Following the first two games of the 8th Annual VirginiaPreps Hoops Classic which ended in overtime and with a dunk at the buzzer, respectively, expectations were high for the battle between Williamsburg Christian and James Monroe.
The pace of the game was quick out of the gate with Willaimsburg Christian using a balanced attack that saw Xavier Green and Cle'Von Greene combine for 14 points in the first quarter as they built a 22-17 lead in the first quarter. Countering their attack was James Monroe's Percy Burt who totaled 9 of the Yellowjackets' 17 in the opening period.
Things went south for James Monroe quickly in the second period as Williamsburg Christian score nine quick unanswered points including a monster dunk from Xavier Green in an and-one situation to help the Eagles sprint out to a 31-17 lead just two minutes in.
Not willing to roll over, James Monroe answered with an 8-2 run of their own to cut the Eagles' advantage to 33-25 midway through the period before a putback dunk by Green slowed the Jackets momentum. Using defensive tenacity and taking advantage of Green's length, who totaled three dunks in the first half, has helped the Eagles to a 42-27 edge at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Eagles continued to clamp down on the Yellowjackets while be both efficient and explosive on offense getting easy buckets in transition and running smooth sets when slowed. Green continued to pace the offensive attack entering the fourth quarter with 23 points to his credit. With just eight minutes left to play, WCA held a 63-43 advantage.
James Monroe mounted a bit of a comeback early in the fourth scoring the first six points of the period, but WCA slowed things down, regrouped and restored their edge, cruising to a 79-67 victory
