A Shout Out

First, we had the pleasure of meeting and enjoying the company of the new GW-Danville AD, Mancino Craighead. We joked and carried on together over a hotdog or two, and swapped a few funny war stories. It was great to meet you and I wish you well as you tackle the challenges thrown at all Athletic Directors.

And it was so good to see Chuck Vipperman and his crew again. What a class act they are. Very professional, yet extremely funny. It’s a shame that this is our last year of playing each other. Guys, we enjoyed your company and you are welcome to come back anytime you would like.

The very young Eagles will be fine. They played with heart and grit and never quit. I wish them well and look forward to seeing them get their home field finished sooner rather than later.

I do not post often on these boards anymore for a variety of reasons and what I am about to say is no reflection on the gentleman you mentioned. Chuck Vipperman's tireless efforts over many years are to be commended. Mr. Craighead has a tough task and has not been in the position long enough to impact things in a significant manner.

The fact is, no matter how young, and no matter how good the Dinwiddie program(it is good IMO), 55 - 3 is just a reflection of the abject failure that is the Danville City Public Schools, its school board and ultimately the entirety of the City administration. Even in GWs worst years historically and taking the best teams Dinwiddie has ever produced a shellacking like last night would be hard to imagine. I feel sorry for the kids, coaches and fans of what was once considered one of the best programs in the state that things have gotten to where they are now.

Good luck to Dinwiddie on the rest of its season!

I do not post often on these boards anymore for a variety of reasons and what I am about to say is no reflection on the gentleman you mentioned. Chuck Vipperman's tireless efforts over many years are to be commended. Mr. Craighead has a tough task and has not been in the position long enough to impact things in a significant manner.

The fact is, no matter how young, and no matter how good the Dinwiddie program(it is good IMO), 55 - 3 is just a reflection of the abject failure that is the Danville City Public Schools, its school board and ultimately the entirety of the City administration. Even in GWs worst years historically and taking the best teams Dinwiddie has ever produced a shellacking like last night would be hard to imagine. I feel sorry for the kids, coaches and fans of what was once considered one of the best programs in the state that things have gotten to where they are now.

I hear you, but the turn around has got to start somewhere. Maybe the rebuilt field and an influx of funds from the casino project will be the impetus for change.

And I make no excuses for anyone, but much of what has happened in your region was not the fault of any one government entity. My God, you have lost more jobs than the population on some small countries. That alone is enough to seriously deteriorate the fabric of the community.

I don’t know what the answer is, but just throwing money at it from unplanned directions is just a waste of time, and that money.

I believe there has to be a real appreciation of what the problems are, and then a realistic master plan that aggressively attacks the problem. But the key is leaders that want to serve for the right reasons, not to serve for what it will do for them.

Incidentally, I came away with the impression that Mancino wants to be part of the solution. But he needs a Principal and a school board that shares his commitment for change.

Dinwiddie is just a better team. They’re ranked #3 in Class 4 and is on a crash course to seeing Varina for the region championship. GW is incredibly young and they will get better. Kuddos to them for even scheduling Dinwiddie and trying to get Salem on the schedule for the next few seasons.

When you look at the Dinwiddie program, you see a community that cares. Their youth league games avg 600-700 fans in attendance and they built a 20$ million plus facility for their community to use. Danville ended optimist sports years and years ago and is more concerned with Alonzo “same sh*t, different disappointment” Jones, the idiots on city council and “school board” (piss poor board) taking pictures and acting like they’re working. Danville is over a half century behind in progress. @cutnjump I too feel sorry for the kids and coaching staff. Thank God for Nick Anderson and Mancino Craighead as they have a tall task but are doing a hell of a job.

Good luck to the Generals on the rest of their season. Would like to see them back in Lynchburg in December.

I agree Danville and Southside have experienced a lot of challenges economically that do contribute but, bad decisions and poor leadership are the accelerant that turns smoke or a small fire into a fully engaged five alarm blaze. I also think we can agree money is rarely any more effective than the people spending it and you can look to the collegiate ranks at schools like Texas, Texas A&M, Auburn and many more to realize money doesn't fix stupid even if it may mask it for short periods.

We couldn't ask for better hosts and a better atmosphere. I still say we had ya'll on the run with that late field goal---but we ran out of time.

We're going to be rooting like hell for Dinwiddie the rest of the year. Who knows? In a few years we might get to hook up in a state semifinal---preferrably in Danville. But I wouldn't mind another trip back up there at all.

I get your frustration---but it was just two short years ago that we got hammered in week one (Lord Botetourt). We ended that season 14 points shy of a regional championship.

We started this game with one returning starter on offense and one on defense. Opening games can be weird and they rarely reflect what the team will be like in week 10+.

I understand what you say but, our differences revolve around what we each perceive as real accomplishment and are further differentiated by the standards against which those accomplishments are measured. I am not really interested in plowing that ground again or further as I doubt either of our positions are likely to change.
