Blog VHSL Class 5 State Championship - Highland Springs 33, Maury 19 - Final

Springers start from their own 17 and on second down the Springers are hit with a penalty, ineligible receiver down field.
 
Martin funs for a first down and is hit out of bounds with flag thrown in addition for late hit. Springers 1st & 10 at their own 46.
 
Springers unable to get across midfield will punt. Maury on offense for the first time in the second half down 11.
 
Fumbled snap but Melvin Lowe is there to recover for a loss of 5 but avoid a bigger disaster with the ball now at their own 21.
 
Aziz Foster-Powell not finding much room to run up the middle, many of his carries have gone to the outside. He picks up 6 yards on his latest carry, 3rd & 1 for the Springers at Maury 28
 
Khristian Martin pass incomplete but does draw a pass interference call against Commodores. Springers ball now at the 18 of Maury much to the displeasure of the Maury contingent.
 
On ensuing kick, Kelvin Seay takes it to the house for Maury TD. 2-point conversion is knocked down but the Commodores inch closer, down 13-26 with 3:31 to go in 3rd quarter.
 
Springers offense stalling as it did in the first quarter. Will punt and Maury will get it back at about their own 34 after a favorable roll for the Springers.
 
Springers are hit with illegal block in the back on punt return. Takye Heath who has an INT, a TD and is committed to Virginia Tech shaken up on the play, walking to sideline.
 
Aziz Foster-Powell dancing along the sidelines with the carry but Frederick Johnson comes in with the stiff arm and knocks him out of bounds.
 
Flag comes in on Martin carry. Aziz Foster-Powell and Syncere Hawkins having a few words back from the sidelines. Holding is the call against the Springers. Facing 2nd & 15 and Martin is sacked in the backfield.
 
Martin finds Caron Ferguson with a spectacular diving catch. Springers are hit with another flag though, ineligible receiver down field and on 4th & 5 the Springers will punt.
 
Mario Miller runs for a first down. Commodores need a score to get back in this game down 13 with 8 minutes to go. Miller hits Peyton Jones with a pass who is immediately wrapped up by two Springers.
 
So where have I been? Well I made it to the field for the final minutes of the championship game. At that point Kelvin Seay scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Mario Miller to draw within 14. The Springers kept to the ground attack and ran out the clock. The game in hand.

The Springers won their 5th state title to improve to 5-2 all-time in state championship games. Maury has finished runner-up two years in a row but Coach McCain made no excuses in the post-game presser.
