AHS 7 - Galax 5, 4:00 in 1st

Re: AHS 9 - Galax 13, 4:00 in 1st

Galax is hot from the outside... three 3's in first quarter

Re: AHS 17 - Galax 22, half

Altavista having trouble getting shots and Galax is hot from outside...

Altavista is 0-5 from 3s and Galax is 5-13 from 3s. Also, Galax is out rebounding Altavista (the Colonels have only 1 offensive board).

I love a good upset, rooting for Galax to pull it off now. Still a lot of hoops to be played though!

Re: AHS 23 - Galax 30, 4:00 in 3rd

Galax is the harding playing team.

Re: AHS 17 - Galax 22, half

HR6, yes they are holding the ball. That is how Galax played Honaker on Friday night. They want to slow it down so that you won't blow them out. Honaker was doing to teams what Altavista has done to teams this year. And Galax slowed them to 40 points, when they were avg 77 a game.

Re: AHS 23 - Galax 30, start of 4th quarter

Altavista has to find some offense.

Re: AHS 17 - Galax 22, half

That's why we need a shot clock. Hopefully Altavista can mount a comeback.

Altavista WINS at buzzer

Altavista wins by two at buzzer by Meche Maubeck!

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

WOW! Thanks for the updates MrJ82! At the beginning of the playoffs, I wondered who or if anyone would be competitive with AltaVista and oddly enough, Galax wouldn't have been one of these teams I would have suspected (simply due to not seeing them play and only seeing their record on maxpreps going into the postseason), so kudos to them!

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

Good. Congrats to AltaVista.

After this game, VHSL needs to consider adopting shot clock. 35-33. I have seen individual players score more than 35 points in state tournament.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

I would give very little credence to a game of this type. I was told this game could be a ugly game.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

I think Altavista held the ball for over a minute to get the last shot. (If I heard it right on the radio) So no shot clock helped them get the win.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

HR6 - Altavista won the game because they held the ball nearly 3 minutes to set up for last shot. Using "holding the ball" as an excuse is poor. Galax competed and nearly pulled it off because they hit shots and took Altavista out of their game plan with tough d. The perimeter was closed all night. No doubt Altavista was the more talented team, but they couldn't run all night.

Give credit where it's due- and don't blame a shot clock or your team may not have won.

There does need to be a shot clock I agree, but to say the outcome of this game would have been much different is a disservice to the kids from Galax who played an exceptional ball game.

Great hs basketball game. Altavista is maybe the best team single a has seen in the past 20 years? Great teams find a way.

Hats off to Galax too for a heck of a run. Don't get back to town much, but always enjoy watching them be succesful.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

I think the best single A team in the last 20 years went undefeated in the 2009-2010 season and beat A-town in the Region and State finals that year. PLUS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Honaker may just very well win it all the finals tis year. 28-1 should not be taken lightly.

Galax did what they had to do...

yea, thanks MrJ82 for the updates. Sounds like Galax had a great game plan and did exactly what they had to do to keep the game close and have a chance to achieve a possible victory. Whether their strategy was boring or not, it obviously worked. Great job to them...

Obviously, Altavista is a great team. Going in it seemed like that maybe shooting at VCU (depth perception etc.) might impact the Colonels' shooting percentage but then again, I thought that they have been to the Siegel Center before, so they definitely have experience there. Still different feels and looks than the regional tourney. Those A-town boys can drop threes (and dunks) like nobody's business when they are comfortable it seems.

Anyway, Thornhill and one of the Johnson etc. boys get cold, have a great game plan, play some great D, make your shots count, different venue, overconfidence for AltaVista, (hard not to be in thier shoes) and you have your recipe,I suppose, for a shocker. Almost a major upset indeed but AltaVista was able to comeback and ESCAPE with the win...

It will be interesting to see how AltaVista responds in the title game. Will it be a close one or will they get hot again? Honaker will certainly be inspired...

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

Altavista had multiple possessions of over a minute as did Galax.

Generally the way games are played at this stage of year when both sides don't want to give up easy buckets.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

Naturally they held ball in a one possession game with a tie score.

But I am sorry, a 35-33 game isn't a great hs game. Now if it had been 95-93, yes.

Who will benefit the most from this experience I wonder?

Altavista narrowly escapes 35-33 over the major underdog Galax.

I wonder which team will gain the most from Altavista's near season ending experience? Will be it be a positive for Honaker? Or a positive for A-Town? or make no difference at all in the State Final? Seems like many ways this 1A title game could now play out. Any perspectives?

Final certainly more intriguing now (at least it seems that way to me). Best luck to both teams.

Re: Who will benefit the most from this experience I wonder?

Each game is a new day. altavista will put this game behind them and focus on Honker. I look for honaker to stall.

Re: Who will benefit the most from this experience I wonder?

I think Altavista. Altavista played ten great quarters last week after two bad quarter against Essex. Altavista won't go 0-for-the game from 3s, they won't get outrebounded by 9, the won't only get 35 shots off; so I look for them to come out hungry and angry against Honaker.

Re: Altavista WINS at buzzer

It was a 1:40 that Altavista held the ball after forcing the turnover. That being said, Galax limited the number of chances Altavista got and if you can hold the ball for the last shot in a tie game, do it. Altavista knew if they took a shot and Galax got the ball, they weren't giving it back before the buzzer. Galax did what they had to due to have a chance to win the game and Altavista was able to find a way. Good game.

Edit: Galax knew what they had to do to win. The same thing they did against Radford, slow down the game and limit the other team's chances and they did that. Radford is a better team than Galax but Galax was able to force them into a Galax game and won the game. Galax is a talented team but their offensive is limited and their inside game is not there, but they were able to use their strengths to get to states.

One other thing that will be in the Colonels favor is all of these athletes have been in these games before (the last two years in basketball, and the last two years in football), so IMO the expierence in these big games along with the talent of Altavista will outshine Honaker. I mean no disrespect at all to Honaker because I was really impressed with their athletes during football season when we made the long ride to their awesome football field this year. The fans at Honaker were AWESOME as well. Good Luck to both team, everyone have safe travels and GO COLONELS!!!!!!!

Many SWVA teams play in early season tourneys instead of home-home match ups. Honker is tourney tested well before the post season.
