Riverheads/PM Quadruple Header Finishes in 2-2 Tie

However I am sure Parry McCluer fans are the ones who are the happiest tonight because they won the two varsity contests after Riverheads had opened the day by winning the two JV games. Overall each game had its high points including the nightcap, the boys varsity game. Since I am sure that is the one most of you are interested in hearing about, I will give you that punchline first.........that PM won 49-44 in overtime. Let me review the other games briefly and then I will give my usual amount of detail to that one.

I did not attend the JV girls game but Riverheads won 21-16. It was their first win of the year, so I am sure in the minds of those young ladies, theirs was the most important game of the day. So congrats to Coach Casto (yes we still have a Coach Casto at RHS!) and her troops and best wishes for more wins as the season progresses.

As for the second game of the day, the boys JV game, if you saw Tuesday's game at PM then you saw this one. The scores were almost identical (a 47-38 RHS win Tuesday and a 47-36 win tonight) and in each case, the Gladiators won by breaking open a close game in the second half.

However there was one huge difference in this game......the play of freshman Chris Dotson. Prior to tonight, he had been consistent but yet relatively quiet with maybe one double figure game in the Gladiators' first four outings. He does not start and was therefore only part of an overall well-balanced team that came into tonight with a 3-1 record.

But apparently the boy ate his Wheaties today, because he came off the bench as he always does and completely dominated the game tonight. He was able to work his way inside repeatedly and either score or draw fouls. Not only that but he closed out the first half with a buzzer-beating triple that gave RHS the lead going into the locker room. He continued attacking in the second half and was clearly the difference in the game.

I don't keep JV scoring but my crew and I were estimating that he had scored maybe 20-25. However between games, several inside sources (including teammates of his) were reporting 35. I personally heard that from at least three places. However I was also shown a tweet that said he had 29. So......29........or 35........or anywhere in between is pretty impressive and if the 6 footer is hopefully still growing and is destined to be the Big Red's big man of the future, bring him on!!! Congrats to the Big Red juniors, now 4-1 on the season with only a three-point loss at Stuarts Draft keeping them from being unbeaten.

Next up was the varsity girls game won by PM 45-35. The story of that one was pretty simple............the dominating play of center Anna Claytor. The 6'1" senior scored the first four points for the Blues and when RHS' tallest player, 5'11" Anna Shirley, drew two fouls by the midway point of the first quarter and had to take a seat, that opened things up for the Blues to take charge of the game. They stretched the lead out to as many as 16, but Riverheads closed on a 6-0 spurt to make the final more respectable. Taia Chandler led RHS with 11 points, and five teammates scored between three and seven for the Big Red. The loss drops the Lady Gladiators to 3-4 on the year but more importantly, they are 1-0 in district play as they head out to Buffalo Gap Tuesday.

Now about the boys varsity game......Wowza! Maybe it is just because it is the most recent game played, but this one had a level of intensity we have not seen in quite some time. As evidenced by the overtime score, neither team wanted to lose this one.

Riverheads came out scorching hot from three point range and for a while looked like they might break the record they just set last night. Five different players combined for six triples in the first quarter as the Gladiators took an 18-11 lead. Will Gardner then opened the second quarter with the Big Red's seventh trey, which gave them their biggest lead of the night at 21-11, and the second quarter clock was down to three minutes before Gabe Milo finally hit the first two-point basket for RHS.

Meanwhile PM did not panic as their teams have never been known to do, and they slowly crept back into the game which saw the teams head to the locker room with RHS in front 23-20. The pace was frantic but very few shots fell in that second quarter for either team.

The scoring pace never really picked up in the second half but that certainly does not mean that the action was boring. The teams were going at it tooth and nail as PM tried valiantly to take its first lead. But Riverheads held them at bay and still led 32-30 after three.

As the third period drew to a close, Gladiator fans were irate because of a 6-0 team foul discrepancy, despite the game having turned very physical. That situation never really improved because even through four quarters plus the extra session, the Blues spent quite a bit of time on the double bonus whereas Riverheads never even made it to the routine one and one.

In fact how is this for a statistic? Riverheads finished the game tonight with 10 three pointers and 7 two pointers. So do the math........that is 44, meaning they scored zero from the charity stripe. I think I remember one guy going to the line to try to convert an old-fashioned three, but unless I am just not remembering, that was the extent of Riverheads' free throw chances. So the home fans were most unhappy about that but in typical high school fashion, the Blues fans also did plenty of squawking, convinced that they were the ones being shortchanged by the stripes. As we know just about any game is like that.

The Blues finally took their first lead at 33-32 and things see-sawed until a 39-39 tie at the end of regulation. The Blues had a final six-second possession but failed to score. However, they scored on their first possession of overtime and never trailed again. But Riverheads did not go quietly as they trimmed a 45-39 lead down to 45-44 before PM put the game away with the final four points.

