this season, they traveled to face a Shenandoah District team on its own field and came away with an impressive lopsided win. Tonight the victim was the Staunton Storm and if you tally up those five wins (the others being over Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance, Stuarts Draft, and Waynesboro) the final run total comes out to an astonishing 76 for Riverheads to only 8 for those five opponents, with two of them being shutouts. Only Wilson was able to keep the Big Red from producing a win on the road in district play.

Conversely, each one of those five teams that Riverheads routed on its own field gave the Gladiators a better game when they played in Greenville. In the case of Waynesboro, they even won on the Gladiator diamond. So for whatever reason, the Gladiators have loved their road trips this season, so it will be interesting to see how the playoffs unfold, since RHS is now off until Memorial Day, when the Region 2-B playoffs will begin. At this stage, we do not yet know who the Big Red's quarterfinal opponent will be.

To look at tonight's score, one might assume that the Gladiators swung some heavy aluminum. Of course they had some hits, but tonight's runaway victory was also caused in large part by some erratic pitching and fielding on the part of the home team. I don't have exact stats on any of this, but I would guess that at least five or six of the Gladiators runs were scored directly on wild pitches, walks, or hit batters. Sure they drove some home the old-fashioned way, but Staunton was its own worst enemy at times tonight.

In one particularly strange sequence, Brody Phillips led off the fifth inning with a walk. He immediately tried to steal second but the throw from the catcher ricocheted away, allowing him to try for third. The Storm tried to throw him out there but the ball sailed over the fence, and the umpire awarded him home, so instead of stealing just one routine base, he ended up with three free ones.

The Gladiators scored in each of their five at-bats, with four runs in the first, three in the second, then two and one to take a 10-1 lead into the home half of the fourth. They had obviously been solid on defense up to that point, with Levi Dunlap and then Logan Austin having little trouble with the Storm hitters.

Just when it looked like RHS would be headed for run-rule territory, they lost a little of their concentration in the infield and committed a pair of fielding errors themselves, which allowed Staunton to close within 10-3 after four innings. At that point, the game was already close to two hours in length, and no one really wanted it to go the full seven frames.

So Phillips pulled off his little trick to give RHS run number 11, which opened the floodgates and they scored six more in the top of the fifth before Staunton could stop the bleeding. The game then ended in the bottom of the fifth with one of the more unusual double plays you will ever see.

Staunton had a guy on first with one out. The next batter hit a very deep fly to right field. The RHS fielder hauled it in just short of the fence for out number two. However, everyone soon realized that the runner who had been at first was now standing on third.

He had taken off on the crack of the bat, most likely assuming that the ball was going to land safely or perhaps he thought there were already two outs and that he had nothing to lose. Whatever he was thinking, his failure to wait and tag up constituted the final out and that double play, if the term fits, ended the game somewhat abruptly.

So it was not a successful Senior Night for Staunton's very small Senior Class, meaning that bigger things are likely ahead for The Storm. Riverheads meanwhile finishes a respectable 9-3 in district play and between now and Memorial Day they will discuss how to bring the same killer instinct to their home field that they have been showing on the road, since all indications are that they will get to host that regional quarterfinal.

Lynchburg Area Football

Went to the Lynchburg 7 v 7 at Heritage Monday, and stayed for as long as my allergies would allow me.
Teams in attendance were:
Heritage
LCA
Altavista
Appomattox
Rustburg
JF

Its always good to see how much these guys grow from year to year. I was impressed by Altavista's size, for a Class 1 team, the brought a good amount of guys to the event and held their own. LCA with their experience looks the part as well. They didn't have Gideon for the first few sessions, but they were still able to convert on some plays, once Gideon stepped on the field, it was game over. From what I seem Heritage is back, they had some of their bigs dressed out as well, and they've got some size. The last time heritage has had this kind of size was back in the Lala days. They've got a good group of receivers as always and I expect Slash to make some more noise after having a good sophomore campaign. Defense looks like they will have a good back 7. Heirtage got a blessing back in Brayden Morgan at outside linebacker. He was there his freshman year, then spent 2 seasons at Glass where he was a turnover creating machine, especially on special teams. Look for him to help in the running game as well. JF also looks like they will compete again this year. They will have a new QB. Appomattox looks like they will be young, but still in that Dogwood conversation. Rustburg looking good as well. Got some pretty good corners and are working with a new quarterback.

Any thoughts on the Lynchburg area?

Battle at the Beach - Prospects

*** Check back for continuous Updates ***

Warwick athlete Keon Batts is a playmaker who provides a spark on offense and defense. Batts made tough catches in the slot while batting down balls on defense. Batts comes in a smaller frame but he uses his speed to his advantage.

Rising senior Messiah Delhomme was one of the top players I watched in the morning session. He played amazing coverage from the safety spot covering sideline to sideline. Twice I saw him run from the middle of the field to make an interception in the corner endzone.

Saint Michael defensive end Joshua Jackson (6-foot-3, 235) showed his versatility as he was one of a handful of players that participated in the Big Man camp as an edge rusher and the 7-on-7 drills as a linebacker. He won reps attacking the tackling pylon and he defended the middle of the field during passing drills. Jackson has offers from Campbell University and Grinnell College.

