Page County at Strasburg tonight

Could this game be a trap game for Strasburg? Could the Rams look past the Panthers with Central next week with the #1 seed and district title possibly up for grabs? Or will it be a let down after that physically demanding come from behind win at Luray last week. It is going to be strength on strength with the Rams run defense and the run heavy offense of the Panthers, Do the Panthers have the horses to stop the Rams three headed rushing attack of Stern, Coates and Roller? Opinions in this one

Give me your observations

This might be the wrong board to post this on, but I watch priamarily Class 1 football so why not? Here are two of my observations from the past couple seasons:
1. Offensive line stances are pretty bad. Even in a 2 point stance I see kids not aligned correctly with their feet and shoulders. If you are in a 3-point stance you should be aligned as if you are coming out of the blocks for the 100 meters. At least that's the way I was taught way back when.
2. Proper Tacklng is becoming a lost art. I've seen so much high tackling, trying to take a back/receiver down by the shoulders. Or it's the collision shot that typically doesn't pay off. Pads pop, yet the offensive player bounces off and gains more yardage.
Maybe I'm being too extreme, but these two things aggravate me like someone misreading an Edgar Allan Poe poem

Riverheads JVs Cap Off 6-1 Season With Romp Over Staunton

The season was a little shorter than usual due to circumstances beyond their control but first-year coach Bucky Cox and his Junior Gladiators made the most of it and wrapped up the campaign tonight with a solid 36-8 win over Staunton that came within 2 1/2 minutes of being a shutout. The Big Red had completely dominated the first half and taken a 36-0 lead into the locker room. That set the running clock into motion and the game was about to finish with that score when the subs fumbled a QB snap that laid on the ground for a few seconds before an opportunistic Storm player scooped it up and took it about 50 yards to get the visitors on the board.

But before that mishap, the game was all Riverheads. Freshman running back Jonathan Talbott opened the scoring for RHS in a big way as he returned the opening kickoff down the near sideline for a TD that only took 13 seconds. Once he broke the initial line of containment, he cut to his right and The Storm was no match for his speed.

On their next possession, the Gladiators executed a picture-perfect 7 1/2 minute drive, all on the ground, that according to our PA announcer (everybody's favorite Leland McCray) featured an amazing SIX first downs. Spencer Simpson got the honors as he scored that touchdown on the last play of the opening quarter.

Actually that touchdown and for that matter the game as a whole was 'kind of a drag" tonight for Riverheads but in a good way. Allow me to explain..........On that score as well as a dozen other running plays tonight, the Gladiators' three main ball-carriers (Talbott, Simpson, and Chase Donathan) simply REFUSED to go down and between the three of them, they probably gained an extra 50 yards of offense tonight simply by dragging defenders with them long after the initial contact. That says a lot about their determination.

Simpson scored a second touchdown in the second quarter and Donathan got his only score in the same frame, again by refusing to give up on the play until he crossed the goal line. But the highlight score of the night, and maybe even for the season, was turned in by the Big Red defense, specifically by Talbott.

Early in the second, with the score still 14-0, The Storm tried a screen pass from around their own 30 yard line. Talbott sniffed it out beautifully, stepped in front of the intended receiver, and took it in for the score. You diehard Gladiator fans might remember Zac Smiley scoring in a similar fashion a few years ago in a state final down in Salem.

That score made it 22-0 and pretty much took the wind out of the Staunton sails. The aforementioned TDs by Simpson and Donathan wrapped up the scoring for the home team and the subs handled the mop up duty in the second half.

The two varsity teams now meet in Staunton Friday night in what should be a wide open affair before RHS closes out the (varsity) regular season at home against Stuarts Draft the following Friday. You may recall that the SD and Riverheads JV teams moved their game ahead to an earlier date and played back in September. The Cougar Cubs, who I believe wrapped up their season also tonight with a perfect record, handed RHS its only loss that evening.

At one point, Riverheads had arranged for a non-conference JV game to be played next week against Virginia Episcopal School, but that has now been canceled, leaving tonight as the season finale. Congrats to Coach Cox and his staff on a job well-done and it appears that the Big Red football program will be more than ready for the Class 2 wars next fall.

