Bird forecast?

After looking over the schedule for 9-15, I think I will wait until Sat. to head to Danville for that wedding I'll be attending, so I can go to this game. I'm sure Bleeding Navy will agree that this is a game our Dinwiddie group should take in.

It looks like an excellent chance for many of us VirginiaPreps friends to get together. Consider this your "Save The Date" notice. And of course we will have to find a place to gather and catch supper before the game. (DSH, be sure to bring your dad).

Guys, I'm really, really ready for some football. This is the first day we can say that "PRACTICE STARTS THIS MONTH"!!!!!

I really think there is more disarray at Bird than since about 1981. I don't mean that in a bad way, but having some real studs graduate and their coach resign late in the year put them in a position they haven't been in before. Tony Nicely is one of the best men I know, and I think he will do a good job at the helm, but it's just a big change for any program to lose a head coach, and when the program is as successful as Bird, there's not a lot of room to move up.

For the record, the last time Bird was worse than 8 wins was 1998. This is also the last time they failed to make the round of 16 in the playoffs.

I can't imagine Bird worse than 7-3, and I'm certain they're a playoff team. I also think you don't want them late in the season as the players get some experience under their belts. For the first time in quite some time however, I think that first round playoff game will be interesting for the Skyhawks.

For the record, I bet the Bird staff relishes not being picked as a state title contender right out of the gate for a change. I really wouldn't be surprised if they drew a straight flush this year and won double digit games, either.

They were big and nasty last year!
Will they be one dimensional again? Run, run, run, big as hell and no passing game? That's all good through the regular season. Up against a good defense..... not going to cut it.

Woa @springer76 shots fired buddy! I like it lol. But have we ever had a bird team that wasn't RUN HEAVY?

I recall.. I was watching the State Title game pitting Bird and Ocean Lakes, just the other day. That Bird team threw quite a few passes (effectively) that connected!! They did hang on to win (what was their first title) on a defensive stand near the goal line on 4th down, 14-10. Then the next 2 seasons if my memory holds.... they had that QB that they snagged from Hanover that could throw the ball too....Since he left, the passing game has been a weakness...Since then, they haven't been able to get past Hermitage and/or Highland Springs. Just saying...

Jalen Elliott is the quarterback for Bird you are referring to. Last year was the first year without him and as you said, the passing game was not a strength. Let's see what happens this year, hard to judge just from one year alone.

Elliot was there for 2 years right? Before 2 yrs at Hanover.

Bird was 4-5 for 51 yards in the air in the first quarter of that game. They were 2-9 for 1 yard the rest of the way. The long pass was 14 yards. They had one interception in the fourth quarter that set up Ocean Lakes for the dramatic fourth quarter drive. The week before that they hardly passed at all as their running back was going for 428 yards.

They did pass the ball well that year, but the state playoffs wasn't really the place it showed.

Now, the next year, when they won 35-28 against Briarwoods....

Dinwiddie just finished scrimmaging LC Bird and Henrico. Played two full quarters live game action. Starters played in both quarters. Bird runs it well and the quarterback has a live arm. Losing two good linebackers has set the defense back a bit. Dinwiddie ran the ball well on them. 10-7 Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie beat Henrico 10-6. Bird was leading Henrico 7-6 when I left.

By the way, Bird is big!

Dinwiddie shut down Bird running game in the first quarter. I don't remember Bird getting a first down. Second quarter looked better with a 6 minute TD drive. I agree the defense is not the same. They got gashed a few times up the middle and a lot of arm tackling. Dinwiddie showed a balance attack with the qb making some nice plays. Defense not that big but fast and aggressive. The kicker/punter looks good. Had about a 40 yarder field goal

Nice reply Birdfan. The Skyhawks arent hurting. They have a nice pass rush with sound db's. Their quarterback just missed a few throws. All three teams looked very good in my eyes. Hard hitting affair too. Richmond football is alive and well. Good luck to the Skyhawks and Warriors.

Especially impressive for the Warriors considering 2 of Henrico's impact player transfered out if the program all together and the tragic accident they had earlier this summer.

I agree. I really didn't expect the Warriors to show much. I was wrong. Like all teams at this point in the season, they have some work to do. But, they looked balanced and poised. Surprisingly well organized, which has not been their strong suit in recent years.

Too funny bc I remeber watching that OCL vs Bird game think my god Bird actual was having some success in the air. Generally Bird does land a pass or two but it always looks like a 1960's play from the "ice bowl". Extra Long play action with a 1-2 man route.. drag route trying to sneak 1 in LOL.

I do think that year was both the best Bird and OCL team I have seen.

@springer76 here is one for ya, which HSHS team do you think was better 2015 or 2016? I think I'll lean towards 2015. Those 2 recievers you had tht year were game-changers.

I too think the 2015 team was better.... Greg Dortch was and still is a beast!! K'Vaughn Wallace was and still is too.! Carter was and still is too!!
Note: Seeing some real good reports on Dortch at Wake Forest. Deemed a great play maker!! They are extremely impressed with him! They even said that Greg Dortch could be the difference maker in The Deacons offense. You will be seeing him in a number of play situations... Receiver, Running the ball out of the slot position, running sweeps out of the back field and returning kicks and punts.
I'm excited for Wake Forest... Can't wait to follow him..
Wallace is excelling on Clemson's defense too. Another Springer to watch in college is FELTON DAVIS. Wide receiver at Michigan State is supposed to be a difference maker this year too!!!

Jalen Elliott was the difference maker all season for Bird that year and the next. Paul Robertson went OFF in the playoffs with 1000 yards in the 4 games after a tremendous regular season, but it might not have happened if not for key plays from the QB throughout the year. Elliott excelled at rolling left or scrambling left and throwing accurately on the run which was impressive for a righty. He connected on a number of critical 3rd down plays in tight games that kept drives alive. No disrespect to Anthony Harris or other Bird QBs before or since, but Elliott put them over the top that first year.

Terrence Ervin went 16-32 for 267 and 2 TDs against Briarwoods in 2013. That was with a broken colarbone. School record for passing yardage in a game. I think that 2013 team was Bird's best. I felt like 2015 was just a tiny bit stronger of the two Highland Springs teams, but I only watched them on film and didn't see them in person.

I picked the Bird beating OL championship bc I feel like that OL team they beat was loaded and it was Class 6 championship. Ocean Lakes was the best team they beat in the finals. I am not sure they would win that game again. But you just need to win it once!
