2A State championship game: Appomattox vs Robert E Lee

Lee high has very good front seven on defense and really good backs to go along with quarterback be very tough game. Appo doesn’t come ready and focused could be upset in the making

Anybody got updated links from this season? I tried to find some on RE LEE but couldnt last night. Wanna see O they bring to the field.

re lee have any football championships? I know they have in other sports. This may make them hungry like it did us in 2015

More talented team: RE Lee

More experienced team: Appo

Better coached team: Appo

Give me RE Lee by 10. I would love to see Appo make it three in a row though!

No doubt they good, nobody makes it this far without being a quality team ready to hold up a trophy.

Lee has a bunch of game recaps on YouTube. Very well done too. I wish all schools had the capabilities or man power to put that kind of stuff out there.

Coach Girolmo isn’t some new kid on the block coach though.

This is his first HC gig, but he had Liberty averaging 40+ ppg as their OC before being hired by Lee.

If Lee has any championships they would be from many many years ago. I’m fairly certain they don’t. For many years they have been known as a basketball powerhouse (state champions last year) and while they were always atop the 3A Valley District they routinely lacked discipline needed to advance in the playoffs.

That all seems to have changed under Coach G though.

It should definitely be a battle. Appo has been there 3 years in a row now. Lee has never been this far.

Hoping our district brings back two state titles

I just watched the YouTube on them and guys let be the first one to say I just don't see it ! Appo has two blowouts in the finals and I see another one here!!!!!!! Just don't see that team being able to stop Appo and the defense has gotten so much better !! Was suprized that poquoson was so small and just not that good . Question if lee has played any thing comparable to Appo !! Appo by a lot I think !!!

Glad I'm not the only one that thought Poquoson looked small. I even went to their Hudl page to look up the lineman. Of the ones listed, they are as small as they look. Maybe they are really strong have have great technique. I don't know.

Lee does look very athletic, and this is the only video I have seen of either Lee or Poquoson, so this may not be an informed opinion, but if the championship game is close, I'll be surprised.

This is the smallest team we have had at Poquoson in 20 years, maybe 25, and I'm serious, but........don't let the size fool you. They are very, very, very strong, but there is no doubt about it, we have one of the smallest football teams at Poquoson is probably a quarter of a century for 2017. What surprised me most with the Lee vs Poquoson game was the lineplay of Lee. I will be honest in that I thought we would handle Lee on the line of scrimmage. Boy, was I wrong. Lee's front 7 is very, very, very good and the QB is as the late Stuart Scott would say, "as cool as the other side of the pillow." Great props to Lee who beat us fair and square. No officials, no fans, no incidences, or any excuses from this fan. Poquoson lost because Lee won, period. Poquoson will be slightly better next year though. I promise you that. We have a wealth of talent coming up for at least the next 7-8 years from a crazy good youthful bunch and our junior high teams are very, very skilled. The future is bright for the Islanders for the next 7-8 years, and that even starts with next year.

The key for Lee will be the same as Union. Is the moment to big? That means....do you let Appo seize the momentum early with either a great special teams play, or a long bust out play, or a Lee turnover (Appo takeaway). Appo is notorious for taking the momentum early and throat punching the opponent early, and sometimes the opponent can recover and make it close (like Union) but the damage is to much to overcome. If Lee avoids this and the first quarter ends without Appo leading the game, it's a contest that either team can win. Lee has the talent and skillset to win this game. I'm not saying they will, but they have the players and coach to win the game. Sometimes, a team is outmatched and usually with Appo, they are just overwhelming and so much better than the opponent that it doesn't matter. If the opponent plays a perfect game, they are still losing by 21-28 points. Lee is the type of team that is NOT outmatched regarding talent and skillset. But again, is the moment to big? For Appo, it's certainly not.

Can I just say...I watched this whole video....WHAT A FREAKING GAME!!!!!!

Would have loved to be at RE Lee for that one. Shout out to both teams! Yes....Poq was small but they had heart!

