2A State championship game: Appomattox vs Robert E Lee

When Lee went into the locker room at halftime up 14-0 on Poquoson, I thought they'd pull away in the second half to the tune of 28-7 or 35-7 as they have been a pretty good second half team all season. Poquoson made some great adjustments after halftime and really played well in the second half. They played with a fire and intensity that reminded me of a dog with it's back against the wall. They could have won that game last Saturday and it would have been deserved. They are a good team and they know how to battle.

Lee has not faced anyone like Appomattox. Going off strength of schedule: Lee has probably faced comparable competition week in and week out this year, but Appomattox has faced the best team overall (Heritage).

Lee will be matched athletically for the first time this season, which has been an advantage for them all year. Lee has played some teams where the other team maybe had the best 1-2 athletes on the field, but the Leemen still had the most athleticism as an overall group. Lee will need to play lights out to win this week. It can be done, but I have Appo as the favorite. If Lee plays like they did vs Central and Luray (part 2), it should be a competitive game. If they play like they did in the second half vs Poquoson, Appomattox will win.
If they play like they played Luray in the first game, they lose big,if they play like they played against Luray in the regional finals they can win.

I didn’t realize that Alger Pugh coached RE Lee....he did a heck of a job at GW Danville back in the day.

AdvocateofMany434:
RE Lee does not have any State Championships in football post 1970, but there have historically been great basketball teams who have won state championships (both girls and boys), as well as good athletes in the school year in and year out fielding competitive teams for the other sports (track, and more recently soccer come to mind). The playoff system was different pre-1970, so only the really big schools had a playoff. The rest of us played the regular season games and called it a season. The 1962 team was really good and they went undefeated in the regular season and years later the administration hung a banner for that team that says State-Champions, but they didn't actually play in a State Championship game. The '62 team had one close game with Parry McCluer (19-13 win), but the average score for the other games was 39 to 5.

There have been some other good Lee teams over the years. The 60s was the best decade for RE Lee football which is unfortunate as there was no playoff for them and most of their accomplishments are swept under the rug and forgotten about. They had teams go:
7-2 (1961)
9-0 (1962)
9-1 (1963)
8-1 (1964)
7-1-1 (1965)
8-0-1 (1967)
7-3 (1969)

The 90's, 00's and this decade have been pretty competitive years as well, although basketball has had more success. Lee has always historically been thought of as a basketball school and a lot of that credit goes to bball coaching legend Paul Hatcher. The rumor was that Lee athletes played great football until the basketballs started bouncing in November, and then they were ready to get indoors and hit the hardwood. The "streak" teams (the 85 game win streak bball teams) in particular had the talent to advance in the playoffs, but they were anxious to get to basketball as those were some really great bball teams. Here are some of the top records from the football teams since the 90s:
11-2 (1990, second state semi appearance)
8-3 (1994)
7-4 (1999)
10-1 (2000, this team went undefeated in the regular season, beating state runner up TA, but lost in R1 of playoffs to Handley by 3 points...this team really had the potential to win a 'ship but had an early exit)
7-4 (2001)
7-3 (2004)
7-4 (2005, beat eventual State Champ TA in the regular season, but lost in R1 of playoffs to them)
10-2 (2006)
8-4 (2007)
9-3 (2008)
8-4 (2009)
7-4 (2010)
7-5 (2011)
7-4 (2012)
8-4 (2013)
9-4 (2015)
13-1 so far this year

The 70's, 80's, and 90's had a couple pretty good teams, but also some that were middle of the pack and below. Some of the top records for the 70s & 80s are:
7-3 (1970)
7-3 (1974)
9-3 (1977, went to Lee's first state semi),
9-1-1 (1980)

Coach G and his staff have done an amazing job with this year's team, keeping them locked in and focused. Staying locked in and focused during the whole season was an Achilles heel for Lee football over the years. This team has improved each week, which has also been something new for Lee teams. I have tons of respect for what his staff has done on and off the field. I hope they can pull it out this weekend but I am proud of this group either way.
The 2008 team finished 10-2. That was Dae'Quan Scott's senior season. Lee finished the regular season 9-1, then defeated Liberty-Bedford in the D3 Region III semifinals, and lost to unbeaten Brookville (Logan Thomas QB) in the final.

Scott had a record breaking season, even though in the final regular season game he got hurt on Lee's third offensive play, and missed the rest of that game. Here are his stats from the JMU profile page.

"As a Robert E. Lee High School senior accounted for 47 touchdowns, rushing for 35, throwing for eight, and returning three kickoffs and one punt for scores...ran 176 times for 2241 yards, an average of 12.7 per rush, and threw for 703 yards."

I mention that because Jayden Williams has accounted for 49 touchdowns this season (27 pass, 22 run).

Is #58 for Lee being recruited by anyone? It was either 58 or 56, can't remember, but man oh man, did this guy explode off the ball and create major problems with Poquoson's defensive line. I think as little as Poquoson is, Lee is BIG. Sounds like a simple and stupid statement, but the point I'm making is......Lee is BIG. It was noticeable at the game, and I think Lee may have been bigger than Southampton in my opinion. Southampton is, and was, always huge up front, but I think Lee was bigger, and the biggest team we've faced. As small as Poquoson looks in the video, much of this is attributable to the giant ism of Lee. One heck of a ball game on Saturday boys.