To their credit, the Blues won this one because they did not wilt under that first-quarter shooting clinic. They just stayed the course until the Riverheads shots stopped falling and slowly worked their way back into the game with their defensive quickness. Snider and Cook had done most of the damage Tuesday night and they were effective again tonight, but other guards such as Braedyn Houck hit some timely shots for the visitors.

Riverheads was led by Bennett Dunlap with three triples and 11 total points. Gardner was next in line with 9, followed by Carter Mooneyham with 8, and Henley Dunlap with 7. Overall the Gladiators are a balanced team this season, as eight of the 10 players have connected from behind the arc. Since they are vertically challenged this year, with no one over 6'2", a run and gun three point attack will almost have to be their primary approach. We will see how that works for them Tuesday when the Bison come calling.

Overall the quadruple header was a success so we will see if we do another one next year or if other schools decide to give the concept a try. You have to admit it saves on gas!

2023 Playoff Picture

With the changes to classifications and alignments prior to next season, the playoff picture will see some definite changes.

Region 3A will return 6 of the 8 playoff participants with Colonial Heights, Hopewell, IC Norcom, Lafayette, Lake Taylor and York.
  • Absent will be Phoebus who moves to 4A and Southampton who drops to 2A.
  • Looking to fill the holes of Phoebus & Southampton will be Grafton & Heritage (Newport News) who drop from Region 4A. Neither team made it past the first round in 2022.

Region 3B will return 7 of 8 playoff participants with Armstrong, Brentsville, Culpeper, Goochland, James Monroe, Skyline and Warren.
  • Absent will be Caroline who moves up to 4B.
  • Thomas Jefferson returns to Region 3B after a stint in 2A. TJ reached the region semifinals this past season.
  • Kettle Run who reached the Class 4 Final falling to Dinwiddie joins this region and will look to challenge as they did in Class 4.

Region 3C will return all 8 playoff participants with Brookville, Heritage (Lynchburg), Liberty Christian, Rustburg, Spotswood, Staunton, Turner Ashby and Wilson Memorial.
  • Joining the playoff field is Alleghany and East Rockingham who move up from Region 2A but made it no further than the first round in 2022.
  • Dropping from 4D is Waynesboro but like Alleghany & East Rockingham, they made it no further than the first round.

Region 3D will return all 8 of their playoff teams with no incoming teams so the question is... can Carroll, Northside, Pulaski, Tunstall or William Byrd bust up the playoff party in 2023?

With Phoebus going to Class 4... does Heritage reign supreme or will Kettle Run become a perennial contender or does someone else step up to rule the land?

Christmas Eve Weather-Related "What if" Question

First of all, Happy Holidays all you sports fans out there. Hope you are keeping warm wherever you are. It is in the teens in my neighborhood today with brisk winds and I suppose even colder in some parts of the state.

Which brings me to my question........if we had had this weather two weekends ago, how many of you would still be sitting in bleachers watching or waiting for your game and how many of you would have said "I don't care if I have already bought the ticket, it's too cold for me so I am staying home today?"

I know I might have had to give it some serious thought myself..........

Riverheads Sets School Record (?) in Rout Over Bath County

I am making that a question mark because I am not the official source for RHS but according to my (keep everything in a notebook at home) stats, the Big Red set a new school record tonight by hitting 14 three pointers in a 75-43 road romp over Bath County. The much-needed victory comes after some disappointing losses and hopefully can spur the team on to bigger and better things. They are now 2-3 on the season with both wins coming against the Chargers.

The surprising thing about tonight's aerial attack was that 12 of those triples came from just two players........one of whom has had many such big outings but the other one came from out of nowhere to set a new career high for himself. The not-at-all surprising assassin was senior captain and team leader Bennett Dunlap, who knocked down 7 of them and in most cases the net did not even move, as he led all scorers with 21 points.

But the game ball honors tonight just might have to go to sophomore J P Crawford, who knocked down five of his own from behind the arc and finished with 17 points. This is his first year on the varsity and his previous high had been eight points. But tonight he found a sweet spot or two and just felt very comfortable in the offense.

The two remaining triples came from senior Chris Brooks and sophomore Will Gardner, who coincidentally had torched these same Chargers with seven threes of his own in the season-opener when the Gladiators had only six bodies to put on the floor due to the football season still being in session. He scored his career high of 31 that night and still ranks as the Big Red's leading scorer so far this year. Also scoring in double figures tonight was Carter Mooneyham, who finished with 11 hard-earned points, mostly coming on fast break lay ups.