Im going to say it. RE LEE qb is a stud! I love the shiftiness and hip movement. He has a arm too. About to watch some more vids. That is a dynamic team. I didnt see much from RB in this video. Maybe it was just the play calling.

Just watched all the vids by RE LEE. YES!!! They are contenders!!! They have speed all over and a recipe to beat Appo. I know that is unpopular by my Appo fans, but They have a great D Line. Great QB and solid RBs with speed. I know the Raiders have what it takes to win but this one is not going to be a walk in the park.

I watched enough film on Lee against Buffulo Gap on YouTube, they have a very talented Offense and are quick, our D is quick also... Thing I saw was Buffulo Gap scored a lot on them and Lee had to match each score which they did to come out with the win. I see Appo O much more diverse then Buffulo Gaps O.... Now that the yrar has progressed Im sure Lees D has tightened uo, I can see that with the scores of the Luray games.... I see this as a good match up and may the best team win. I think it comes down to who plays smarter ball and which coaches toll the dice. I know Coach Smith is pretty good at dice. Lot of speed on both sides of the ball. Can't wait... WOOOOO ! Lets get it Raiders ! #Chasing3

That BG game was early in the season and BG offense was VERY good, just didn't have the D to match from the game I saw. Until the playoff game, all of their losses were close. Some of gaps players were very athletic.

I dont think the Gap game can tell us much. First being early in the season and 2nd they don't run anything close to what Appomattox does. I would think the closest thing to Appomattox for Lee opponents would be Central Woodstock

Gotta say Appo fans I love your passion for your team good luck to you Saturday I got to pull for Lee though,

After looking at the video and seeing Appo in person I think Appo by 20. But what I think means zero

no lie i swear poquoson looked like middle school i thought it was a prank video man o man they looked real small and Unathletic lee looks alot better on grass but it was a highlight video how the hell did poquoson take them to ot???

"how the hell did poquoson take them to ot???"

The short answer is Poquoson scored as many points as R. E. Lee in regulation.

You know the old saying, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Poquoson has never really had what anyone would refer to as a very big team, but they are strong, physical, and gritty, and are not afraid to mix it up with anyone.

I liked what I seen of Lee's offense. I've thought for years that if your team had an athletic & SMART quarterback then the pistol set with read options and rpo's would be almost impossible for any high school defense to shut down. It all falls on the quarterback though and from what I seen from Lee's QB on film it looks like he's more than capable of running it to its full effectiveness.

Exactly. They had to be doing something right to stand toe to toe through 4 quarters and 1 OT.

AdvocateofMany434:
RE Lee does not have any State Championships in football post 1970, but there have historically been great basketball teams who have won state championships (both girls and boys), as well as good athletes in the school year in and year out fielding competitive teams for the other sports (track, and more recently soccer come to mind). The playoff system was different pre-1970, so only the really big schools had a playoff. The rest of us played the regular season games and called it a season. The 1962 team was really good and they went undefeated in the regular season and years later the administration hung a banner for that team that says State-Champions, but they didn't actually play in a State Championship game (edit: they hung the banner for the 63 team oddly enough). The '62 team had one close game with Parry McCluer (19-13 win), but the average score for the other games was 39 to 5.

There have been some other good Lee teams over the years. The 60s was the best decade for RE Lee football which is unfortunate as there was no playoff for them and most of their accomplishments are swept under the rug and forgotten about. They had teams go:
7-2 (1961)
9-0 (1962)
9-1 (1963)
8-1 (1964)
7-1-1 (1965)
8-0-1 (1967)
7-3 (1969)

