Westfield 49 - South Lakes 21

Westfield took advantage of starting field position inside South Lake's territory on their first three possessions to score 21 first quarter points and cruised to a 49-21 victory.

SL opened play on their own 20 yard line and went three and out with a short kick only reaching the SL 38 yard line. WF ran several plays and scored when H. Johnson ran it in from 8 yards out and it was 7-0 (Wiemann XP) with 5:21 to play in the first quarter. SL next possession started on their own 12 yard line and again went three and out with another short punt. WF took over on the SL 41 yard line and scored on a 20 yard Carlson to Morin pass to extend the lead to 14-0 (Wiemann XP) with 3:29 to play in the first quarter. After SL's third consecutive three and out, WF had a 47 yard drive when H. Johnson scored on the second play of the series on a 47 yard run to make the score 21-0 (Wiemann XP) with 1:44 to play in the first quarter. SL next possession again started deep in their own territory, but this time SL's Wood ran behind the left tackle, split two defenders in the secondary, and raced 84 yards for a score. After Bertoni's XP the score was cut to 21-7, WF, with 41 seconds remaining in the first quarter. WF's next possession was a three and out to give SL possession on their own 29 yard line, but the SL series ended with yet another three and out. WF's drive then went for 57 yards and ended with a Carlson to H. Thompson four yard TD pass to push the lead to 28-7 (Wiemann XP) with 7:41 remaining in the half. SL then went three and out again, but a wind aided punt of 59 yards went into the end zone. WF then returned the favor and went three and out, with the punt traveling to the SL 34 yard line and the half ended shortly after.

WF received the ball to start the second half and WF's Morin took the KO back 80 yards to the SL 11 yard line. WF's Lee then scored on the first play from scrimmage with an 11 yard run to extend the lead to 35 -7 (Wiemann XP) just 19 seconds into the half. After very little offense in the first half, SL's offense started to click on the next possession behind the running of Wood and the passing of Shuaib and they went 68 yards to get a 1 yard TD run from Wood to cut into the WF lead, 35-14 (Bertoni XP) with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter. WF's next possession ended when H. Johnson fumbled and SL's Kowalcyk recovered the ball on the SL 42 yard line. SL's offense could not take advantage of the turnover and went three and out. WF took over on their 14 yard line after the punt and began their longest drive of the game, 86 yards, capped by a 1 yard Lee run to push the lead back to 28 points, 42-14 (Wiemann XP) with 9:22 remaining in the game. SL's offense then came alive again, as several successful long completions led to a 1 yard TD run by Blakeney to cut the lead to 42-21 (Bertoni XP) with 5:42 remaining in the game. After WF punted on their next possession, SL ran several plays before muffing the QB-RB handoff and WF's Cho scooped up the ball and went 30 yards untouched for the score, 49-21 (Wiemann XP) with 1:04 to play. SL's final drive reached the WF 22 yard line but WF's Gwyn intercepted Shuaib in the end zone as time expired.

LIVE Game Blog - Cox (8-1) at Kempsville (7-2)

It's Senior Night at Kempsville High in Virginia Beach, where the Chiefs with a record of 7-2 overall play host to the visiting Frank W. Cox Falcons (8-1).

Win and you're the No. 2 seed in Region 5A = tht's the deal for Cox.

Win and you forge a 3-way tie with Cox and Salem for the No. 2 seed in Region 5A for Kempsville. However, the Chiefs end up in the preseason lot draw tie-breaker, we understand, behind each of those in that pecking order, so they would likely be the No. 4 seed in that scenario, hosting No. 5 seed Indian River in the opening round.
