Covid continues to be a pain in the neck on the week where the NFL kicks off. Different areas and school districts address covid differently when there is a case. Unfortunately, a few contests won't occur including the big one between King William and Essex for now. Be as safe as possible and hopefully we can trend downward again.

Last week, Northampton rebounded big versus 40-0 over Mathews, Northumberland has yet to allow a point this season winning 44-0, and Brunswick blanked Bluestone 46-0 in the biggest shutouts. Altavista shut out Prince Edward 37-0. Also, Essex beat Jamestown 17-0. The biggest shutout was by the defending champs Riverheads, 49-0 over Parry McCluer.

This week we expect more competitive games with several evenly matched squads doing battle.

FEATURED CONTEST:

RIVERHEADS (2-0) at LORD BOTETOURT (1-1)

The wait is over as Riverheads is facing the squad that is expected to give them a test. The Gladiators have had a few close battles with Stuarts Draft. Not many others have been able to slow the rushing attack of Riverheads. A little of the anticipation spark left when Lord Botetourt suffered an opening loss to E.C. Glass 41-30 but got their rhythm back defensively versus Blacksburg. Now the challenge of slowing down the Gladiators powerful attack led by Cayden Cook-Cash (6 foot 4, 205 pounds) who can hurt you in many different ways including on special teams and receiving passes. Bennett Dunlap (6 foot 1, 170 pounds) has been very accurate and showed being to have several big play opportunities off play action.

BOTTOMLINE: The Cavaliers will have to get production from their passing game and they must win the line of scrimmage to have a chance late. Expect Aiden Miller to be the x-factor and get lost amongst the big bodies.

PREDICTION: Riverheads 42 Lord Botetourt 28
