Before we get to a couple games involving Class 1 schools and Bay Rivers District teams on this final Thursday of September 2021, let's review how the Picks battle is going between VaPreps Publisher Matthew Hatfield and his ESPN Radio 94.1 Saturday morning counterpart, Coach Ed Young...

Hatfield's Fri - Sat. Weekend Total: 24-3 (88.9%)
Hatfield's Tier 1 Selections: 5-1 (83.3%)
Hatfield's Tier 2 Selections: 2-1 (67%)

Hatfield's Season Total: 131-30 (81.4%)

Hatfield's 757 Fri - Sat. Weekend Total: 19-1 (95%)
Hatfield's Tidewater Season Total: 78-13 (85.7%)

Coach Young's 757 Fri - Sat. Weekend Total: 15-5 (75%)
Coach Young's 757 Season Total: 72-19 (79.1%)

So to Recap last week - - Matt beat Coach Young by four games in the head-to-head as King's Fork, Maury, Churchland and Kempsville all came through. Both misfired on New Kent/Poquoson, while Hatfield also missed on Matoaca upending Thomas Dale and Honaker taking down Grundy.

THURSDAY 9/30/21 Action:

New Kent (2-2) at Lafayette (3-0) . . .
After allowing just 18 total points in wins over Colonial Heights and Bruton to start, the Trojans have been hit for 63 points over the past two contests, double-figure losses to Warhill and Poquoson. While there are a host of new faces on defense for Andy Linn’s Rams, their experience usually shines through, as it did from rallying from ten down to beat York. They’ve scored no fewer than 35 points in any game, and with the combo of UVA baseball commit Luke Hanson at QB and Adrian Warren at running back, look for them to keep humming in this Bay Rivers District tilt.

Matt Hatfield Says – Lafayette 38-12
Coach Ed Young Says – Lafayette 30-12

Colonial Beach (2-2) at West Point (1-0) . . . This matchup of Class 1 schools features a Pointers team from the Tidewater District getting back in action and a Colonial Beach squad out of the Northern Neck District that reaches the halfway point in this game. Khalil Norris ran for 80 yards and 2 TD's on 13 carries to complement Phillip Hart (16Att. 88Yds.) in a 22-0 shutout of Rappahannock.

Colonial Beach could easily be 3-1 or 4-0 as they fell to King & Queen in triple-overtime and got beat by Sussex Central 22-16. They handled Franklin 24-8 and blanked Arcadia 44-0 in their other two contests. West Point runs the football 87% of the time, so if the Drifters force them to pass, that figures to spell advantage Colonial Beach.

Matt Hatfield Says – Colonial Beach 20-15
Coach Ed Young Says – Colonial Beach 30-21
