Despite being an All-State performer the past two seasons at North Cross, sophomore Davis Call has been under the radar playing for North Cross (Roanoke). After strong performances at the NUC where he won MVP three times, Call will make the trip to Virginia Beach to compete against some of Hampton Roads best athletes.
"My Dad got a flyer advertising the camp a few weeks ago," Call said. "Knowing there will be college coaches there will give me a chance to show my skills against good competition."
In its 8th year, the 2015 Best of the 757 Football Camp and Showcase is the state of Virginia's longest running exposure camp and showcase and promises to be even bigger and better. Led by Directors, Steve Monninger, Head Coach at Norfolk Academy, and Alonzo Coley, Head Coach at Kecoughtan High School and a team of top high school coaches from Hampton Roads, the Best of the 757 is a unique competition, camp and showcase. This years camp will be held at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
Call had an outstanding second year at North Cross finishing with 117 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and 11 hurries while helping the Raiders make the VISAA playoffs. He said he is familiar with the Best of the 757 combine and he hopes to increase his exposure on the recruiting trail.
"I chose this camp over others because I heard the instructors really know what they are doing," Call said. "I hope to gain experience through the camp coaches and I hope to just to become a better player overall. "
Call (6-foot-2, 190) will workout as a tight end and on defense and as a defensive End/outside linebacker on defense. This is the 1st of many camps for Call who plans on attending camps at NC State, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest, James Madison, and Richmond. He is also attending a camp at Harvard in July.
"This offseason I need to continue gaining weight and staying in the weight room, as I am right now," he said. "My strength has increased a lot in the offseason, I haven't maxed out in about 2 months so I don't know specific numbers."
Call said he doesn't have any offers but he has received letters from North Carolina State, Yale, Harvard and Wingate University. He is hoping a strong showing at the Best of the 757 Combine will lead to more recognition.
