DISCLAIMER: Game just ended but I was unable to get to West Potomac this evening for the game live, so this brief report is based wholly on the online telecast...West Potomac quarterback Preston Jones ran for two scores, threw for another and controlled the tempo throughout to lead the Wolverines. For the Cougars, David Allely was just relentless on both sides of the ball, leading the Cougar defense and emerging as Oakton's primary rusher with a bruising style in the wake of the season ending injury last week to Oakton's leading rusher Patrick Francisco. But Allely's heroics were not enough. West Potomac, which scored on a 45 yard pick six in addition to the three Jones-led scores, trailed 20-14 at the half but surged ahead 21-20 on a Jones 5 yard run in the third quarter following an interesting decision by Oakton. The Cougars declined a ten yard illegal man downfield penalty that would have pushed the Wolverines back to the 15. Instead, Oakton took the incomplete pass and the down and Jones was flushed out of the pocket and ran it in untouched around the left side on the very next play. A quarter later, on a 4th down play, Jones connected on a thirteen yard touchdown pass that appeared to seal it but the extra point was missed, giving Oakton life. But the Cougars, who were shut out entirely in the second half, marched to about the West Potomac thirty but could get no closer. The first half scores by Oakton came on a blocked punt, a 3 yard pass Tutone to Bacon, and an Allely seven yard run. Both teams now go into a bye week and resume play on October 10. Oakton, 3-2, will host Chantilly; West Potomac, 2-3, travels to West Springfield.
