Adversity And NN Has Prepared Essex Well For Riverheads

Before they get to pound on #24, they will take some pounding from the hogs up front.

Essex does indeed have some hogs on the line - athletic hogs too!

You got to give the Northumberland boys credit - they are nowhere near the size of Essex but battled y'all hard in that Mud Bowl!

It was a slug fest indeed. Most outsiders only focused on Palmer (understandably) but the whole team was way improved which is why they went 11-2.

Check out all those awesome mud war pics in the Rapp Times!

Good luck EssexTrojan1 - hope y'all can do it.

From what I saw last year and the videos on Utube # 24 seems to be a nice well mannered young man . I hate that those boys are going to beat on him , and pound him like never before ! I just hope they don't hurt him .
They are expecting a massive crowd and parking may end up on Route 11 to the Interstate . Go Big Red !!!!!!!!!

that is nice of you xcross to show concern for a Neck boy, but 24 is pretty big and tough (co NND POY with Northumberland's Palmer). I think he will be just fine.

Wait till you see his friend, AJ Crabbe. (he's only 6'1 and nearly 400 pounds yet can move quite well). See if y'all can beat on him :)

@uvacavs1, with numerous seniors and others that have played in these type games, being behind won’t affect them. They lost to East Rock but never panicked and tried to do something outside the norm.

Some people keep calling them a machine but I just use the term methodical. Casto will not vary his game-plan but so much regardless of who we are playing. He is on record saying plenty of times that if you can stop it you will win, if you can’t then you better score every time you get it. It’s really that simple, the best Defense will set the tone and for all intents and purpose, wins the game.

Both have playmakers and both do what they do well as evidenced by making to this game. All our talking on these boards won’t change what occurs on the field.

As for size beating on our little team. I will say it in BOLD. WE ARE GENERALLY SMALLER THAN ANY TEAM WE PLAY AND IN MOST CASES OUT TALENTED. Very seldom is the Red team out executed or coached. It does happen and can happen Saturday.

By about 3:30 we will have the answer to who was better on Saturday. And really that’s all that matters. Past or future won’t matter for those 48 minutes. Safe travels to all those making the trip. Let’s pray for light showers after the game so we get the game in clean and everyone back home safe as well.

Did Crabbe play last year or the year before? Seems like they had a pretty big fella playing on the line for them but I can’t remember his name. I apologize

Agree with all you said - yes, the coaching is superb at Riverheads.

As for beating up on players with size, I was just responding to a Riverheads fan who repeatedly said Essex's Dameron was going to receive a beating from the Riverheads D.

and yes, Essex must play with 100% composure no matter what - I am sure Coach Jones will be all over that aspect of the mental game. It has cost Essex much in the past.

.

oh...I forgot to respond for to your 1st paragraph -

you said Riverheads never panicked when they got behind against East Rock. You said it did not affect them and they tried out some new playing styles.

That may be the case that they did not panic but they also did not come back either - they continued to lose and lost big....

that was my point....get a one dimensional team to play from behind and you force a team to play out of their comfort zone - panic or not, they just may lose.

In Northumberland's game v a very, very good West Point - the Indians had the lead at the end. WP needed 7 to 8 min to score and would have but only had like 3 min left.

The Indians won.

@uvacavs1 inhear what you are saying but I will use the Goochland game several years ago as an example of staying the course and being committed to what you do. The Red team won in the closing minutes due to not trying change the world but execute better. Can a team jump out and win, sure? Just dont expect a revamped offense to come out if we are down. Just not this coaches style. He has belief that if you can’t get 3-4 yds at a time you don’t deserve to win.

Crabbe played last year as a Jr. He wears #78. It was his big brother Scooter’s (R.I.P) jersey when he played and was apart of the ‘09 State championship team. The other big man you’re talking about is Teshaun Holmes...aka “Big Nasty. He was 6’3” 348lbs I believe. He wore #78 when Essex played Riverheads in 2016. Holmes is now a starting DT at Virginia State University.

Thanks for reminding me of that connection to Scooter. Everyone loved Scooter. RIP.
