Essex enters the game at 12-2 with notable wins over Haysi, Colonial Beach, Washington and Lee and King William. The Trojans average 39 ppg while allowing 14 with only one shutout. Essex's opponents combined record is 105-64.

Altavista comes to the game with a record of 14-0 with notable wins over Honaker, Parry McClure, Lunenburg and Galax. The Colonels average 43 ppg while only allowing 5 and have 7 shutouts on the season. Altavista's opponents combined record is 81-77.

Keys to the game for Essex: On offense Essex has to establish a run game and try to limit the time of possession for Altavista. Essex is much more balanced this year and has 3 backs that run the ball well and the line has good size and experience. If the Trojans can eat up the clock and score, which is obviously critical, they should be able to hang with the Colonels. Being able to run the ball should open up the field and allow for some big plays in the passing game as well.
On defense, the Trojans will need to limit the run game of Altavista and force them to pass. Essex has a pretty stout secondary led by Sterling Hammond. Essex will need to keep the ball in front of them and limit the big plays. I don't think you can stop Thornhill, but they will have to contain him if they want to win.

For Altavista: On offense, score early and often. Force Essex into passing the ball which they haven't done as much this year. Establish a run game early and stick with it if it's working.
On defense, don't allow Essex to run the ball and force them into 3rd and longs. Get an interception here and there and capitalize on them.

I'm looking for this to be a much better game than last year. Essex didn't have much of a running game last year to begin with, and with their #1 RB going out in the 1st quarter they were doomed. The weather didn't help either, which I think forced the Coaching staff into becoming more balanced this year. If Essex can run the ball they won't take any chances in passing the ball and this is what they'll have to do to win. Essex is very hungry and much more discipline this season. If Altavista can stick to what's working all season they should win, but if Essex can force a couple mistakes and get Altavista out of their comfort zone it could turn out int he Trojans favor. Good luck to both teams.

Essex will not just be able to line up and run the ball. Being one dimensional is not going to work against Vista. They will need to mix it up with some passing on first down. Also, last year was a GOOD game. I think it was 7-0 heading into the 4th.

I don't mean for them to be one demensional, just that they can keep putting theirselves in 3rd and longs. They'll have a much better chance of winning if they can get a ground game going. And if, IF they can run the ball then keep doing it. if they can't then obviously they'll have to pass too.

Somehow some way Essex gets it done this year. Being the favorites the last two years didn't work for em but this year they are the underdog. I think they get a couple timely turnovers and do just enough to pull it out. Essex 20 Altavista 17

Two weeks ago he came into the game and played some on defense but I don't think he started. Against Haysi he played on both sides of the ball but had limited carries..maybe 5 or 6.

I'm not a fan of milking the clock either. Haysi tried that with Essex. They had the ball almost the entire third quarter and came up empty.
Essex will need to find a way to slow down AltaVista. No one has been able to stop AltaVista, so Essex is going to need to score points and protect the football!

Scoring points will be key. If AltaVista scores, match them score for score, or at least keep it a "one possession" game. Never understood why the milk teams think they can win just keeping possession of ball. Only time a team should milk clock is 4th quarter, if they have the lead.

Nobody said anything about milking the clock. Sustaining long drives while SCORING will keep their defense on the field and hopefully wear them out.

Essex still has the ability to pass and will, but not being forced into obvious passing situations will be key.

Haysi never tried milking the clock. They were behind the whole game and passed a ton. How do you think Essex got 5 interceptions. Sustaining long drives is not the same as milking the clock. Nobody milks the clock when they are behind.

True, but most long drives result in "0" points. I saw one game where a team used up over 8 minutes on their first possession, got stopped on downs at 13 yard line and turned ball over to AltaVista.
AltaVista scored on 87 yard pass on first play.............for all intent and purposes.....ball game.

Would love to see this backed up with stats. Pretty sure it's false.

One games stats... one game is the proof?

Look at Riverheads, Wilson, Giles and a few others over the years who can take a 7 to 8 minute drive and score each time. TD's are scored more times than not, when a team has the ball for an 8 minute drive.

The key to keep an explosive high scoring offense off the field is to keep the ball away from them any way you can. Look a few years back at the 2A state game. How many times did the record breaking/setting offense of Essex have the ball? Not much, their defense stayed on the field all night. Long drives and special teams kept that O on the sidelines.

That's the statement that's false. It's absolutely false. MOST means more than otherwise. There's zero evidence to back this up. You just want to state your opinion as fact when it's not.

And what a wonderful drive it was! I really feel the game should have been called right after that drive lol :)

Though it happened many years ago, PM had two drives in the 1986 State Title vs. Manassas Park that consisted of 16 or more plays, both ending in TD's. One was a 99 yard drive. Talk about back breaking and demoralizing.

Hr 6 is correct it was Central Lunenburg They pick 4 or 5 first downs went for it on 4th down and didn't get it . First play TD .

I think Altavista needs to come out throwing the ball using their weapons like The Johnson twins and maulback we so they can loosen Essex defense up that way they are able to run the ball effective. If they just come out running ball we could be in for a long day . Do not be afraid to take chances go down the Field stretch the field. On defense it's not much really to say we have been shutting down teams all year. Only thing that concerns me is are run defense it scares me at times but we have been but not brake defense. Its one thing I like on are team that nobody else has it's that # 11 #1 when them lights come on you see them play at there best. I'll take them over anybody around . Go Colonels !!! Who's House ??!!

It true, against Central Lunenburg in the second round of playoffs. It was awesome!

Altivista has been bored up until this game. They will come out and show everyone why they are the favorite to win. Look for another shutout. It will be close for the 1st quarter and then look out.

Not many think Essex is capable, but if they don't have any turnovers they will get the win. Let's go Trojans!

Pass first, then run

teams should always establish the pass first and lossen up defense. Most people think you establish the run first. Get defense on their heels and it makes running ball a lot easier.

Don't know much about Essex but if it is close and comes down to the kicking game my money is on AltaVista, they have one of the best kickers if not the best kicker in the area. kick offs in the end zone, and has the leg and the accuracy to nail a 50 yarder.

The only ones who don't think Essex is capable, or I should say the only ones who are saying Essex isn't capable are people from Essex trying to create the ultimate underdog mentality. I think if you ask most people, yeah, they might pick Altavista to win, but most people believe Essex has the ability to win. If they didn't, then they wouldn't be in the state championship game once again.

Re: When behind

It was Central game. Ran at will basically, went for it on fourth and turnover on downs (if I'm not mistaken). Colonels scored very next play.

You're right fence crew. AHS is the favorite, yet the Colonels are a # 2 seed in the east...BEHIND who? Oh that's right, Essex. Maybe the Colonels are underdogs....

Yeah, they are seeded behind Essex, simply as a matter of their opponents underperforming (i.e. Gretna going 1-9). If you want to say Altavista is the underdog, be my guest. I have nothing riding on this game. I'm sure it'll be a great one and wish I could make it down.

Two more days to Showtime !! Sunny and 52 ill take that .It will be the first game in the playoffs above the frezzing mark about time lol.

I hear you Hokie. I definitely did not enjoy driving down to Salem in that nasty wintry weather last year. Yuck.
