Predictions Hatfield's VHSL Region Playoff Picks for Tuesday 2/21/23

While only six regions were in action on President's Day with tournament play, there were a few barn-burners that had folks on the edge of their seats.

In Region 6A, James River played host to Dominion District rival Cosby and seemed to have control of the game in pursuit of a second consecutive State Playoff berth. However, the ending was one they'd like to forget, and Cosby fans will remember for an awful long period of time. Trailing by five with 38.3 seconds to go on the road, Ron Carr's Titans sent the game to overtime on a buzzer-beater from Nigel Clarkson, a talented junior wing who had his prayer answered. Then in the OT session to break the tie and give a 72-70 win, it was the young man that saved the ball from going out of bounds at the end to get it to Clarkson at the end of regulation - junior guard Tony Chau - delivering the game-winner.

Avenging a double-overtime loss from a season ago in the Region 4A Tournament, the Great Bridge Wildcats gave Head Coach Scott Bigbie his first playoff victory at the regional level. The Wildcats recovered from losing a late lead in regulation to edge the same team that ended their 2021-22, campaign, the Churchland Truckers, 72-67 in OT in the Region 4A Tournament. Cam Walters, Antonio Brown and Christian Brown all came through with key plays in the OT. Antoine made two foul shots with 11 seconds left in OT to provide breathing room as Great Bridge advanced in postseason play at the regional level since 2013, a year they won the Eastern Region AAA Championship under the direction of Gary Obenour.

Another game that needed more than the customary 32 minutes of regulation to decide a victory came in Region 3A, where Colonial Heights outlasted Lakeland 73-71 in double-overtime behind 25 points from T.J. Freeman.

Maybe the most anticipated game of the night lived up to its billing in a Sub-Region 5D clash that didn't result in the loser being eliminated, but certainly had late-game drama as Sidney Webb and Abu Yarmah steered Patrick Henry-Roanoke to its second win of the season over Albemarle, 62-59. More from that game can be seen in Robert Anderson's Recap here.

While not spine-tingling to the end, Phoebus senior guard Jordan Leaks put on a show and arguably the best individual effort of the night with 43 points - 19 in the third quarter - to go with five three-pointers as the Phantoms bounced York 72-43 in Region 3A.

So on to a Tuesday full of mega matchups, perhaps headlined by the gauntlet that is the Region 5B Quarterfinals at Norview, where a lower-seeded Pilots team hosts a higher-seeded Woodside team for the second year in a row.

Before getting to predictions on those games, let's give you a quick review of how the Picks did from Monday 2/20/23 below...

6A = 3-1 (missed on Cosby/James River)
5D = 1-0
4A = 3-1 (missed on Great Bridge/Churchland)
3A = 5-0
1A = 4-0
1B = 2-0

Monday 2/20/23 Region Playoff Total: 18-2 (90%)
Hatfield's 2023 Region Playoff Total: 47-11 (81%)

THE FUTURE: VHSL Approves Region Alignment for 2023--2027

After weeks of proposals, objections, and meetings, the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Executive Committee has officially approved the region alignment for its six classifications for the period from July, 2023 to June, 2027.

Please note that the League does make some adjustments to the alignment at the midway point (the summer of 2025) to account for changes in school enrollments, the opening of new schools, consolidation of current schools, etc.

In this piece, we will discuss each region that has a Metro RVA team, how it has changed, and a little information on schools that will be new to our area once postseason play begins.

New teams will be both bold and italicized. All Metro RVA teams will be in bold only unless they have moved regions, then they will be both as well.

ANALYSIS:
Interestingly enough, there is little change to the area's biggest region. Matoaca requested, and received, a move back up to Class 5, Region C. Caroline, who requested and received a move down from Region 4B to Class 3, Region B asked for that again, but this time were denied. The Cavaliers replace the Warriors, while the other sixteen teams remain the same including all four Hanover County schools.
