Riverheads Picks Up First Win Down at James River

The Gladiators needed a confidence boost after their narrow lost to Rocktown and got it tonight with a decisive 56-40 road win over the James River Knights. Actually the game was not even that close as the Big Red jumped out in front early and led by as many as 26 in the second half. JR was able to whittle it down in the final few minutes by inserting a guy (number 24 is all I can tell you since there were no rosters available) who drained three long-range triples to close the gap. His sudden surge most likely left fans on both sides wondering "Why is he just now getting into the game?"

The Knight fans also got a charge out of their tiny little point guard (# 5) who did his best to harass Riverheads' ball-handlers, even though he stands about 5'2" at the most. He will be entertaining to watch when JR makes the return visit to Greenville on the 17th.

The Gladiators scored first tonight on an inside bucket from Grayson Ward. Af

A book of the glory days you might find interesting

The Days of Gold is a book about Pulaski County’s football program from 1974-2002, from the beginning of the program to the end of Joel Hicks’ days at the helm. The book starts with brief histories about the Dublin Dukes and Pulaski Orioles, the two schools who merged to become PCHS. Those two programs had lots of success in football. Being good at football didn’t start with the Cougars, it had been going on for a while before. The book covers the history of the program from the beginning in 1974 until 2002 when Joel Hicks retired. The book extensively talks about rival schools too and their rivalries with PC such as Salem, Patrick Henry, Cave Spring, William Fleming, Northside, EC Glass and more. It also includes the following:
- process of PCHS coming into being starting back in 1967
- Every game of every season is covered extensively, with stats for all games and seasons
- every score until 2023
- every roster of those years (1974-02)
- all time series marks with opponents
- Special tributes to Lee Cook and Kevin Crouse
- Chapter dedicated to Joel Hicks and his life up to him coming to PC in 1979
- Every single team photo from 1974-2002
- Over 100 pictures, most in color
- Tributes to the Marching Band, the cheerleaders and uniforms through the years, the 63 steps, the Cougar statue that was installed in 2008, Homecoming traditions, the Powder Puff game, Friday Football Extra, the Touchdown Classic, and the Spirit of Autumn
- A final tribute to the life and legacy of Joel Hicks
- Epilogue about the program after Joel Hicks up to 2023
- A list of former Cougar players and coaches that have passed away
- A season-by-season record of Joel Hicks’ career
- every state champion at each level from 1974-2002

The book is a little over 600 pages long and over 100 pictures. Several former players were interviewed as well to get information and personal experiences. It goes in depth for players who had great careers beyond high school like Gary Clark, Todd Grantham, Shayne Graham, Brandon Anderson, Randy Dunnigan and more.

Riverheads Routs Stonewall for Third Straight Win

It only took the Gladiators four seconds to take control tonight as senior guard J P Crawford scored on a driving lay-up off the tip and the Big Red never looked back in a dominating 70-22 road win over Stonewall Jackson. He would go on to score 10 points in the first quarter, which included two triples as the Big Red jumped out to a 26-9 lead. Joining him behind the arc were Will Gardner and Chase Donathan with two each, all in an action-packed first eight minutes.

After such a racehorse first quarter, the second was a totally different story as the early part at least resembled that other sport with the funny shaped ball. In one of the strangest plays of the night, Crawford was mugged on another lay up attempt but nothing was called. Well I shouldn't say "nothing" because the refs called a technical on him for protesting the no-call. Stonewall converted the two foul shots but ironically those were their only points of the quarter, as Riverheads closed out the half on an 11-0 run to take a 37-11 lead into the locker room. Henley Dunlap had a couple of fast break lay-ups, Donathan banked in his third triple, and Grayson Ward closed out the half with a nice basket in the lane.

After scoring only two points in the second quarter, things did not get any better as the hosts only managed four in the third period. Meanwhile Gardner dropped in his third triple and also hit all three foul shots when he was hacked on another attempt. The lead ballooned to an embarrassing 58-15 after three and set the running clock in motion.

The starters were pretty much through for the evening by that time, so the Gladiator points down the stretch mainly came from Joe George, Chris Dotson, and Jaxon Duff. Once again, for the third game in a row, the Gladiators had three players finish in double figures with two other guys almost making it. Crawford finished with 16, followed by Gardner with 15, Dunlap with 10, Donathan with 9, and George with 8. That kind of balance is no doubt preferred by Coach Weller as opposed to having to depend on one guy to control the scoring.

The Generals, much like Bath County on Monday, did not have serious big man threat, and although there are six seniors and six juniors on the roster, it was hard to tell who their team leader might be. The only bright spot for them this evening was a banked-in three pointer with about three seconds left. Otherwise the final would have been 70-19.

The Generals did manage a close win in the JV game. They built a 10 point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Riverheads rallied and cut it to four, before the home team held on for a 40-34 win. Eighth-grader Grant Fields had a nice game and may be a star of the future for the Generals.

These teams will meet again in Greenville over the weekend of December 27-28 as both the JV and varsity teams will take part in the Riverheads Holiday Tournament. Rappahannock County and Buffalo Gap will be the other two teams participating in that event.

But of much more urgency to Big Red fans will be this Friday night's trip to Rocktown. The varsity teams had a donnybrook in the game at Riverheads but the Gladiators have won three in a row since then, whereas the Raptors had a two-game losing streak going into tonight's home game with Charlottesville.

For anyone wishing to attend that one in Rocktown's brand new gym, be advised that the Raptors start their JV games at 5:30.

Preseason Class 3 Boys Hoops Top 10

Hop on in the discussion to get hype for the winter rolling. As always I apologize if I am not up to date on any big moves/transfers etc. This is solely meant to get a discussion going.

1. Northside
Back to back state champs, return state POY for senior season along with another first team all state selection. The three-peat is certainly in the cards.

2. Spotswood
This may be the Blazers best chance to win a state title since 1990...and that's saying a lot considering their rich history. I believe they return four starters including Cam Pacheco. Northside has had their number in the playoffs but if they can get over the hump in the state tournament they have a real shot.

3. Lake Taylor
Not sure how much they return but always a strong program that fell in the state finals last year. They will always be battle-tested with that Norfolk schedule.

4. James Monroe
As long as Makel Minor doesn't transfer out (I have no idea if he has or not) the Yellowjackets return him and a second-team all state selection in Michael Edwards to one of the best James Monroe teams in recent memory. Region 3B is always relatively week so would be shocked in JM isn't back in the state tournament.

5. BT Washington
Bookers return Zymareon Mitchell which should be more than enough to lead the Bookers to another successful season.

6. Tunstall
Raiders went 27-3 last year, two of those losses to Northside in the playoffs. Kobe Morrison is back and wouldn't be surprised if they amass 20+ wins in the regular season again.

7. Cave Spring
Always have to shoe in the Knights as a preseason top 10 team given the excellence of the program. Not as sure what they return but should compete with Northside as always, I believe they were relatively young last year so better experience will show.

8. Western Albemarle
Warriors have contended perennially in the Top 10 for years. They lose their frontcourt but return some key pieces from a year ago and they always reload. They handed Spotswood one of their two losses last season in the Region 3C championship.

9. Meridian
Mustangs had a really strong season last year and return a second team all stater in Daylen Martino.

10. Hopewell
No all-staters returning but the Blue Devils had a good season a year removed from a state championship appearance. Look for them to return to the state playoffs this season.