Haven't Lee and Appomattox played during the regular season within the past few years? I thought I remembered that, but I could have them confused with another team from this area.
Yes, we played in 2013, 2014, but that was under a long time coach there. This coach has only been there 3 years.

I'm glad you mentioned that as I remember them only losing 2 games that year (TA on a Monday night as the other loss) but the record shows as 9-3 in some places and 10-2 in others. On maxpreps they changed the Fort Defiance victory to a Lee High forfeit, and the guy on swvasports has the record at 9-3 as well, while vhsl-reference has it as 10-2 (which is what I thought). I thought maybe I missed something on the forfeit and just went worst case scenario at 9-3. Is that forfeit legit? I didnt remember anything about it and noticed it looking back today after double checking the standings.

I don't recall a forfeit. I had a special connection to that team so I followed them closely and keep some newspaper clippings. The final Southern Valley standings show Lee at 4-0 in the five-team district. Fort Defiance finished 0-4. I also did a Google search for 'Dae'Quan Scott Leemen football' and found a Roanoke Times Football playoff capsules dated November 13, 2008. It shows Lee's record at 9-1 before the Liberty game.

I remember the Fort game, which was a blowout, but I'm not sure if the forfeit happened after the season was over or if it is just inaccurate. I'd like to check with Coach Tibbs and find out for sure what the deal is, as I'm with you in that the forfeited game in the standings (on those two sites) against Fort was new to me, but I did worst case scenario in the post just in case, although I should have starred it with both records due to the discrepancy.

Lee got robbed in that TA loss as well. I remember a very poor 15 yarder being called on them late that put TA into field goal range

I guess the VHSL wants the championship game to be a like a dance recital.
I guess they do lol. In 2015 against Clarke noise makers were allowed. I have never heard anything where that has been a problem at Salem. The Salem stadium staff said it was not against their rules and some said it was not a vhsl rule either. I have not been able to confirm either in the course of 12 months.

Not sure how accurate this is as I think it reads 1983 3 -6-1. They lost 1 game that year to Rustburg and then lost to Martinsville in region final. Appo was #1 team in state going into playoffs. Not sure sure about Bragg years as that looks off also.

Remember that 1983 would have been Fall 1983 / Spring 1984 so the year you are talking was Fall 1982/ Spring 1983 or 1982 (9-2-0) which matches your memory lol.

Hey pizzza, I know you have some familiarity with the history of Lee sports. Do you know anything about the R E Lee victory over Fort Defiance being changed to an R E Lee forfeit for loss and a Fort Defiance forfeit for win? Maxpreps and Bluefield Researcher on swvasports.com each have that game being listed as a forfeit in their final standings.

I don't put a ton of stock in Maxpreps so I didn't think much initially, but Bluefield researcher on swvasports.com having the game listed as a forfeit as well made me think there's possibly something to it; like the victory was changed/voided for some reason AFTER the season was completed, because it was never mentioned during that season (at least to me and 85straight). During the season, the record was listed as 10-2 and that's what I always thought it was, until seeing the other 2 sites having that forfeit for loss listed in the final standings.

That was new to me as well - had never heard that before, but I can certainly look into it.

I just checked another piece of info. There is a guy on this board who was putting together all the records for all the area teams (as well as teams from all over the state), and he too has the Fort Defiance game listed as a Lee forfeit for loss. His note says: "RE Lee won the game 40-18, but later forfeited due to ineligible player."

Thanks for letting me know - I had no idea this happened - I guess it just was never corrected in all the various websites/publications.

Never heard that business about a Lee forfeit. Interesting.

The noisemaker business puzzles me. I don't have anything I would bring anyway and they don't either bother or impress me at a game, but high school football being what it is, how do you determine when a game is "too loud?" Seems like an awfully subjective thing to try and regulate to me. You wouldn't try to do that to a rock concert.

I yell louder than any cowbell. I have Army PLDC at Ft. Jackson SC to thank for that. I do an obnoxious Rebel Yell too. My apologies to Mr. Walken, but less cowbell.

I remember both gamea very well! They beat us at our house then we beat them in theirs

Weather forecast starting to look ugly again. Wonder how that is going to play out.

I just wanted to get on here and wish both teams all the best !
Both programs have a lot to be proud of ! Great athletes, coaching and fan support !
For Appo, going for 3 in a row is something to be admired and respected, and for R.E. Lee, making it to the state championship game is a tremendous accomplishment !
I hope the game is injury free for the kids and all the fans traveling to and from the game have a safe trip !
Good luck to both !!

Excellent, excellent very nice. R E Lee has some great young men on their team. From some articles I have read and video's watched they have a very positive winning attitude. I actually think they stole the attitude from Appo lol. Great bunch of young men and I hope all of them do well sunday.

They banned the noise makers last year as well. Didn't stop the Richlands fans from sneaking in cowbells and pop bottles with rocks though. Lol.

And a whistle I might add that they were blowing at the beginning of the game that had our boys (quiting at the the whistle). Our coach had to call a time out and talk to the officials about it.
I'm sure that isnt the norm for that school but that was dirty for whoever it was.

Two years ago the allowed bells and stuff. I know I rung the devil out of mine against Clarke Co.
