The Islanders are at Smithfield tonight and at Lafayette on Saturday...Poquoson better be on their game tonight, 'cause the Packers are improving and that's a tough place to play...can't afford to be looking ahead to Saturday. I'm hoping the Tabb upset will have them focused and ready...something tells me they will be, so I look for a good, solid win for the visiting team.

As much as I like Poquoson and pull for them, they have virtually no chance against the Rams...just being brutally honest here, folks. Even though both are legit title contenders in their respective classes, it's like comparing apples and oranges...not a fair fight to begin with, really.

Agreed. I like Poquoson's chances against Smithfield, but to have to play Lafayette less than a week later? No chance, no way, no how. It might be brutal.

I've seen Lafayette play this year. Their defense is a brick wall, and their offense, excellent. I've been a Bay Rivers guy for many years, and I believe this year's Lafayette team is the best that school has ever fielded. They would highly likely steamroll any 2A team in the state. Wouldn't be surprised in the least if they win it all this year in 4A.

If Poquoson plays like they did against Tabb, with all the miscues, they are going to have a brief playoff run. If they play up to their potential, like they did against New Kent and Warhill, they could, could, win it all.

Although Poquoson's poor execution went a long way towards losing the Tabb game on its own, it is worth noting the lopsided officiating. Poquoson was flagged 14 times and Tabb only 3 times. The newspaper had the wrong totals. After reviewing the game film, and not finding any justification in their judgement for several of the calls, the Poquoson coaches were upset enough to file an official complaint.

I agree w/your comments regarding Lafayette, which is why I said Poquoson was a mismatch. Their defense is as good, or better, than last year, which is hard to imagine...they also have a better offense, so they will be a tough opponent for anyone in class 4.

Geez, it almost sounds like the Tabb game was fixed...too bad a game like this will have marred what will hopefully be a special season for the Islanders.

Poster lucustookis has disappeared. Was he part of mike salem's purge?

I don't know if that is the case or not, but he would have certainly been more warranted than some of the others. He posted A LOT of bad things on here. When he was talking right, he had good insight though, so maybe he will be back at some point

Poquoson 55, Smithfield 0 Final

Damn, Poquoson's on a tear...3rd game in a row where it was essentially over at the end of the 1st quarter, although this one was by far the most impressive, given the opponent...I wasn't expecting that type of domination last night.

Here I was touting Lafayette and they lay an egg in the first half against Warhill...just goes to show you that anything can happen.

Getting nervous? lol

LOL! You know, I was asking myself if Saturday's game just got a lot more interesting? When I think about it, though, I just don't see Poquoson being able to score enough to seriously threaten the Rams...if Lafayette comes to play, I think their defense will overwhelm the Islanders, making it really tough to move the ball.

Agreed. I'd love to see a close game, though.

After Smithfield’s close lost to New Kent, and that without NK’s top RB Branch, perhaps the best in the Bay Rivers and on 3 days rest I wondered what may happen with Poquson. Well, Smithfield faded away. But it does make Saturdays game more interesting and gets our attention. No more look ahead like the first half of Warhill. The weather is looking better too. But this game is for our #1 seed in region A. We lose and that’s gone. With that at stake Lafayette will be focused at home.

As a little "sidebar" to this discussion, what in the world has gone wrong at Smithfield? When we played them at the first of the season, I saw a lot of possibilitys. They played tough, and never quit, even after the game was out of reach. From what I heard about them from last night, it certainly wasn't the same team.

I give Poquoson a punchers chance Saturday, but they will have to play a near perfect game, and Lafayette will have to make some uncharacteristic mistakes.

I was thinking the same thing. Key injuries maybe?

What was the game like last year between LHS and PHS? It sounds like both are better this year from reading on here
That game was at Poquoson, a tough place to play but Lafayette won 21-0. At least this year in Williamsburg.

I don’t know myself. But that last second defeat to NK and a short week probably had an effect. I saw Smithfield play Warhill 2 weeks ago and would almost guarantee with that Poquoson score they had some injuries against NK that lingered. The NK defense is physical. When Warhill lost to Poquoson 20-3 Warhill had several injuries. Everyone was out there on Tuesday for us, saw only 1 Warhill player not ready on the sideline.

Good point...ultimately, the story of the game was Lafayette's defense, once again...held Poquoson to 41 yards of total offense on 30 plays, and the Islanders are no slouch...virtually impossible to win not being able to move the ball.

It will be the brick wall defense that moves Lafayette along in the playoffs. The offense is better than last year and I think the 3 games in 8 days limited them in this game. If Poquoson improves their punting they will surprise some of those western Virginia teams big time. We could very well be playing Smithfield and Warhill again. At least Poquoson gets some new victims.

No doubt!

I'm surprised that Hicks struggled punting...he was a second team all state punter last season.
