After eight seasons at the helm of West Point High School's boys basketball team, James Montgomery has decided it is time to step away.

Montgomery, who led the Pointers to an 18-6 season during the 2021-22 campaign, saw his team come up just a victory shy of the State Tournament each of the past two seasons. The Tidewater District Coach of the Year led the Pointers to a 57-31 regional quarterfinal win over Mathews - the team that kept them from the State Playoffs in 2021 by winning the Region 1A Championship - before falling to Washington & Lee 56-50 in the regional semis.

"All the wins and awards were fun, but the people I met and the relationships that were built will last longer than any award," Montgomery commented in a tweet announcing his resignation.

During his tenure at West Point, Montgomery notched 84 wins. He also was chosen co-Tidewater District Coach of the Year in 2014-15.

The Pointers will graduate Tidewater District Player of the Year and 6-foot-8 forward Cade McCulloch, but are slated to return a trio of player who earned 1st or 2nd Team All-District honors in Ichi Layne (Class of 2024), Elijah Adkins (Class of 2024) and Cairi Hines (Class of 2023).
