This game was certainly not what I expected. After hearing about the prolific South Lakes offense, coupled with the fact that this SL team was essentially the exact same one that led WF last year 13-10 in the 4th quarter before finally falling 24-13, I expected a close game that would go down to the wire.

WF started the game on their own 20 yard line and quickly moved downfield to the SL 11 yard line, where they faced a 4th and one. Johnson ran a QB sneak for 3 yard and WF would go on to score on a 6 yard Johnson to Eckert pass for a 7-0 lead at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter. SL started their first possession on their own 20 yard line but after a first down WF's Lydic intercepted a tipped pass from SL's Miles at the SL 41 yard line. WF quickly turned that turnover into a 34 yard Johnson to Frimpong pass and WF was ahead 14-0 with 5:47 remaining in the first quarter. After a SL punt on their next possession, WF put together a 78 yard drive in just 6 plays, capped by a 2 yard Johnson run to extend the lead to 21-0 with 14 seconds left in the first quarter. SL punted again on their first possession of the second quarter and WF again took immediate advantage with Johnson linking up with Eckert on a 78 yard passing TD to put WF ahead 28-0 with 7:22 to play in the first half. SL failed to move the ball again and gave WF a short field when the punt only traveled to midfield due to the wind. After a defensive PI flag was waived off and SL's White intercepted Johnson at the SL 14 yard line on the same play, SL took over on their own 14 yard line-stopping WF for the first time in the game. However, SL again was forced to punt and WF took over on their own 45 yard line with the half winding down. WF quickly drove the field and ended the drive with an 8 yard Johnson to Eckert passing TD to extend the lead to 35-0. At this point in the game, WF's Johnson was 10-12 passing for 232 yards and one INT, 4 passing TDs, and he also had 4 rushes for 28 yards and another TD. A very impressive first half performance.

Trailing by 35 points, the second half began with a running clock and the game moved swiftly. SL received the ball to start the second half and drove into WF territory before WF's Petrillo intercepted Miles on the WF 39 yard line, returning the ball to the SL 47. After a Johnson to Eckert pass gained 42 yards to the SL 5 yard line, WF's Hinton took a pitch and scored on a 2 yard run to extend the lead to 42-0 with 2:07 to play in the third quarter. SL finally got on the board on their next possession when SL's Mensah capped an 80 yard drive with a 45 yard TD run to cut the lead to 42-6 (XP blocked) with 11:08 to play. After a short WF punt, SL put together a 43 yard drive capped by a 2 yard Mensah run (2XP failed) and the score was now 42-12, which is how the game ended.

Westfield will now face Oscar Smith next week in a rematch of WF's wild 49-42 3OT championship game from last year.

Nice summary as usual.

Westfield has been an interesting team this season. The 35-0 win over Centreville and this win over South Lakes have been extraordinarily dominant performances. But they have had some very lackluster, almost disinterested games e.g. T.C. Williams (21-14 win) and Stone Bridge (34-16 loss). They were short a number of starters for Briar Woods (35-34 2OT loss) and Robinson (29-28 come-from-behind win) so those games were a bit more understandable to me. Playing #97 Cockrill on the defensive line has really shored up that unit the last half of the season.

If they bring their "A" game to Hampton I think they have a shot taking down OS. Anything less than that will not be enough.

The move to Hampton has OS traveling maybe 35 minutes while Westfield nearly a 3 hour drive. It almost seems like this scenario was written for OS - Shon Mitchell getting that elusive state title in his backyard.
