Saturday's battle between the 2013
6A state champions, Centreville, and the undefeated group from the 757,
Ocean Lakes was a classic. The Dolphins offense got off to a slow
start against an attacking Wildcats defense but Ocean Lakes began to
find some rhythm as the contest progressed. Ocean Lakes established a
two touchdown lead midway through the final quarter before Centreville
rallied back to force overtime. After the Wildcats failed to score on
the opening possession of the extra frame, the Dolphins claimed the
state championship on their very first offensive play to end a
thrilling contest in dramatic fashion.

Keys to Victory

Stick to the Script

The
Dolphins like to gamble and after a failed onside kick to open the
contest and three drives that netted eight yards in the opening
quarter, most coaches may have considered changing their scheme a bit.
Dolphins head coach Chris Scott never considered it, however, and
instead continued to pound the ball on the ground with his running game
and repeatedly lined up on fourth down with his offensive package
regardless of the situation.

The philosophy paid off to the tune
of 405 yards on offense which included a school record 267 rushing
yards by Arizona State commit, Jaason Lewis. The Dolphins senior
scored three touchdowns in the contest including a 53 yard dash on
fourth and four for the Ocean Lakes offense midway through the final
quarter of the game.

Never wavering from his overall approach
proved to be a valuable lesson learned by the Dolphins players on the
roster following a wild end to regulation that saw the Wildcats
completely swing the tide of momentum. Despite their woes late, the
Ocean Lakes team felt that if they did what they were supposed to, they
would achieve victory. That frame of mind paid off when Lewis ran into
the left corner of the endzone on the Dolphins first offensive play of
overtime to seal the win.

Play as a Team

With
the amount of talent on the field at UVA on Saturday afternoon, it may
have been easy for individuals to forget the reason they made it this
far. The Dolphins alone, have several players that will be moving on
to play football at the next level. It was apparent during the
contest, that both squads players knew they weren't going to be able to
achieve the ultimate goal in high school alone, regardless of their
individual talent level.

While Jaason Lewis led the way for the
Dolphins in the ground attack, the team utilized quarterback Brendan
O'Neil and T.J. Griffin in the rushing attack as well to prevent the
Wildcats from keying on one particular ball carrier. That approach
combined with the determination and effort along the offensive line
allowed Ocean Lakes to find success on offense against a stubborn
defense after the slow start.

Defensively, the Dolphins had two
players that finished with double digit tackles against the Centreville
attack and 13 different players that were in on stops during the event.
Jamal Spence and Julien Spence each recorded sacks and the camaraderie
on both sides of the ball led to the Dolphins completing the 15-0
season by earning the victory in their closest contest of the year.

Cashing In

There's
always would haves, could haves, should haves but the bottom line is
that when presented with opportunities, teams have to find a way to
convert. While there were many different variables that came into play
on Saturday afternoon, the Dolphins took advantage of their scoring
chances while the Wildcats left a few opportunities on the table.

Ocean
Lakes journeyed into the endzone on four different occasions against
the Wildcats defense and finished with three touchdowns and a field
goal in their chances. Conversely, the Centreville offense found
themselves inside their opponents 20 yard line five times and only came
away with points on two of the trips.

The Wildcats recovered on
one of those instances when they forced a fumble late in the second
half and then converted a touchdown prior to intermission to take a
10-7 lead. Another, however, ended with a missed field goal attempt
that almost immediately resulted in an Ocean Lakes touchdown. That
swing in momentum allowed the Dolphins to take a two score lead and
rather than fighting for overtime, the Wildcats very well could have
been fighting for the victory.

Key Players

Jaason Lewis, Ocean Lakes...In
his final game on the roster for Ocean Lakes, Lewis had the biggest
high school game of his career. The 6-foot-3, 240 pound tank rushed 26
times for 267 yards, an average of 10.3 yards per carry. In addition,
Lewis reached the endzone three times including a game winning 10 yard
sprint on the Dolphins first offensive play of overtime.

Jamal Spence, Ocean Lakes...The
senior linebacker led a defensive uniit that held the Centreville
offense to 4.5 yards per carry and less than 10 yards per pass
completion. The stats may not seem to be the most dominant but against
an offense that averaged nearly 42 points per contest prior to the
state championship game, the efforts were huge. Spence finished with
11 solo tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and one sack. The sack came on a
Wildcats fourth and goal opportunity that left Centreville short of the
endzone.

Charles Tutt, Centreville...The
5-foot-10, 175 pound receiver finished the day with four big receptions
for 105 yards and two touchdowns. The first offensive score came on a
14 yard pass from AJ Turner at the end of the first half on a halfback
pass and the second tied the contest late in the fourth quarter. The
80 yard reception by Tutt tied the contest at 24 bringing the Wildcats
back from a two touchdown deficit to force the extra period.

Extra Points

Both
of these teams deserve praise for their efforts not only on Saturday,
but for the season as a whole. Ocean Lakes dominated the competition
753-169 this season en route to a perfect season and the 6A State
Championship. The win helped the team bring home the trophy after
falling short in 2012 and gives the team high expectations for next
year, despite the loss of several top senior players.

Centreville
battled through many adverse situations this season to earn their trip
back to the state title game after winning the championship in 2013.
The Wildcats fought injuries throughout the year and also had other
factors that came up unexpected throughout the season. The ability for
the team to overcome the obstacles that were in their way to make the
journey back to Charlottesville this season perfectly resembles their
developments of young men both on and off the football field.

Don't want to say much other than I thought these two teams were evenly matched and the score at the end of the fourth quarter showed that. Both teams made their plays and it did start out as strong defensive effort by both teams. Some of the calls throughout the game by OL made you wonder, but it all worked out for them in the end.

Play of the game was Ferrick hitting Tutt on the 80 yard touchdown pass to tie the game after being down two touchdowns in the fourth. Given the amount of time they had left, a lot of teams would not have been able to make that happen but Centreville did. I really did not think at any point in the game they were going to be able to hit Tutt on that long throw down the middle against OL secondary, but Ferrick placed it perfectly where only Tutt could get it.

Can't go wrong with an overtime state championship game, definitely one of the best in recent years.