Remington Moss is a Wisconsin commit and a Rivals 3-star recruit. Not sure why he is under the radar but I feel he is one of the best players in the state. Maybe it was his early commitment that kept him off the recruiting headlines but he plays at a high level and he is a leader in the defensive backfield.

Rising senior Eamon Cuffee won the MVP for Granby after helping the Comets to the championship game. Cuffee not only scored touchdowns during the 7-on-7; he was the emotional leader. Cuffee was selected All-Tidewater defensive back and All-State at receiver. He made nine interceptions on defense and grabbed 43 catches for 885 yards and seven touchdowns.

Lake Taylor had two prospects that stood out at the Battle at the Beach. Rising senior Jerome Brown Jr (6-foot-2, 195) was the Titans most athletic player. He had two touchdowns playing tight end. However, it is on the defensive end that Brown shines. He was a 1st Team All-State performer at linebacker after being credited with close to 150 tackles. Brown says he has interest from Maryland, Norfolk State, James Madison, North Carolina A & T, and Virginia.

Rising senior Darian McKenzie (5-foot-9, 185) He show good hands during his routes. He was 2nd team All-Region running back for the Titans. He had 985 rushing yards with 325 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns.

Rising senior Drevyon Tharrington also had a big day on both offense and defense for the Comets. During his junior year, Tharrington was 2nd team All-Region at running back. He gained 836 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns while adding six receptions and two scores out of the backfield. Tharrington played well defensively during the 7-on-7.

Churchland rising senior Jekai Lee (6-foot-6, 200) has the look of a prospect who will develop into a college player. Lee has a knack for stripping the ball and deflecting passes using his wingspan to knock the ball away. He played both linebacker and defensive end but he seems like a natural edge rusher. He participated in the Big-Man competition at the Battle for the Beach 7-on-7 tournament.

The top cover prospect for Indian River was rising senior Trey Voskanyan (5-foot-11,173) who manned the deep routes from his safety position. Last year Voskanyan finished with six interceptions including two he returned for touchdown. He added 28 tackles and 11 pass breakups. He was selected 1st team All-Region while helping Indian River reach the State semi-finals. He has Interest from North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, New Hampshire and East Carolina.

Sophomore Jason Preston had a couple of touchdowns and interceptions throughout the 7-on-7 tournament and was one of Indian Rivers best players. As a sophomore, Preston had 35 receptions including a 70-yard touchdown.

Gladiators Post Second Shutout Over Bison

As expected, we didn't see anywhere near the massacre we witnessed at Buffalo Gap earlier this season, but once again Riverheads only needed five innings to roll past the Bison 10-0. Adding the two scores together, the Big Red outscored their county rivals 32-0 this year, and although my stats are unofficial, I believe that tonight's starting (winning) pitcher, Ethan Fitzgerald, tossed a no-hitter. If so, that would be a nice complement to Brody Phillips' perfect game the first time the teams met.

There was one play tonight that could have been ruled a hit but I think the official call was an error and If so, Fitzgerald may have indeed gotten the no-fer. On another play, the Gap was robbed of a hit when second baseman Levi Dunlap hustled back onto the grass in short right field and hauled in a circus catch to deny the Bison batter on that occasion.

Meanwhile Riverheads scored all they would need in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Bison starter Kasey Fitzgerald struck out the next batter, but walked the next two to give RHS its first two runs. They would score one more that inning and added single tallies in the second and third to grab an early 5-0 advantage. After a scoreless fourth inning, RHS loaded the sacks again to begin the fifth, and ultimately doubled the score against the fourth Bison hurler of the game to accomplish the run-rule victory.

To Buffalo Gap's credit, their fielding was more efficient tonight as they had literally booted, bobbled, and tossed the ball all over the field in the first encounter. So there was definite improvement but the Gladiators just got the key hits they needed tonight to get the job done.

Riverheads will now wrap up the regular season Wednesday, weather-permitting, when they travel to Staunton. The forecast looks iffy to say the least, but if that one should be rained out, my understanding is that there is plenty of time left before regional play begins to make up any and all needed games. Speaking of regionals, my sources tell me that the Gladiators will be on solid ground to host a Region 2-B first round game, but apparently that will not be until Memorial Day or thereabouts.

While the Big Red boys were taking care of business tonight, the much more competitive game was happening next door. The Lady Gladiators took an early 5-2 lead and were still ahead 5-4 entering the seventh. But the Lady Bison uncorked a three-run homer as part of a never-ending final at-bat, as they stormed back for an 8-5 victory.

That win avenged an earlier home loss to the Big Red and if memory serves, that game followed almost the same script as tonight's. Word in the stands is that both teams are solidly in their playoffs. Riverheads had been on a tear prior to tonight, and should therefore be secure, whereas the Lady Bison may be in contention for the number one seed in Region 1-B but that of course is unofficial.

Anyway, it was a nice evening for Senior Night with the boys celebrating successfully but the girls falling short. Speaking of those seniors, best wishes for Saturday's upcoming graduation ceremonies and for that matter, best of luck to ALL the area graduates.
