Hatfield's VHSL Friday Night Football Picks for 8/30/24 (Week 1)

It's the first full weekend of Virginiia High School Football action here in 2024.

Some games were postponed because of weather on Thursday night with a handful made up on Friday morning as well as in the afternoon. So thankful am I for the NFHS Network, allowing me to dip in on Hayfield / West Springfield, John Champe / Briar Woods, Patriot / Westfield, Loudoun County / Woodgrove, Mountain View / Forest Park along with a couple others.

There are some Tidewater Predictions already up on the site here for free this week. That includes some highlight games involving teams in the '757' area code.

In the next post, we give you Picks for a dozen matchups on this final Friday of August that grab our attention for this evening statewide... we'll dub it Dynamic Dozen...

Trouble at Hayfield

You are parsing words here and worse they do not make sense. No findings is no findings and whether you want to talk about eligibility to attend school or eligibility to participate under VHSL rules is a difference without a distinction.

I do not care one way or the other whether Hayfield wins or loses. My comments were about an investigation and at least the appearance of a clown show at the highest leadership level in one of Virginia's largest public school systems. This appears, on the surface at least, to be a classic case of the tail wagging the dog and I doubt other Fairfax leaders inside or outside the school system will continue to sit idly by and watch the system tainted by the actions of a few.
I was just giving my understanding from what was said at the school board meeting last night. The superintendent said that the residency threshold for being allowed to enroll in a school was different than the threshold for being eligible to play a sport, that the sports eligibility went through the VHSL, and that not all of the athletes had been cleared to play. If I've misunderstood...it won't be the last time.

Patriot 41 - Westfield 24

The Scott Vossler era at Westfield started off on a negative note but the Bulldogs also faced a very strong Patriot team. Patriot came out of the gate fast and coasted to a 41-24 win.

PAT took the opening KO and went 65 yards in three plays, scoring on a 54 yard McCarter run down the home sideline. After Opare's XP Patriot led 7-0 less than three minutes into the game. WF started their first possession on their own 37 yard line and, helped by several Patriot penalties, reached the PAT 15 yard line but stalled and settled for a 32 yard Wieman FG to cut the lead to 7-3 with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter. I did not know it at the time, but how those two drives went was a harbinger of what the game would be like for all but the final few minutes: PAT using big plays and a quick strike offense; WF sometimes getting limited ball movement then stalling or else being shut down by the Patriot defense.

PAT's next possession moved the ball to the WF 42 yard line before they punted to pin WF at their own 8 yard line. WF gained only a yard and punted the ball back to PAT on the WF 46 yard line. Not long after, McCarter had a 44 yard run to the WF 2 yard line and then Knutson punched it in for a 14-3 lead (Opare XP) with 10:55 remaining in the half. WF had very good field position on their next drive when a short KO was returned 45 yards by WF's H. Johnson to the PAT 29 yard line. But after an offensive PI call WF found themselves back up to the PAT 46 yard line and they ended up punting. PAT started their next drive at their own 31 yard line and quickly scored, with the key plays being a Knutson to Roloff 40 yard pass to the WF 24 yard line and a Knutson 2 yard scoring run. Opare missed the XP and PAT was now up 20-3 with 5:05 remaining in the half. WF's next drive went 66 yards, the big play being a 42 yard Carlson to Lee pass, before Carlson took it in on a QB sneak from the one yard line to cut the Patriot lead to 20-10 (Wieman XP) with 46 seconds remaining in the half.

WF received the second half KO and moved only 16 yards to just inside PAT territory before punting. PAT, starting at their own 20 yard line, quickly struck again with a 48 yard TD pass from Knutson to Noakes to extend their lead to 27-10 (Opare XP) with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter. WF went three and out on their next possession, then PAT went 60 yards with McCarter scoring on a 24 yard run (Opare XP) to go up 34-10 with 4:39 remaining in the third quarter. WF again punted and the short punt put PAT just inside midfield. After another big play, a 26 yard run by Brown, PAT moved to the WF four yard line where on 4th and three McCarter scored from four yards out for a 41-10 PAT lead (Opare XP) with 8 seconds left in the third quarter. WF's first drive of the fourth quarter started at their own 36 yard line. Using a lot of clock, WF scored on a 4th and goal at the one yard line when Carlson again snuck it in to cut the Patriot lead to 41-17 (Wieman XP) with 3:52 remaining in the game. WF then executed a perfect bouncing onside kick that was recovered by WF's Flamer on the PAT 40 yard line. Two plays later Carlson found Morin on a sideline out pattern, Morin dodged a defender, then scored to cut the lead to 41-24 (Wieman XP) with 2:44 remaining. WF then attempted another onside kick but PAT was ready for it and recovered the ball at midfield. PAT then ran out the clock to seal the win.

Indian River/Varina

Yep you are correct 2 minutes and 35 seconds left in the game and they lose the ball on a fumble. Then at the end of the game varina drives the ball all the way down to the one yard line 3rd and one and was called for illegal procedure which moved the ball back to the six yard line.Varina should have won this game easily. I just don't understand with all the talent that Varina has the offensive coordinated is not using the talent to its potential. Stop playing so conservative
100%. Varina had to have that game last night. Herm in two weeks, Glen Allen, gotta go to Ashland and play an underrated PH team (they look really good with Roose at QB), and then hosting the Springers, who look like a machine, to end the season.

Indian River/Varina

Varina had the game won last night but piss poor playcalling/clock management lost it. I’m no expert or rocket scientist but D1 Carter is probably 2x the athlete Ant Fisher was so why aren’t they putting the ball in his hands to run the ball to win these games like they did the year Fisher led them to the state championship? Wyche is a top 3 QB in the region, but he’s 5’8, maybe 155. Carter is 6’2, 185 with 4.4 speed. Gotta put him behind that big line and let him make a play and run out the clock. It ain’t hard at all.

Indian River/Varina

I don’t know much about Bishop McNamara but what are your thoughts on that game with Varina this week?
Those WCAC teams are tough man. St. John’s, Gonzaga, DeMatha, Good Counsel. BM isn’t the program that those teams are, but there’s still a pretty high level of talent there. I see that they’ve played a lot of DC public schools outside of their WCAC schedule so Varina is a huge schedule upgrade. Varina could very well be 0-2 going to a huge game with Herm if they don’t clean it up. From what I’ve seen, I like Herm in that matchup and you won’t find a bigger Varina homer than me.

Trouble at Hayfield

There are different aspects to the situation. Whether they are eligible to attend the school is an FCPS issue, whether they are eligible to play football there is a VHSL issue.

Anyway, Hayfield up 41-0 over West Springfield in the third quarter.

HSHS vs Manchester start year off with a bang.

Down year for the Lancers? Or is HS just that good?
Honestly I think it is a little of both. I think the Springers held back a little bit on offense with Phoebus on hand... didn't want to show all their cards. Lancers defense played well in the first half but the offense is what worries me going forward. Did not appear to have the same pizzazz as previous seasons but whether that is more a reflection of the Springers defense or new OC at Manchester and obviously HC. Next game will tell us a lot about Manchester... based on what I saw last night I would say 6-4 is not out of the question.
