HARRISONBURG – They may not have ended their season on the note they had planned, but several Harrisonburg High School football players were recognized for their success when the All-Region II team was released Monday.

The Valley District champion Blue Streaks – who lost to Louisa County 28-9 in the Region II title game last week – placed six players on the team, with senior center Andrew McCulloch and junior linebacker Ronnell Brandon earning first-team honors.

"In some ways, when you get to the playoffs and have a season like we had – undefeated [in the regular-season] – it’s a great feeling," HHS coach Tim Sarver said Monday. "Right now, I think we’re all a little down because we know we could have played a little bit better down there at Louisa, but the kids will get over it, they’ll rebound. … I think in another week or so all of them will realize that they had a very successful season."

Earning second team honors for the Streaks were senior guard Freddy Valencia, senior quarterback Ben Sarver, and running back Alex Owah. Owah, who led the Valley District in rushing this season, was the only sophomore to make the Region II squad. Senior defensive end Tony Estela was named to the second-team defense.

Turner Ashby senior Carl McIntyre was a two-way first team selection, earning the honors at offensive tackle and defensive line.

Broadway senior lineman Allen Burkett earned second team honors on both lines.

Louisa senior running back Todd Shelton – who ran for 268 yards against HHS – was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Louisa linebacker Eric Church was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Louisa’s Mark Fischer and Rockbridge County’s Jason White were named Division 4 and Division 3 Coaches of the Year, respectively.

Region II is Group AA’s largest with 32 schools, and that depth was on display as players from 18 different schools earned all-region honors.

Comprising the first team offensive line were McCulloch, Sherando’s Joey Christine, Louisa’s Kyree Tolliver and Davell Smith and McIntyre.

At tight end is R.E. Lee senior Roane Babington, with Rockbridge junior Jeff Early and Broad Run senior Adrian Mines the receivers.

Handley junior J.J. Dorsey got the nod at quarterback and is joined in the backfield by Shelton, Park View senior Derek Dudinski and Monticello junior Takeem Hedgeman. Church is the kicker, with Broad Run’s Clayton Abel the return specialist.

The first-team defensive ends are Babington and Liberty senior Devaughn Parson, with McIntyre, Christine, and Potomac Falls senior Blaise Ruffin manning the down lineman spots.

At linebacker are Brandon, Church, Park View senior Amechi Anyaugo and Rockbridge senior Patrick Bannon, the Valley District Defensive Player of the Year.

In the secondary are Dudinski, Louisa senior Terrell Wells, Monticello senior Michael Brown, and Liberty junior Sam Ball-Whitfield. Liberty senior Andy Smith is the punter.