Riverheads Trip to Staunton Highlights Next-to-Last Week of Shenandoah Regular Season

If you were to turn the clock back about three weeks, there were two major topics of conversation among Shenandoah District football fans. Number One: Is unbeaten Staunton the real deal or have they just played a soft schedule? and Number Two: Riverheads finally lost a game and they are not blowing out the other teams they face, so what is "wrong" with the Gladiators? Well here we are after a few more games and it is possible that answers to both those questions have already been given or soon will be.

In the case of Staunton, their game six seemed to indicate that yes, they really WERE the real deal when they scored three times in the final five minutes to turn back Stuarts Draft, a team that is still very much in contention for the district crown. But since then, they needed a miracle to squeeze by Fort Defiance and then finally tasted defeat for the first time Friday night in a 22-17 home loss to Buffalo Gap.

Meanwhile, Riverheads still has just the Lord Botetourt loss as their only blemish but until Friday night's 49-14 romp over Fort Defiance, they had not really "pounded" anybody since the first two games of the season when they put 61 and 55 points on the board against Waynesboro and Parry McCluer. So does Friday night's Fort win mean they are "back" or did they ever really go anywhere in the first place?

All of that speculation sets the stage for Riverheads to make a trip to Gypsy Hill Park Friday night on what sounds like it will be a perfect night for football and we should have some real answers after that game. Meanwhile, Stuarts Draft, the only other district team with just one loss will host Fort Defiance, and a pair of two-loss teams, Buffalo Gap and Wilson, will meet out at the Gap.

Regardless of what happens in Staunton Friday night, the district race will still not be settled because Stuarts Draft then travels to Riverheads next week for the season finale. However that is a case of Cart Before Cougar, although it will indeed be interesting if that turns out to be the "championship game" after all, when Staunton and even Wilson were in the title picture for the entire first half of the season.

So let's analyze these three games, along with Waynesboro hosting Turner Ashby. (Notice by the way that I am failing to mention that I only went 2-2 in last week's four-game slate.)

RIVERHEADS AT STAUNTON: The Gladiators have only lost once to Staunton and that was during the (then Leemen's) march to the state final when they almost took down mighty Appomattox. In every other year, RHS has handled them easily. Since The Storm has struggled mightily these past two weeks and Riverheads was clicking on all cylinders Friday at the Fort, it certainly looks on paper as if the Gladiators should prevail. After all there was a 33-point difference in what happened at Fort Defiance on consecutive Friday nights. Having said that, teams can sometimes come out hopping mad after suffering a loss, and if Staunton does that, they most definitely have the athletes to give Riverheads trouble. I will go with the Big Red by about 2-3 scores but Staunton will put up some points. I look for a 49-28 kind of game as opposed to a 28-7.

WILSON AT BUFFALO GAP: Seems like we have had a toss-up game every week and this week this has to be it. Neither team has a shot to capture the regular season title, but they are each very much in the mix for playoff action. So this one will be crucial. Having seen both when they came to Riverheads, I was impressed with Gap's defense, but yet they only managed to score once on the Big Red. Wilson on the other hand scored three times in Greenville and displayed a potent passing game, but they failed to stop anything Riverheads did. Just on a hunch, I will go with the Bison by something like 34-28, but if they come out of the locker room thinking they are still playing Staunton, they just might get "stung" by the Hornets.

FORT DEFIANCE AT STUARTS DRAFT: The Indians are still a young team but the improvement has been there and they will not be able to sneak up on anybody for the foreseeable future. The Cougars were destroyed at then powerful Luray early in the season, in addition to their loss to Staunton, so they too need a win to solidify their playoff standing. Fort may keep it close for a while but look for a Cougar victory somewhere in the 35-7 range, which will make SD's trip to Greenville next week pretty interesting, as we have known all along that it would be.

TURNER ASHBY AT WAYNESBORO: This one is not meaningful in terms of the 'Doah so let's just state the obvious. Waynesboro had high hopes this year but just didn't put the pieces together. They will fight to the end but TA should take this one easily.
