There is one week left in the regular season. Playoffs are so close, and some teams cemented their place in the postseason on Friday. Here’s a breakdown of the Southside action.

George Washington 21, Tunstall 0

Despite their lowest point output of the season, GW remained undefeated with a shutout of Tunstall. GW led just 7-0 at the half but did have 356 yards of offense. Two missed field goals kept this one close. C.J. Graves scored on a 22-yard run in the first quarter, which proved to be enough to move the team to an impressive record of 9-0.

Altavista 34, Rustburg 0

Star UVa commit Juan Thornhill and teammate Meche Maulbeck combined for five touchdowns in a 34-0 thrashing of Rustburg on Friday.

RHS punted five times and failed to convert on three fourth downs.

The successful defensive effort is Altavista’s fifth shutout of the campaign.
Thornhill had three rushing touchdowns, while passing to Maulbeck for a touchdown, who also had a rushing score.

Dan River 28, Gretna 19

Years ago, heck, even last year, this would have been an impressive win. But with how poor Gretna has been this season, Dan River may have some work to do after the 28-19 win.

Gretna took a 6-0 lead, but DRHS rallied with a Que Stephens touchdown run of three yards for the 7-6 lead in the first.

But Dan River held just a 21-19 lead heading into a heated fourth quarter, before Tremaine Edmunds scored on a 51-yard run to seal it.

Gretna fell to 0-9 with the loss, while Dan River is 7-3 and waits its playoff fate.