The 90's, 00's and this decade have been pretty competitive years as well, although basketball has had more success. Lee has always historically been thought of as a basketball school and a lot of that credit goes to bball coaching legend Paul Hatcher. The rumor was that Lee athletes played great football until the basketballs started bouncing in November, and then they were ready to get indoors and hit the hardwood. The "streak" teams (the 85 game win streak bball teams) in particular had the talent to advance in the playoffs, but they were anxious to get to basketball as those were some really great bball teams. Here are some of the top records from the football teams since the 90s:
11-2 (1990, second state semi appearance)
8-3 (1994)
7-4 (1999)
10-1 (2000, this team went undefeated in the regular season, beating state runner up TA, but lost in R1 of playoffs to Handley by 3 points...this team really had the potential to win a 'ship but had an early exit)
7-4 (2001)
7-3 (2004)
7-4 (2005, beat eventual State Champ TA in the regular season, but lost in R1 of playoffs to them)
10-2 (2006)
8-4 (2007)
9-3 (2008)
8-4 (2009)
7-4 (2010)
7-5 (2011)
7-4 (2012)
8-4 (2013)
9-4 (2015)
13-1 so far this year

The 70's, 80's, and 90's had a couple pretty good teams, but also some that were middle of the pack and below. Some of the top records for the 70s & 80s are:
7-3 (1970)
7-3 (1974)
9-3 (1977, went to Lee's first state semi),
9-1-1 (1980)

Coach G and his staff have done an amazing job with this year's team, keeping them locked in and focused. Staying locked in and focused during the whole season was an Achilles heel for Lee football over the years. This team has improved each week, which has also been something new for Lee teams. I have tons of respect for what his staff has done on and off the field. I hope they can pull it out this weekend but I am proud of this group either way.

When Lee went into the locker room at halftime up 14-0 on Poquoson, I thought they'd pull away in the second half to the tune of 28-7 or 35-7 as they have been a pretty good second half team all season. Poquoson made some great adjustments after halftime and really played well in the second half. They played with a fire and intensity that reminded me of a dog with it's back against the wall. They could have won that game last Saturday and it would have been deserved. They are a good team and they know how to battle.

Lee has not faced anyone like Appomattox. Going off strength of schedule: Lee has probably faced comparable competition week in and week out this year, but Appomattox has faced the best team overall (Heritage).

Lee will be matched athletically for the first time this season, which has been an advantage for them all year. Lee has played some teams where the other team maybe had the best 1-2 athletes on the field, but the Leemen still had the most athleticism as an overall group. Lee will need to play lights out to win this week. It can be done, but I have Appo as the favorite. If Lee plays like they did vs Central and Luray (part 2), it should be a competitive game. If they play like they did in the second half vs Poquoson, Appomattox will win.

no lie i swear poquoson looked like middle school i thought ma o man they looked real small andUnathletic

My brother, LOL, I can't tell you how many times I've heard that from the Poquosons opponents over the years. "You guys are so slow and unathletic, how do you beat us." That's classic Poquoson. Goochland fans said the same thing to me after the game. Poquoson kids have incredible football IQ and discipline, great position and sense of field space, and we are as well coached as anyone. ED can flat out coach. If you go by a clip of Poquoson or comparing seeing one team play and then Poquoson play, and then try to compare Poquoson to that team, it never works. Even when we are out talented (probably 10 out of our 13 games this year) we seem to almost always be in the gsme, somehow, someway, and usually we win them.

I think it will be a great game with two awesome QB's going heads up. If Appo plays to their potential for 4 quarters they will be ok. If they are not focused and take for granted that they are in the State Championship for the 3rd time they may be in trouble.
Should make for a very entertaining game!

After the Union game which was a very good game the coaches huddle really addressed what has to be worked on. Union also made some eyes bulge out with our players and taught them a lesson they will learn from and correct this saturday. They will be bringing it to the line and taking it to Lee hard. They know they have to play all 4 quarters like it's the first second of the game, no mercy. The younger players backed off and played conservative in 2nd half. Hey thats kids but they see now how that is a major mistake. They will stay strong all 4 qtrs saturday.

Haven't Lee and Appomattox played during the regular season within the past few years? I thought I remembered that, but I could have them confused with another team from this area.

I had to look that up, because I was pretty sure you were correct.

So, here it is....

In 2014, Lee played Appomattox and lost 39-28 in the 3rd game of the season at home.

Both teams finished with 6-5 records that year.

They also played the year before - 2013 - in also the 3rd game of the season at Appomattox.

Lee won that game 28-21

The Leemen finished 8-4....Appo finished 7-5.
