What a wild week of football… Games moved up a day, some moved back to Monday as well as Tuesday and a couple still played on Friday while we all tried to stay indoors and wonder if an ark was going to be needed. When the clouds and rain clear however, we find ourselves staring at the second half of the season. As we enter the second half, let’s take a look back at this past week and where we’ve been.

GAME OF THE WEEK

LC Bird 36-6 over Monacan
These two were the last two region teams playing last season, Bird of course played one week longer. Last night, those two teams clashed and it was Bird who was still standing as many expected. Early in this one it looked as if the two were equally ready for battle as both defenses played exceptionally and the Skyhawks held a 3-0 lead after one quarter of play. One defense continued the exceptional play, the other did not. The Skyhawks defense six games into the season have allowed just one offensive touchdown… I didn’t stutter, one. After falling behind 15-0 the Chiefs scored a touchdown in the third quarter, that touchdown however did not come on offense but rather defense when TJ Jones returned a fumble 38 yards for a score. That would be the closest the Chiefs would come to Bird the remainder of the night. The Skyhawks defense clamped down pressuring quarterback Patrick Roustis who played for another week with Syour Fludd still on the sidelines with an injury. When the defense wasn’t pressuring the quarterback, they were going after Khalik Hamlin who was held in check for 29 yards! More mind blowing than that is the fact that the Skyhawks held the Chiefs to minus 31 yards! That speaks to just how good this Skyhawks defense is.

The first two Skyhawks touchdowns came through the air from Jalen Elliott on touchdown passes of 24 and 5 yards each. JB Wright tore up the field yet again running the ball but scored just once on the ground however he did score on defense with a 5-yard fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. In fact both Wright touchdowns came in the fourth quarter as the Skyhawks put to rest the Chiefs who had gotten the game with 9 points but no closer. You can read more about this game here https://virginiapreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1809523

At the halfway point of the season the Skyhawks are 6-0 and looking scary good! They are looking just as everyone was saying before the season began, a favorite to win yet another state title. Bird should have smooth sailing to the playoffs having already played Manchester, Thomas Dale and now Monacan. Monacan however up till this game has had a favorable schedule to get to 5-0 but now they are 5-1 and they still have Manchester. You have to look at this one for Monacan just as you do Thomas Dale, the Knights are a better team than they looked against Bird and the same can be applied to Monacan.

SURPRISE OF THE WEEK
Matoaca 32-22 over Dinwiddie
I myself thought Matoaca would give the Generals a game but this outcome I did not honestly expect. The Warriors and Generals traded shots in the first half as Jamison Harrison scored first and it proved to be quite a night for him running the ball. The Warriors lost the lead for a time in the second quarter after the Generals had taken the lead with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown but Matoaca responded with a touchdown to tie it up at halftime. In the second half it was all Matoaca as the Warriors got two safeties on the Generals! That’s a rarity to say the least in a football game, I cannot recall a game myself where there were two safeties. The Warriors tacked on two more touchdowns as the Generals defense had no answer for the offense of Matoaca. Looking at this game, it’s amazing to think that Matoaca is 4-1 and granted they still have Thomas Dale, Hopewell and Meadowbrook to face but the Warriors are clearly a resurgent program under first year Coach Derrick Johnson and he appears to have the Warriors on a path back to the playoffs.

ROUND THE REGION
Douglas Freeman 35-7 over Thomas Jefferson
The Rebels believe it or not are now 5-0! The Rebels continue to win and Trey Laughlin shined yet again as he threw four touchdowns as the Rebels were just too much for TJ. The Vikings responded in the second quarter down 14-0 when Tre’shawn Winston scored on a 4-yard run after the Vikings moved down the field. In fact, at halftime the Rebels only led 14-7 but the second half was all Rebels and now they are in fact 5-0 while Thomas Jefferson is now 1-5. The Rebels second half to the season is favorable but they must still face Hermitage and this Rebels team while good will have their hands full. TJ is now 1-5, four games to get one or two more wins to solidify a playoff spot but the schedule is not on their side and the Vikings will need help to get it done.

