Football season is a little more than 4 months away but I was wondering just what does Magna Vista have coming back this year? I think the Piedmont will again be settled the week of the regular season between GW and Magna Vista. Both teams will be extremely young but talented. GW returns rising Junior QB Sam Branch, their entire O-line, CB/WR Henry Barley (who should get some D-1 looks), and Kaushaun Forrest who is probably the fastest RB in the Piedmont now that Jacqez is gone. Weber Harris will be another back to keep an eye on for GW. I also think that Tunstall and Franklin Co will be the two surprise teams this year. Franklin Co was very young this past season as they started a lot of sophomores and Tunstall will be much improved with Coach David Potts being in his 2nd season as the general. Tunstall has some very big and athletic kids in their program and their time is coming soon. Realistically, I don't see either beating MV or GW this year but I think those two teams will give both teams tough challenges. Opinions?

I don't have much to add here, but I hope you are right with Franklin Co. I guess they have nowhere to go but up, I just hope Coach Edwards can be successful there. I think it might take 3 or 4 years to get the program pointed in the right direction. I'd like to see them back to the 9-3 type season. When Carroll leaves the district, Salem will need to pick up another OOD opponent. FC is a local rivalry that would be a good fit if they are competitive and Salem plans to keep a local schedule. If FC continues to be below .500, it would be better to play a really good 3/4A instead. I think about anyone would be an improvement over Carroll Co. Some local teams that could be considered: Franklin Co, Magna Vista, GW-Danville, William Fleming, Lord Botetourt, Jefferson Forest, Brookville, Heritage, EC Glass, LCA, Rustburg, Liberty, and it's very unlikely but Glenvar might be a possibility.

I'd still like to see Salem use that extra non-district game to schedule a good 4A or 5A from another part of the state. A school like Broad Run, Tuscarora, or Hanover, for examples, or even a Salem vs. Salem matchup with the Sundevils. However, such a game - against any foe from a far-flung area - is still probably pretty unlikely.

Addressing the schools you mentioned, I'd be most enthusiastic about Magna Vista, Jefferson Forest, and Fleming, in that order. MV currently seems a sure bet for seven-plus wins, would bring a good crowd to Salem, and would offer a stiff challenge. Plus, they usually don't play any other teams on Salem's schedule (well, Byrd, sometimes), so there'd be no missing out on potential VHSL bonus points. JF will probably always be good under Christmas, though their support might be more up-and-down. Fleming seems like they HAVE to get better, and I feel like Salem should be playing both Roanoke City schools. Fleming's fan support could be problematic, especially in down years.

Franklin Co. could be a good pick up, when and if they ever get back on firm footing. That could be several years away. They are a traditional Spartan rival, and the Eagle faithful turn out pretty well in good years. I would be lukewarm towards each of Brookville, Heritage and LB. I'd put Glass, Rustburg and Liberty as even less desirable, as I don't see potential games with those teams as being competitive, and I don't see any of them bringing many fans, even in their better seasons. It should be obvious, but this is all just my opinion.

I would be quite displeased to see Salem pick up either LCA or GW, for varying reasons upon which I will decline to elaborate.

As for old foes Byrd and Northside, whenever Highfill decides to call it quits at Byrd could be a good time to look into switching that opponent. Despite the perception that "Byrd always plays Salem tough", the Terriers have prevailed just once in the last twelve meetings, and only three others have been as close as fourteen points. Northside should be guaranteed a spot on the Spartans' schedule every year.

As long as Salem remains 4A, I strongly doubt any 2A schools will appear on the schedule. I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea. If Glenvar seems like they can sustain a basement of six or seven wins, the potential gate alone might make that worth trying for two years. And I've always been intrigued by the potential Spartan war of Salem vs. Giles. Especially since, for thirty years, I've heard and read a lot of "Salem is scared to play Giles" remarks. So, by all means - let's see what would happen if we got these kids together! Don't think it will happen, but interest would probably be sky-high - initially, at least.

Hope you made it through the winter in good stead, mike!

I agree with you on everything you said Spartan. I would also like to see Salem use the extra OOD game to play a team from out of the area. I'd like to see a Loudoun Co school- Broad Run, Briar Woods, Stone Bridge, or Tuscarora. John Champe had nice facilities and people, so they would be a good possibility as they move up to 5A soon- along with Woodgrove for the same reasons.

I wouldn't mind seeing William Byrd replaced on the schedule either. They have certainly provided for some interesting games over the years, but I think most years they aren't a game that offers you a consistent challenge.

I think Magna Vista would be at the top of my list for potential opponents. JF would be a close 2nd as long as they have Coach Christmas and fix their seating situation. Brookville travels well and are usually a good opponent. Lord Botetourt has been really good lately, but Salem played them 20+ times and Botetourt only won once.

Fleming & Franklin Co would be good opponents when they get back to winning 6+games a year.

Other Seminole teams don't seem to be a likelihood at this point. GW probably won't be scheduled since they are a likely opponent in the playoffs consistently.

I don't think 2A teams will be considered, but Glenvar or Giles would be exciting.

Thanks for your nice comments, I hope to continue making it out to the games as it gives me great joy. Lacrosse has started up and I want to make it out to some games this year. I'm just glad the cold weather season seems to be past us.

I forgot about JF's stadium situation. Yes, that definitely needs to be addressed.

I''d definitely like to see that. I agree, I think they are a 3-4 win team this year and hopefully in a couple years they will be back playing competitive football. They have a very good coach in Edwards, who is a Salem guy. IMHO, it really gets no better than a Salem guy in charge of a program. They just know how to win...THE RIGHT WAY! I'd definitely love to see GW and Salem start playing. When I played for GW's middle school team in 07, we played Andrew Lewis in Salem Stadium and they beat the breaks off of us. It's just great exposure. I think Anderson is taking GW's program is taking in the right direction, but in order to play with the big boys in late November, you have to play the big boys in September. GW has some very very good athletes coming up,don't know if there are any Ramseys, but they are going to be good so a better schedule is going to do them justice, but I'm a fan of GW somehow joining the Seminole. Looking at Salem's schedule, I love the Amherst/Salem game, the Salem/Northside rivalry, the Salem/Byrd rivalry, the Salem/Pulaski rivalry...That's why Salem is battle tested come December and it usually takes the state champion/runner up in order to beat those guys. This year I see Salem and Amherst playing twice and possibly Pulaski and Salem playing twice. It's really going to be an exciting season.

Mag's philosophy seems to work. He does not want to schedule those tougher teams. He can get past most of the decent teams like Amherst and Northside. They should, especially the last few years. He builds depth and avoids a lot of injury. Starters get their rest when they coast. High seed. Easy road to the semi's.

No disrespect to the 2015 squad. They played 2 teams most thought they couldn't beat in JF and LT. But they had the Coaching and the attitude. The opponents were out Coached in each. The attitude is that THEY were the intimidators. Opponents did not recover.

No Reason to think that won't happen again in 2016. Definitely Spartans as them number one pick to start the season. Just like the Phoebus of old.

Let's not forget John Champe was on the road and a number of people thought Salem wouldn't beat them either. (I think you were in this group if my recollection serves me correctly)

Little bit late to the thread but I would absolutely LOVE to see Salem play Giles or Glenvar. Probably a massive turnout for either team. Hope it happens.