The game started out with a very slow pace and in fact Coach Weller pulled the starters midway through the first quarter and inserted the "blue team." That strategy was most likely due to the fact that the Gladiators have to turn right around tomorrow night and battle Parry McCluer for the second time this week. As a result, all 10 players saw plenty of action tonight.

Riverheads led 19-4 after one quarter, and already had four of those treys by that time. However they went somewhat cold in the second quarter and the Chargers actually won that period 9-8 to trail 27-13 at the break.

However, any intentions that RHS had of slowing the pace down or conserving their energy went out the window in the second half because both teams stepped up the tempo and we saw a track meet for the entire second half with Riverheads scoring 48 points and the Chargers a respectable 30. Each team fought hard for every loose ball right up to the final horn.

There was no JV game tonight, reportedly due to the Chargers having too few players available. Hopefully for their sake that is a temporary issue so that they can continue to build their program.

As mentioned Riverheads swings right back into action tomorrow night as part of the much-anticipated boy/girl quadruple header at home with Parry McCluer providing the opposition. The boys' teams just played in Buena Vista on Tuesday with RHS winning the JV game and PM taking the varsity game. Back in November, PM swept the RHS girls, giving them a 3-1 advantage so far. They will of course hope for a repeat performance tomorrow when the games get underway with the JV girls playing at 2:00.

Conversely, Riverheads would like to avenge some or all of those three defeats and even things up a bit. The remaining schedule will be JV boys at 4:00, Varsity girls at 6:00, and Varsity boys at 8:00. We are not sure if those are firm times or just estimates based on the average length of a game and the warm-up times in between. So your best bet is just to come in person and check out the action. For those of you in other areas, I assume that at least some of the event will be on NFHS. As the old saying goes "Check your local listings."

Regardless of what happens tomorrow, Riverheads will dive back in to Shenandoah District play Tuesday when the Big Red boys will host Buffalo Gap while the Lady Gladiators will travel to the Gap. We probably don't have to tell you how wild those two gyms will be!

Parry McCluer Spurts Past Riverheads

The Fighting Blues hit visiting Riverheads with a 17-0 scoring spurt straddling the first and second quarters tonight and rolled to a somewhat surprising 66-44 non-district win. PM only had a 2-5 record coming into the game and of course were playing their first season without the gigantic Spencer Hamilton, but with cat-quick guard Evan Cook running the offense and picking quite a few RHS pockets on defense, and with football stud John Snider muscling his way inside at will, the Gladiators just did not have the answer, despite having some "spurts" of their own.

In fact it was Riverheads that delivered the first punch as Gabe Milo reeled off the first nine points for the Big Red and staked the visitors to an early 13-6 lead with half the first quarter still left to play. He knocked down a triple and hit three other baskets as the scoreboard at one point read Milo-9, Blues-3. (Well it didn't really SAY that, but you get my drift!)

But someone flipped a switch, the Blues started getting into the passing lanes, and in what seemed like record time, PM was on top 23-13. When Milo finally broke the drought with his 11th point, and sharpshooter Will Gardner followed with a three to cut it to 23-18, it looked momentarily as if the Gladiators had weathered the storm and might get back in the game. However the Blues closed on a 10-3 surge to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room.

Things then went from bad to worse for Riverheads as PM hit them with another 12-0 burst to open the second half. However, to their credit the Big Red did not lay down and die as the Extended Dunlap Family Connection (Uncle Bennett and Nephew Henley) caught fire and delivered four triples between them as RHS cut the deficit to a potentially manageable 50-38 at the end of three.

However any thoughts of a Big Red comeback were quickly dashed as PM opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run and coasted to the victory. The two teams however have not seen the last of one another as they will meet around 8:00 Friday night in Game Four of the first-ever Riverheads Quadruple Header. The Blues will provide the opposition in all four games as the JV girls will open play at 2:00, followed in order by the JV boys around 4:00, the Varsity girls at 6, and the Varsity boys in the nightcap. PM has gone 3-1 against Riverheads on its home court, so the Gladiators would like nothing better than to do at least that well at home Friday to even the season.

Which gives you the clue that Riverheads did manage to win the JV game tonight. After a nip and tuck first half saw RHS take an 18-17 lead into the locker room, they settled the issue with a third-quarter burst and coasted from there to a 47-38 victory. The RHS juniors are now 3-1 on the season.

Although Friday's re-matches sound like they are close enough, all four Riverheads teams have other games prior to the quadruple header. The Lady Gladiators are hosting Covington Wednesday night and the boys travel to Bath County on Thursday. Both those are make up dates from games that were "iced out." On paper there would appear to be some RHS wins in those games to build up the Big Red confidence for the PM re-matches not to mention district play resuming Tuesday.