Meadowbrook 40-0 over Colonial Heights
This is just what Meadowbrook does… They have a tough schedule, they lose their out-of-district contests, face questions about the program falling off and they enter district play and start winning. The Monarchs won their second game of the season with a run game that saw three different players score touchdowns on the ground with Jace Miller scoring twice on his way to nearly 200 yards on the ground(182). The Colonials run game was unable to find the success it has at times and the defense could not seem to stop the Monarchs. Meadowbrook is now 2-3 and creeping back into the playoff conversation whereas Colonial Heights is also 2-3 but wins won’t be easy in the Central District so finding a win will be crucial but not easy when you still have Dinwiddie, Matoaca and Hopewell still looming.

Lee-Davis 42-0 over Armstrong
In the last two weeks Armstrong has been outscored 0-113 and have now suffered their third straight loss while Lee-Davis is basking in the flow of a 5-0 start to the season. The Confederates got exactly what they have become accustomed to this season from their offense as Nathan Evans scored three touchdowns on the ground including the first two scores of the night as he totaled 122 yards on a soggy ground. Mummau had 119 yards passing in the rain but had just one touchdown to show for. The Confederates have had a rather favorable schedule but looking ahead, the Confederates meat and potatoes of their schedule begin this coming week with Atlee. Lee-Davis still has Highland Springs, Hanover and Patrick Henry looming so in the second half, we will clearly see what Lee-Davis is made of. For Armstrong, their playoff hopes are fading with each loss and will face an uphill battle in the second half.

JR Tucker 42-0 over Deep Run
Last week the Tigers gave up 42, this way they were the ones putting up 42, on Deep Run. The Tigers got a huge game from Taj Conway who amassed 164 yards and five touchdowns. on a soggy field Thursday night. The Wildcats had no answer for Conway or the Tigers scoring as Deep Run would never get on the board and were down 35-0 at the half! That’s right, Conway did all his scoring in the first half. The Tigers got their first win of the season while dealing Deep Run another loss as both are now 1-4. With what Tucker showed last night, the Tigers could snag another win or two in the second half of the season as can Deep Run but clearly Tucker looks to be in better shape after this one.

Cosby 24-12 over Clover Hill
The Titans got their second win in a row while keeping rival Clover Hill winless. Trevor Laury got the Titans on the board in the first quarter on two touchdowns runs of 10 and 15 yards on his way to over a 100 yards on the ground(122). The Titans tacked on another touchdown before Clover Hill would respond but the Cavaliers didn’t have enough to mount any kind of comeback or stay with the Titans for that matter as the Titans tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter. With the win, the Titans are now 2-3 and back in the playoff conversation but Cosby’s second half schedule won’t be easy with Manchester and Bird both still on the schedule. Clover Hill won’t go winless but another losing season seems almost inevitable for the Cavs.

Mills Godwin 34-14 over Glen Allen
The Eagles are now the winners of two straight and for Glen Allen, a long season is getting longer and longer. This game was actually tied for a short time in the first quarter after the Jaguars scored on a kickoff return after Godwin had gotten on the board. Godwin would then go on to score three touchdowns before Glen Allen got back on the board and it was not all by Wesley Dugger this go around as Will Abbott had a game he won’t soon forget throwing two touchdowns and rushing for two as well. The Eagles got a big game from the offense and the defense did it’s just as Godwin is now 2-0 in district play and looking to make a push towards the playoffs themselves. Freeman and Hermitage await in the second half but if Godwin can get one of those and win the games they will be favored in, the playoffs might not be such a crazy though. For Glen Allen, their best chance for victory lies in the second half but at 0-5 the playoffs will not be in the cards this season.

Chancellor 42-7 over James River
The Rapids got on the board first with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Brian Grigsby from Jack Dash. That touchdown pass proved to be the only points the Rapids would post on this night as the Rapids fell to the Chargers. The Chargers proved too much all the way around from offense to defense and the elements did not help matters. For James River, at 2-3 at the halfway point and Monacan next week and Bird still to come, this Rapids team will need some help to get back to the playoffs…

Highland Springs 49-24 over Atlee
My thoughts on the Springers before the season began was that offensively they had the potential to be special but the defense left me with some concern. Last night’s game validated my thoughts on this team. The Springers offense exploded for almost 700 yards and seven touchdowns with five different players reaching the endzone on this night. The Raiders held a brief lead, 3-0 to open the game but the Springers scored in the first quarter and then dominated the second half to lead 26-3. In the third quarter the Raiders outscored the Springers 21-8 but the damage had been done. The Raiders have dropped two of their last three and for the Springers, if this game is any indication of how the second half of the season will play, the region and 5A better watch out.

