Varina vs Huguenot

Their games against Powhatan & Monacan make me think they lose this game. Both of those teams are spread teams who run the ball & in both those games they trailed against inferior talent. Now you goto Varina and play against a team with the same scheme but SIGNIFICANTLY better talent who has played a stronger schedule than you, I think in the 4th quarter that will come into play. It means something when a team has been in a war an knows how to squeeze out a win even when they play bad. I said 24-22 Varina this weekend I’m starting to lean 28-16 Varina. I’ve just got to see it to believe it from Huguenot.

King George @ Dinwiddie

I think KG will struggle in the run game. They have been susceptible to the big play in the run game all year. If Dinwiddie can play mistake free in the run game this game could get away quickly because that allows the RPO game to come into effect. If KG stays in the game it’ll be because they’ve attacked the Generals over the top (passing game) as well as getting a few turnovers. I’m very interested in King George’s first drive to see if they try to establish the deep ball early. Dinwiddie will be up for this game being that they get a chance to try and exact revenge for last year & seeing KG give up 40, 33, 36, 35,42 with many players going both ways has me thinking Dinwiddie could possibly reach 50 if they get a few stops. I’m gonna go 49-21 Generals

Lady Indians Headed to State Title Game

I see that no one else has addressed this yet so I will give a brief report. (REALLY brief by my standards, mainly because I don't speak volleyball language.)

The Indians traveled to Clarke County tonight and won in five sets in the state semi-finals. Clarke had won the Region 2-B title last week by beating Fort in three sets on the Indians' home court. Each team then posted a state quarter-final win over the weekend. In Fort's case, that was also a five-set win. I believe it was over Bruton but don't quote me on that.

Anyway, tonight the hometown Eagles won the first and third sets, which put the Indians in come-from-behind mode. They pulled out a win in a fairly close fourth set. I think it was something like 25-21.

In the deciding set, the teams were tied at every point from 1-5, before the Indians broke in front for good and gave themselves some breathing room. They moved out to an 11-6 lead before Clarke fought back to close to within 12-10, but the Indians were then able to put it away with a 15-11 win.

Fort will now advance to the state finals Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center. I believe I have read that will be at 2:30. I assume that their opponent was also determined this evening and that will be whatever team survived out of Regions C and D.

As for Clarke, tonight was their second bitter loss in front of the home fans, as their football team lost a shocker Friday night to Madison County, although they entered that game unbeaten and seeded number one in the region. Just like with the girls, Clarke had beaten Madison on the road the week before, only to fall short at home.

So congrats to the Lady Indians and best wishes for Saturday. It is always exciting when a county team brings home a state title in any sport.

Unusual situation with Graham playoff game

Graham plays it's home games at Mitchell Stadium, just across the state line in Bluefield, WV and has their game scheduled for 7 o'clock on Friday. Some legal issues caused the WV playoffs to be delayed and now Bluefield, WV is scheduled to play at the same time (Friday night at 7 o clock). (Their opponent got to choose the day and time )... It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Perhaps Graham will have to play against V High at nearby Tazewell or Bluefield could end up playing at nearby Princeton, WV. Either that or somebody will have to play on Saturday. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Graham reserved the stadium first....but there will have to be a compromise. This was bound to happen sooner or later. This and the city of Bluefield, WV allowing Appomattox (nothing wrong with letting them practice, but not asking the host team was sort of a slap in the face) to practice at the stadium without informing the folks at Graham a few years back may be what finally drives Graham to build it's own stadium.

Hayfield

I've been watching from a far (relocating)... Read a couple intriguing articles from today in Fairfax.

6 FCPS Coaches signed a letter with plans to forfeit their games vs Hayfield. Not sure if they'll be playoff games... Or can they forfeit games already played? Or both?

FCPS School board has fired the law firm who represented the families that filed the injunction vs the VHSL..

Same school board is preparing to conduct their own investigation. Sounds like things are getting very serious.... Too bad they waited so long to get involved!

Few Surprises in Class 2, Thoughts and Predictions

I have missed very few Graham home games in 50 years. Virginia High had a hurricane and plenty of adversity to deal with too. I'm not going to make excuses for the G-men. They need to show up and play ball. The penalties and sloppy play will not cut it. They have seemed a little better the past couple of games with that, but the quality of competition wasn't exactly stellar. Graham has a ton of potential and it's hard to argue against an 11-0 record, but they are their own worst enemy sometimes.

They had power when we got there. Bluefield didnt.
