Haven't seen any scores or teams about the east so far. Whose looking like state contenders? West has LB, MV, Heritage, Brookville, I'm sure there's a few more but anyone else has opinion after 2-3 games?

Phoebus will be in the title hunt this year (and every year). From what I saw they blew out Menchville 66-7 Saturday, and they are undefeated. For Phoebus to score that many points on offense is VERY scary because when I think about the Phantom's, I think defensive low scoring games and they grind your offense too death. I say Phoebus will be in the title game this year representing the East. Honestly, I would take Phoebus and give everyone else the field year in and out that they at least make the title game especially if 3A doesn't cross-bracket. That game of MV and Phoebus last year should have been the state title game.

Hopewell will be a tough out for anyone in the east

I would have to take Hopewell. Hopewell has so many weapons and they are likely going to play angry after letting the game at Powhatan slip away in the final seconds. Hanover is good and Cheatham is special, but I will take Hopewell in a close one.

In the 2 games I've seen Hopewell play they really struggle stopping the run. Tabb was able to run all night and Powhatan did the same thing run, run, run. IMO Hopewell's "D" is just a little small but have good speed at DB positions. If they don't stop the run Cheatham is going to have a field day. The same for Hanover problems up front stopping the run, yes it will be close but I'm going with Cheatham at home.

Hopewell will be interesting come playoff time. They might have a 5-5 or even 4-6 record, and be a 6 or 7 seed. But they will be battle tested. They scrimmaged Heritage and Monacan. Powhatan and Hanover out of district and then Dinwiddie, Matoaca, Dale, & Meadowbrook in district. If the aren't too banged up they might be able to make a run similar to last year.

I have seen Hopewell in the playoffs the last two years. When they don't make mistakes, they are deadly. But they seem to make a lot more mistakes than a team of their talent should.

I agree. In a general sense, I think team discipline is part of the issue. Not a behavioral thing, just a tendency to divert from basics and team strategy. Last year was not as bad, but during the 2014 season they were all over the board with focus and effort.

Having said this, you just have to know that the Blue Devils have one primary goal tonight, DON'T LET CHEATHAM BEAT US! If they can follow that game plan, they can win. But, Cheatham can basically win the game with his sheer willpower. They have to flex but not break. Clayton is going to get 100 to 150 yards even when you basically shut him down. He can hurt you with his passing ability if you bet the house on stopping his running. Stop him when you can, limit the damage when you can't. Also imperative is to be aggressive with your pass coverage. Cheatham will pull it down and run rather than force a pass into coverage. It' important to lay a lick on the receivers ever chance you can. The Hanover receiving core is not that strong, so if you can get them to short arm a couple of passes, you can change how Cheaham will operate.

Phoebus is stacked on defense this year. Probably best defense I've seen them with since 2010 team. On offense they have like 10 options. The team is focused and I'd be beyond surprised if someone in 3A beats them this year.

If cross bracketing was to allow it to happen, we could see two 3a championship games this year. Phoebus vs Lord Botetourt as a semi, and then the winner and anybody. But both will probably be one seeds, meaning they meet in the final, barring an upset.

looking at max preps Phoebus opponents are a combined 5-15, the only team with winning record is bethel at 3-2. Just saying...

Phoebus will take each game one at a time. The kids at Phoebus are buying into Coach Blunt and his "as long as we have one more point than the other team when the clock hits all zeros" mentality. Magna Vista taught us a lot about humility and being humble last year because many of us fans expected Phoebus to have an easier time last year in 3A. This year's Phoebus team is much tougher and way more physical than last year.

You guys were really confident last year that Phoebus would destroy everyone with some of yalls post.

Well that was last year. Phoebus is only concerned about what they can control this year.

Phoebus is a different team with the young QB. The defense is good and they have athletes everywhere this year. The scary part is that this is a Junior heavy team. They will be a tough out, and if they play up to their abilities I can't forsee them coming up short this year.....

Actually the starting QB is a senior but this is his first year starting but he got hurt in the win over Warwick. Based on the backup's performance on last week, the senior could be watching for a while.