Manchester 42-2 over George Wythe
Oddly enough the first part of this game was rather close. The Bulldogs defense actually came up with a big play in the second quarter to score a safety. That was the closest the Bulldogs would get to the Lancers as they would take off from there. Kionte Hamlet would score two touchdowns, one on the ground and one in the air as quarterback for the Lancers with the loss of Brendan Clark. The defense would even get into the scoring themselves with D’Jermaine Layne scoring on an interception return. The Bulldogs were a huge underdog going into this one as for Manchester, at 4-1, the Lancers appear to have their sights set on their first playoff appearance as a 6A team but they will still have obstacles in the second half in the shape of Monacan and Hermitage.

Hanover 23-16 over Patrick Henry
Before last week, these two teams were undefeated, as it stood coming into this one, someone was going to be the loser of two straight. A week ago the Hawks defense struggled to stop Atlee in the second half but on this night, while the Patriots offense was able to move the ball, the Hawks defense came up with big plays and capitalized on Patriots turnovers to take this one. The Hawks needed this one with Highland Springs this week and for Patrick Henry, the road won’t get any easier as they host a Varina team that beat an undefeated Henrico team for a second straight season. You can read more about this game in detail here… http://virginiapreps.forums.rivals.com/threads/patrick-henry-falls-to-hanover-23-16.26792/

Varina 13-12 over Henrico
For a second straight season the Blue Devils ended the Warriors undefeated season. The Blue Devils were the first ones on the board with a Shaheed Adeyola touchdown on the ground which is ironic given the Blue Devil run game had been questioned as of late and for a half of football that score of 6-0 held for the Blue Devils. Xavier Goodall however had a nice night running the ball himself scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter on his way to 166 yards on the ground. The Warriors however are kicking themselves for the miscue towards at the end of the game. The Warriors in field goal range spiked the ball on fourth down thus giving the ball back to Varina and sealing their first loss of the season. Henrico entertains Armstrong and will have to get over this tough loss rather quickly as for Varina, the win is much needed and as rough of a start as it has been, with a win this Friday, Varina would be 3-3.

Hermitage 42-6 over John Marshall
The Panthers are now 5-0 on the season with a win over John Marshall last night 42-6. The Panthers rolled off seven touchdowns before the Justices ever got on the board in the fourth quarter. Eli Odom had a huge night, his best this season as a matter of fact with 186 yards in the air and four touchdowns, all which came in the first half mind you. Hermitage as the season has gone on like so many continues to get better and better which will provide for entertaining month of playoffs in November. For John Marshall, this team is better than the 1-4 record they currently possess and I think the second half they could get at least two wins and be in contention for a playoff spot.

Midlothian 3-0 over Huguenot in overtime!
In what can only be described as a defensive battle, this one stretched four quarters scoreless as both teams fought for their second win of the season. Elijah Johnson led the Falcons defensive effort with big play after big play such as a forced fumble, sack and even an interception. As good as the Falcons defense played however, it was the Trojans who came out on top with a Liam Tuohy 23-yard field goal. At this point neither team is currently out of the playoff picture in 4A but going into the second half of the season, they will need more wins or else they will again be missing the postseason picture.

Hopewell 47-8 over Petersburg
This one was never in doubt as Hopewell brought its losing streak to an end with a dominating win over the Wave. The Blue Devils scored in every way be it offense, defense and special teams. It was Nas Cooper on offense that got the Blue Devils an early lead in the first quarter with two touchdowns. In the second quarter the Blue Devils scored 26 points to take a 40-0 lead into the half. Petersburg’s lone score of the night came in the fourth quarter. For Petersburg, this is now their third straight loss and will have to get back to winning in the second half if they are to make the playoffs for a third straight season. For Hopewell this was a much needed win after two straight losses themselves.

Thomas Dale 42-8 over Prince George
Since their loss to Bird, the Knights have been rolling, this week’s victim was Prince George. The Knights Maxwell Oxendine continues to shine although he did just rush for 52 yards but he did score three touchdowns on the ground. It’s the defense however that has been getting it done for the Knights in 2015 just as much as the offense. The Knights had a shutout going into the fourth quarter and while Prince George did score late, the game was in hand for the Knights. In three games since their loss to Bird, the Knights have allowed just one two touchdowns… The second half of the Knights district slate is tougher than their first two but the Knights look to have a defense that could make some noise in November.
