The game at the end of the 4th quarter and a few observations...

At the end of the game:
  • James Madison scores and leads 21-14.
  • South County gets the ball with 5:33 to play at their own 15 (after a hold on the kickoff), one timeout remaining.
  • The Stallions advance the ball out to their own 42, 1st and 10, with a Jordan Dennis scramble on 3rd and 9, followed by screen pass to right side for 4 yards, then a swing pass to the RB to left flat.
    4:09 to go
One would think the Stallions are marching to tie...
  • 1st and 10, LB blitz (Jarvis), and everything gets pushed into the QB, and Dennis down for a loss
  • 2nd and 19, Jarvis blitzes again this time outside the left tackle, unimpeded to the QB, and Dennis down for a loss
  • 3rd and 31, and guess what... Jarvis blitzes again, this time thru the A gap with a quick swim move and direct to the QB, and Dennis down for a loss losing the ball... recovered at their own 7 yard line
  • 4th and forever (45) Pannoni waves the white flag and and South County punts from the back of their own end zone
The Warhawks get the ball back at the own 48 with 1:33 to play and run out the clock.

A few notes:
  • SoCo was playing from behind the sticks a good amount with 3rd and 4th and long... but would pull it out of their hat half the time (e.g. hook and ladder on 4th and really long for big gain and a 1st down, tall receivers to pull down floaters on scrambles).
  • SoCo's punting game isn't that great... but their defense is pretty good, tall DBs
  • Dennis is dangerous off schedule
  • Pannoni went deep into the playbook... even brought out the classic double wing formation for the first touchdown
  • Madison's RB Knicely has great acceleration, once he picks a hole... bang...
  • Madison's defensive front and LBs are no joke... and late in the game the team's conditioning showed
  • The Warhawk's 2nd leading scorer this season was Danika Pfleghardt the PAT kicker  (OK, probably 3rd after this game)
Expect to see rematch in the 6C/6D State Semi-Final game.
