Wouldnt Essex win the tiebreaker since they played colonial beach, who played Avalon, MD, resulting in 9 games for ratings purposes? I'm thinking this is tiebreaker #3, since neither rhs or essex have played or have common opponents

Why do you only have twelve teams. There are 16 that make the playoffs and no byes in the first round unless that has changed since last year

1A East is different this year in that only 12 teams make the playoffs with top 4 getting a bye. There are playoff brackets listed on here by VA preps rod, so u can see them

Wow,,,VHSL gets worse each year. How can one side of the bracket have 16 teams and the other side have 12. If you are the top West team you have to play an extra game and risk injury etc. Just when you think the VHSL cant possibly make the playoffs any more ridiculous, they do.

Actually I think that decision (to have 12 vs. 16 teams) was left up to each individual region and those two (1-A East and 4-A West) were the only two that voted to have just 12 teams. So you cannot blame the VHSL for that one.

You may be right on that. I'm not exactly sure who would get it

Sure you can. They shouldnt leave it up to the different groups. Either both sides of the bracket should have 16 or 12 teams. One or the other. You cant have the west teams playing more games than the east. It is just dumb. It would be like the NFL telling the the AFC they can decide how many teams to have in the playoffs. That makes no sense. They need to drop everyone back to 12 anyway since half of the teams are terrible and still make the playoffs, but you have to have both sides of the playoffs doing the same thing. VHSL has so botched all this conference BS and football playoffs it has become just silly. You have teams winning 2 games and making the playoffs.

I believe Keith Stone has the answer to the tiebreaker. According to the handbook the team that plays a team with an effective 9 game schedule shall be seeded ahead of a team whose opponents play a 10-game schedule. Page 133 of the Handbook under d)

This may be a dumb question but why doesn't the loss to Avalon count towards Colonial Beach?

Before LCA crashed the public school party, games against private schools wouldn't count towards a team's 10 games, so at the end of the season all of their power points would be divided by 9 instead of 10. I'm not sure if those rules have changed now that privates and publics are playing against each other for championships in the VHSL. If those old rules still apply then colonial beach would have played a 9 game schedule according to the vhsl but things may be different now.

So it sounds like RHS doesn't necessarily have the number one seed after all.........correct?
it looks like it all depends on how the colonial beach/avalon game is classified. If it is counts toward the ten games, then riverheads is number one, if it doesnt then essex is number one. I'm just not up to date due to LCA's changes this year so I can't say either way with 100 percent certainty at the moment

It doesn't count. Go look at the updated ratings on the VHSL website following last week's games and you will see Colonial Beach's record is listed as 3-5

So Essex will get the #1 seed then and play winner of Luray and Middlesex?

Only in-state private schools count for power points. Out of state games against privates do not count.

The vhsl can't tell individual regions what's best for them. The vhsl is more of a democratic body than the NFL with over 300 schools and many with no or dwindling budgets. The situation now is 100 percent better than it was, look at 5a, how many good teams would be left out of the playoffs under the old system. The vhsl isn't perfect but they shouldn't be blamed for everything.

That's why VHSL is a VERY poorly run Organization. VHSL would be better served if there was one Commissioner who ran the show state wide.

I could do a better job than is being done currently. I would put every region/school under same format. The road to state championships would be same for every school.

You'd also outlaw any offense but the spread and forbid teams from running. Lol.

Hey Guys, the VHSL needs to HELP you guys in the EAST by suggesting ways to get to a 16 team playoff format in football. Each district should present a strong case to the VHSL with your own format, and adopt it. This thing about getting a bye in the first round is not right. The West has a good format, with 16 teams. No one is complaining down here about the format. Guys, your school principals and AD's are the ones that have to start the action in their District meetings. Just my thoughts from the West.

I am with you brother. A commissioner along with a state wide board would be fine with me. They would have shared power and checks/balances to eliminate corruption. Just my opinion

The East had 16 teams the past several years so why change it. The VHSL makes rules on everything else as far as when you can practice, etc but allows the different regions to choose their own playoff structure. That is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. If the East decides they only want to have 8 teams and only play a couple games to make it to state is that OK? They came up with this assanine Conference set up but cant set an even format for football. Idiotic! IF you have two sides of a football championship they have to have the same playoff format. Otherwise it is not fair to the side playing more games. Again, IDIOTIC

If you look at the updated ratings for LCA, the game against Avalon is counted as a loss in the regular season. They also played another private out of state game in NC that is counted on their stats. Why do we have different rules for different schools? If LCA is getting to play in the VHSL playoff system, they have to use the same system the rest of us do. I don’t have a problem with LCA getting the points for out of state schools, but it should also apply to Colonial Beach and any other school. They better figure this one out quickly or lawsuits will soon follow…

I agree completely with you Xcross. I don't have a dog in your race, so I am just suggesting that your School principals have to start the process of change within the districts and regions in the EAST. Put the pressure on, my friend.

1A East should have 16 teams. VHSL should set policies, not regions.
Do you really think a 16 seed gone beat riverhead or Essex it a waste of time and a risk of injury. If you want your team to make the playoffs get better and make top 12 seed don't a teams hopes u p to play 1 extra game to get beat 70 to 0 I'm the first round

This post from metphin makes the most sense I have read today!

No team deserves a bye even if they go 10-0 average 70 points a game and is unescorted on. Byes suck. Last year a 16 beat a 1 in D3. Nothing wrong with seeds 13-16. Those who voted for 12 teams just have some personal agenda and like screwing 4 teams out of playoffs.

It's possible that, because their schedule was already set, that the VHSL made a one-year concession to them regarding those OOS games.

Obviously, this year (and possibly next) are unique circumstances.

Travel issues of teams getting blown out is why they voted to 12
